Excessive Sleeping-possible Immunization Side Effect?

My three month old daughter has so far been a good sleeper, for which we count ourselves extremely lucky. But on Wednesday, the 5th she received her polio and DTP vaccines and the past few days has been sleeping so much that I'm actually concerned. She's not running a fever and when she's awake is active and cheerful, but she gets tired and cranky after an hour and then goes down for another nap. Yesterday one of her naps lasted four hours! I know I may sound crazy as most people with infants worry about getting them to sleep in the first place, but I'm worried that this could be a side effect of the vaccine. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? Am I completely neurotic or should I just be grateful to have such a good sleeper?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the advice everyone. I think it very well may be a growth spurt, plus I spoke to my ped and he told me the vaccine could make her more tired. I will now cease my worrying and enjoy her long naps. I may actually try to clean my house while I'm at it!(Insert snickering here.)

My daughter slept a lot after her 6 mos vax. I cant remember how long it lasted, but it did go away. Since she's active and happy when she's rested, I wouldnt worry too much unless it goes on for more than a week or so.

Hello--I dont think you have anything to worry about. It could be from the shots or it could just be she is growing and needs her sleep. My son (up until 4 months) slept so much, sometimes he would sleep all day and just wake up for a quick bottle and sleep for another 4 hours. Then there were those days he wouldnt take a nap longer than 15 mins. I would take advantage of the great naps now because it wont last much longer. Happy Holidays---

My baby slept a lot after his first set of shots too. I think it should be normal. But if your baby shows other side effects, I would call the doctor.

I don't know about vaccines since we are waiting, but 3 months is a growth spurt time and usually during those times, my daughter would eat a ton and sleep a ton. After a few days to a week max, she was back to normal and happy. She just needed the food and rest to grow. That may be your issue.

Take care,
H.

My daughter slept 18 hours/day after her 9 month and 12 month visit...and we did an "altered" schedule so she didn't get as many at once. I too was concerned. She went back to normal after 2 weeks or so.

After the 2 and 4 month visits, our baby had long naps for about 2 days then went back to normal. Subsequent vaccinations did not result in longer naps. I'd say it sounds pretty normal.

I would say that it is normal. My kids are always more sleepy after doc visits that involve vaccinations. Also, she may be hitting a growth spurt (another time when kiddies sleep more than usual). :)

My daughter slept like that after her vaccines as well as whenever she was going to have a growth spurt. Quite often, they coincided, so it would go on for a week or so. If she stays happy, is eating, and no fevers, then you should be okay.

Totally normal. Take it while you can get it! If you are concerned though or it goes on longer than you are comfortable with call your Ped.

My kids were both like that with their first set of shots. Also, another possibility is that she is growing. They sleep more when they are growing, so... Either way, I wouldn't be too concerned unless it goes on for a long time, but even then, you are very luck to have a good sleeper. If you are really worried, call the dr., but if she is eating/not running a temp, she's probably ok!
