E.M.
My husband was sent to a lab due to work schedule conflicts (he is military and at training at the time so he was NEVER home... In fact he was in another state) but mine was done in house.
I'm in the process of applying for a term life insurance policy and I knew that I would have to have an exam (bloodwork, urine, etc.) but I thought I'd be able to go to my doctor for that. Well, I found out today that a phlebotomist (person who draws blood) will come to our house to do the blood draws, urine collection, height & weight, etc. Is that normal??? Sounds bizarre to me, but she said all insurance companies do it that way. Just curious if any of you have encountered this.
Thanks for all your responses. Everything should come out fine.......I'm not overweight and don't smoke. Glad to know that this is standard practice, I feel much better now.

Yes, it's normal. My husband and I have a couple different policies and they were both done that way.
Totally normal. It's kinda like a drug test - they need to be able to confirm that the blood came from you.
I actually used to do this job :) and yes this is completely normal.
And it's been going on for a long time. We had this done when I was pregnant with my daughter, and she's 16 1/2 years old :)
It'll be fine. Be sure to drink plenty of water the day before and the day of, it'll help with the urine sample and with the blood draw.
Several times :) Yes, it's normal.
Yep, normal. We've had that done every time we've applied for life insurance.
we did that for our insurance.
I haven't known them to come to the home, but usually you at least have to go to an insurance company-approved medical place -not your own doctor. They want to be sure they know the real deal and that your doctor isn't your cousin or best friend who is saying everything is okay when it's not.
It is normal. They will even come to your office if that's more convenient!
I thought it was odd as well.
I had the guy come to my house as well.
When he went to draw the blood it squirted out all over the place. As it was happening he said very matter of factly ''Oh your a squirter''. I could not believe what was happening.
I asked my insurance company if they research the lab before they send them out to their customer's house's or just let any old body who says they know what they are doing, do it.
That's the way they did it for my sister, BIL, DH and I (we used 2 different companies). They also ask for access to your medical records. They also run tests to test for things like nicotine in your system so don't lie about smoking. The people that came to our house (2 different policies, 2 different times) were very professional.
Hi TO, I'm an insurance agent. They do that because your policy premium is based in part on your health and *how* you answered those health questions. For example, if you are overweight, your premium is higher. Its one of the things that people *fudge* the numbers on. So they do send their own people to do these tests so they can confirm that the policy they issue is indeed correct. =) Good luck.
Normal.

Normal.
T O:
TOTALLY normal. They have their own person do the draw and such. This way - they feel there can't be any confusion or a doctor fudging the records so that you can save some money....
It's all good!!
yep - totally normal : )
We had it done in our home as well. It is totally normal, several people at work here have had it done that way as well. It just depends on the company.
Normal.
They want an unbiased assessment.
Yes, totally normal! When I was married to my x, we applied to several life insurance companies (we paid high premiums due to his hobby and always shopped around for cheaper ins) thru out the 12 years we were married. So that meant a phlebotomist out each time we signed with a new one. This was 11 years ago too.
Totally normal. And it's way more convenient when they come to you vs you having to go get it done at a doc's office. Make sure you fast overnight and don't eat a heavy, fatty meal the night before.
That's how we did it.
That's how any reputable insurance company who is issuing any large amount ($100,000 or more) of life insurance does it.
Good luck,

Yep, that is the way it is done. I WILL caution you though. They will interview you and ask you all types of questions regarding your health. Be truthful of course, but be VERY careful how you phrase things. My husband did this and had visited a dermatologist many years ago to have a basal cell removed from his arm. Somehow, it got listed as a malignant melanoma and they required the medical records. The doctor he had gone to had since left the practice and the office could not find the records. After several months of back and forth, the insurance company refused to write the policy. I do not know exactly what my DH said during the interview, but we were not able to get a policy because of it.
Yep. Totally normal (well, strange, but usual). I've had it done with two different companies now.
Now biggie. They're in and out in 20 minutes. Just make sure you don't drink a bunch of coffee or pee before they come. :)
Yes, it's normal. Make sure you drink plenty of water, starting the night before, to hydrate you. Also, fast from midnight the night before to help your cholesterol numbers, triglycerides, and your blood sugar.
Hydrating well will make it so it's easier to get a vein and she won't have to stick you so many times. That's what the blood tech explained to me after the 4th stick! I always drink plenty of water now to get ready for her!
Dawn
Totally normal. It's what they do for a living, so they are really good at it, and quick.
I could either go to a clinic that my insurance company used or have them come to my office.
I think this is pretty standard in the industry.
:)
Yep - 100% normal. The company pays for the exam. Typically your health insurance plan specifically excludes coverage for exams for insurance purposes. Make sure you have any instructions ahead of time for things like fluid intake, fasting, etc. so you are prepared for the exam.
Good luck.
D.
yep, but we had an RN come to our house
I had that when I got life insurance too. I think it's very normal. Not sure why ... maybe to try to make it easier to get life insurance - more convienent.
