I have been considering getting my highlights done at a ritzy NYC salon on a training night because I could never afford to pay $400 for highlights! Have any of you ever done that in NYC? How did it go and could you recommend a salon?

What can I do next?

had a haircut at Clairol on training night, and ended up looking like a poodle. don't recommend it. find a local hairdresser. i live on long island, and have a great gal in bellmore. i recommend using a place called krazy kuts on merrick road in bellmore.

When I was a teenager (many moons ago), a group of friends and I went to a salon in the Empire State Building that offered to do our hair and possibly use us in a styling magazine. It was also a training day. There was five of us. Three came out beautiful, 2 came out looking like boys ( they cut our hair extremely short). At the time I was pissed. I wanted the good hair cut and photo op. When we think back now though, it was a blast. We all got complete makeovers for free and hey 3 out of 5 isn't bad odds.
My advise is do it. Just tell them exactly what you want and "don't want". Have fun and good luck!!!

yes--usually, and i would assume certainly at a fancy salon, they are supervised closely. just be prepared for it to take a looooong time, but certainly worth it if you wouldn't otherwise afford it!

Hi S.,

My friend works at Bumble & Bumble and they have training nights on Mondays. They always need "models" and advertise it in various papers/word of mouth. You can also sign up on their website. The trainees are supervised by a master beautician and if there are any difficulties he/she would intervene. Its a great way to save money and get the latest trends!

Good luck!

hey! i went to the aveda institute in soho and they have the best deal ($18 for a haircut..can't remember how much for highlights). the instructors are like hawks and help guide each student during the process. they also do what you want them to do unlike other schools where you have to do whatever they need for that day. so give that a try, it's worth it.
