Expecting Baby #3, When Should I Move My 2 Boys in the Same Room?

I have 2 boys aged 5 & 6 and am expecting my first girl in November! We only have 3 bedrooms, so it only seems right that my 2 boys share a room and the baby girl gets her own room. My question is, when do I move my younger son into his brothers room? (My oldest already has bunk beds). He will be starting Kindergarten next month, so I'm not sure if I should move him a couple weeks before he starts school so he can get used to sleeping with his brother, or wait until after the baby is born. (I figure the baby will sleep in my room for the first couple months). Going to Kindergarten is going to be a big change from preschool and I'm not sure if I should make him get rid of his room at that same time too! I'm a little nervous about this transition because they do so well being seperated at night, so any advice would be appreciated! Do you think if I waited to move him until after the baby is born, that he would blame the baby? I thought about re-doing the bedroom so it felt more like "their" room and not just his older brothers. What worked for you mommas??? Thanks is advance!

What can I do next?

I would say sooner the better :) I would also re-do their room like you said and make it about "them" versus about the baby getting her own room.

Yep, move them in! Get them excited about it! My 6 and 7 year old daughters have shared a room forever... they're very close (they still fight, but they're very close)... my son, 19 months, has his own room. Go for it! It's your only real option but it's a PERFECT option :)

I'd say before school starts too so the novelty of sharing a room wears off and they can get a good nights sleep for school. Also, you don't want the one brother who is loosing a room to be moved out as soon as baby comes. He may feel a little resentful if baby sister is "taking" his room away from him.

I say do it now, before school starts so they can adjust!

Our situation was very similar only my kids were younger at the time of the switch. We also already had bunk beds so we just updated the bedding, moved in lil' bro's things, tagged his name on the wall (big sticky felt letters my mom makes) and it was great. My boys LOVE being together...I feel silly now for worrying like I did!

When it came to decorating baby sis' room we had them help with everything, we let them paint ( a little :) and let them stick the name letters and pick out a few things.

My boys will be 8 & 6 in October and baby girl will be 4 in February and I was pleasantly surprised how much they love their lil' sister!

Congrats on the 3rd!! Having 3 was the best decision for me!

I agree. I'd do it now so that they have time to adjust before school starts.

As soon as possible! Otherwise, a newborn baby won't be the only one keeping you up at night. LOL!

Whenever is good for you and your hubby. Your sons will adjust regardless of what you decide. We changed rooms around the weekend before my C-Section...LOL Congratulations!! Good luck

Before school starts.
Hopefully, both boys will get enough sleep and get along in a shared room.

Me, I HATED sharing a room with my sibling.
It was oil and water.
NOT ever, peaceful.

Definitely now...the sooner the better! Allow as much time for adjustment as possible before their world's change...for the better of course!

Do it now because, yes, in his mind he may "blame" his new sister for having to move. Doing it now he won't see a connection, to give up his room, transition to Kindergarten, and have a new sister all at once would be a lot of change for him to deal with.

Make sure you do add some things on the wall and in the room to make it his as well, rather than just moving into big bro's. I'd also get him his own bedding, something he picks out, and hype this up as much as possible, "Wow, you boys are going to have so much fun now that you're in the same room."

Congrats!

Trust me- do it now :) no matter their age it takes some time to get used to sleeping in the same room and you don't want your kids exhausted for school. We moved our kids about 2 mos before baby was born but started the process 3 mos before with weekend sleepovers in the same room. My kids were just about 4 and 2.5 yo though. Baby is now 2 mos old and still in our room in the basinette but now when we do transition him to the crib in the other kid's old room, he won't feel as much like he is being displaced. Most nights my kids sleep great together :) good luck and congrats on your little girl :)
