Exercise Ball as an Office Chair

I work out regularly, but my new job has exercise balls all over as an alternative to the standard office chair. Has anyone ever noticed any benefits from switching off between the traditional office chair and an exercise ball (or just using the ball exclusively)? I've always had tension in my neck and shoulders, and hey - if it does any real ab work, I won't complain :).

What can I do next?

I used mine in college as my desk chair and loved it. I know I moved around more when on it too. Can't say for sure about abs, since I did gymnastics and we did a lot of abs, lol. My parents were up visiting our house not too long ago and I had my mom sit on mine for awhile and she seem to be able to feel it when she got up. I use mine now to watch tv sometimes too.

I would think it could help, especially if you move a little here and there, since your muscles will automatically contract to keep your balance. Sounds like fun being able to use one in the office place as a desk chair!

It works. I did it for a while but haven't at our new place, need to do it again.

Just like using them when you're in labor, the exercise balls put your pelvis in proper alignment and help strengthen your core muscles (which, over time, we can get really lax with - just look at how an infant sits vs. how we do).

A lot of companies see the benefit to using exercise balls because they tend to prevent a lot of strain on backs, shoulders, hips. However, my present company is very conservative, and it would not be appropriate despite me working in an area not seen by the general public.

I love my exercise ball chair - it is my only office chair. I think the overall "exercise" benefits are over-rated, but it does help significantly with back and neck strain. I will caution though that you can still slump in this chair, so it does require some getting acclimation to ensure that you are using it properly.

I've never done this, but am interested in trying it. The only question I have is about height. (I am sort of short girth-wise) Are they tall enough for a standard desk? It does seem like a good way to make sure you aren't slouching

The stability ball helps with your core because you are using those muscles for stabilizing. It can also be relaxing to sit on. We have one that floats around our office and we sometimes rotate around with someone using it instead of their chair. We used to keep it in our closet and I used it for a chair when I was pumping breastmilk at work. If you aren't sure, see if you can keep your chair handy. You might not like it full-time, especially if you wear heels a lot at work. They do make different sizes but they usually work based on height if you have a ball choice.

I don't know about "workouts" per se... but what they DO do, is improve your posture. Can't slouch/slump/hunch your shoulders while sitting on one of those! Which might solve some of your neck strain issues....
