D.T.
In most countries around the world, it's common to swaddle for the 1st year. We swaddled our son until he was about 7 or 8 months old. Our daughter was swaddled until 5 months. Use a bigger blanket and you can still swaddle her tightly if that's what she wants. Is she rolling over yet? Most babies prefer to sleep on their tummy's... once they can roll over on their own, or at least lift their head easily on their tummy, you can see if she prefers sleeping on her tummy. Everything I've heard about the 'back-to-sleep' thing is for young infants. Once they roll over on their own and have good head control it's ok for them to sleep on their tummys. If she's half-swaddled, she may not be able to manuveur onto her tummy. Babies on tummys don't have the 'arm-flailing' thing waking them up like back-sleepers. She'll eventually 'get it' and fall back to sleep without being swaddled. Starting at around 5 months for our son we just loosely swaddled him. It took a few nights but he started going back to sleep once unswaddled. We continued to loosely swaddle him for several months. Give her a few minutes (I know... 5 minutes feel like an eternity at night) to try to figure it out for herself. If she's still restless after 5 minutes, go to her and fix it. She's only 5 months old... that's a blink of an eye in her life... Regardless of what the books all say, you can rock her to sleep and help her gently without ruining her sleep habits for life.
