Has anyone ever heard of running causing problems like blocked milk ducts for breastfeeding women? I ask because I have recently started running (I use the term running losely because at this point I'm walking 75% of the time and actually running the other 25%). Since I started running I have had a painful blocked milk duct twice. The first time was so painful I ceased all exercising for a week until it felt better. I started back running a once again I have a bloced milk duct. It doesn't seem as bad this time so I expect to continue running this week. My sports bra has support but isn't too tight. Anyone have experice with running while nursing?

What can I do next?

Any constriction can cause the ducts to block. Sports bras and underwires are the biggest culprits. What are you doing to unblock it?
My advice:
Take off the bra and go braless as much as you can.
Point the baby's chin toward the blockage when you nurse.
Lay the baby on the floor and crouch over him/her with your breast hanging down to nurse the baby, to allow gravity to help pull the blockage out.
Also, warm compresses.
Drink more fluids.

Good luck.

Massage and nurse as often as possible.

It is sometimes easier to pump that breast while massaging the area with your other hand versus trying to work it out while actually nursing.

My sports bra was snug (not tight) and I got one. I'm not a runner, but I wore them all the time to exercise/walk/hike/go to the gym... I got bigger sports bras.

Getting the clog out: warm/hot water and massage it (in the shower). a warm compress won't do it alone, use the moisture to loosen the nipple/opening and massage that sucker out. Ice when you need pain relief.

best of luck, ouch!

Definitely could be compression. I never had a blocked duct, but I did start working out again at 6 weeks after delivery and always nursed really well or pumped before exercising, so maybe that helped.

I agree with the other moms here -- it's much more likely the bra you're wearing while exercising than the exercise itself. Find a looser bra to wear while you exercise, and if necessary, switch to something lower impact for the time being.

be very careful with those blocked ducts -- they can easily turn into mastitis. Having had that last year, I can tell you it is absolutely miserable and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
