Moms - I am 5 weeks along and have also been a avid runner. Before my pregnancy I ran about 12-15 miles per week. Now, I can barely run a block! My knees are so achy and my tummy doesn't like it either! I am so frustrated and need a good workout to keep me in shape and help relieve stress.

Running is my life and my stress reliever and without it I am lost. What can I do instead that will actually give me a good workout and is safe to do during pregnancy? Just walking doesn't do it for me, as it feels like I am not really even working out.

Thanks moms!!

What can I do next?

If you have any access to a gym, you could try an elliptical. Or maybe speed walking would give you what you need for this first trimester. You may find you are able to do more as your pregnancy progresses. You could also workout a bit using exercise bands to give you some resistance.

Check out www.strollerstrides.com. The have a fit for baby program for expecting mothers, and then once you are 6 weeks postpartum you can go back to be in stroller strides! You can walk/jog/run and they do resistance band training to keep you tones and strong!

Good luck!

Ok, so I only like to run and/or spin. They seem to be the only things that I can stick with. I attended a spin/cycle class through my pregnancy up until 35ish weeks. It was wonderful and I stayed in great shape. I highly recommend it. :)

Your body protects that growing baby so much during pregnancy.

I majored in Biology in college, and I recall one professor saying that you could literally play a game of basketball 9 months pregnant, and the baby would be well-protected in the womb.

I know of one Nurse Practitioner that actually ran 3 miles/day until she delivered. I'm sure that was a sight to see.

The first trimester is the hardest and most taxing on your body. Do what you can, speak with your OB/GYN to find out what they recommend, and in a few weeks you should have your energy back again.

Good luck!

Congrats on your new pregnancy.

I was not an avid runner but did it when I couldn't make it to the gym. I could not run when I was pregnant either, mine was more of a bladder issue even early on. I instead did cycling (stationary), strength training, and yoga. Since you are so early you may be able to start something new. I would discuss it with your doctor.

I have always heard that you can continue to do what you did prepregnancy in your pregnancy. I took pregnancy yoga last time and there was a lady that ran to every class. In your first trimester you may just not have the energy for anything right now. But it will come back. Sorry, I don't have any suggestions for specific exercises.

Congrats on your pregnancy.....
I've worked out since I was young (not a runner but a workout person). When I was pregnant I kickboxed until 8 months along (NOT contact obviously)... Or I did the stairs at manual (depending on my mood would depend on how fast I went)... Or on the treadmill I would constantly go up and down with the elevation (up to 15.0 and down to 5.0) (keeps your heart rate going).. Good luck!
