Ever Used a "Sleep Trainer"?

Our ten month old has never been a good sleeper and we are getting desperate - a neighbor recently mentioned "sleep trainers" who work with families, but we had never heard of any such thing in the Chicagoland area. Does anyone have any experience or information about these individuals? Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

Hi, M..
My first child was a very poor sleeper for the first few years of his life. In time, it turned out there were some reasons for this, plus, some babies just aren't good sleepers. I would absolutely steer clear of a "sleep trainer." Some of these methods are just cruel. I recommend co-sleeping, to relax your baby. Also, two great books are The Happiest Baby on the Block by Dr. Harvey Karp and Nighttime Parenting by Dr. William Sears. Sears and his wife have written many books. Perhaps you have some of them. Good luck. It really doesn't last forever.

Hi M.,

My name is M., I have a 2 year old Son Dylan and pregant of baby#2.

Dylan has been a bad sleeper since the day he was born. For the first 3 months he hardly slept, only in the babybjorn on my chest. After 3 mo we were all so tired that we needed to take some action.

My pediatrician is Dr Weissbluth from the Northwestern Childrens Practice in Chicago. He is specialist in this field.
We had to make a chart of when the baby was sleeping, crying and awake, he studied it and gave us advice which we followed. after that sleeping became a lot better. I don't stay that we never struggled after that but it improved so much that it made us all very happy.

He wrote a book called 'healthy sleephabits happy child'. you can buy it at amazone or at his practice. I'll even lent you my own copy if you want to.

I could go into detail a lot more about how we accomplished a regular schedule for Dylan if you would like to know more.
Let me know what your 10 month old is doing and I can look it up in the book so you can at least try something yourself.

Kind regards,
M.

hi M.,

The Sleeping Child is a resource for "sleep trainers" http://www.thesleepingchild.com/

Hans and Jennifer both came to a meeting I facilitate and had extensive knowledge on sleep. They seem to consult w/ families and try to help work out a plan based on your style.

Good luck-a good night sleep can open up the world!

Dr. Marc Weissbluth wrote Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child. His pediatrician's practice is located on Lake Shore Drive, just around the corner from Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He was described to me as "the Sleep Doctor" before I chose a doctor from his practice as my son's pediatrician. Although my son is still too young for me to have tried any of his techniques to provide you with a first-hand testimonial, I have spoken with numerous people who have had nothing but success by following his methods. I would suggest getting his book (if you have time to skim it to get the gist of it), or calling the Northwestern Children's Practice and scheduling an appointment with Dr. Weissbluth so he can work with you personally to get your child to sleep better.

Hi M., I never used a sleep trainer, but my first son didn't start sleeping through the night until he was 10 months old. I was starting to panic as well and read Dr. Marc Weissbluth's book titled "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child." It really helped a lot. I know of several other mothers who go to him as their pediatrician and they all rave about how well their children sleep based on his practices. Good luck!
