Hi ladies,

I am due to give birth in a few weeks and this is my 4th baby, so I am all done in that department. I have been doing a little research into permanent birth control, and Essure was recommended. I think this sounds dreamy, compared to a tubal ligation, and I would really like to have this done. Have any of you had this done? I would love to hear first hand what it's like-everything from how the procedure is done, to the 3 month follow up test to confirm that it has been successful. I really want to do something permanent, as I can;t stand the thought of being on hormones the rest of my life, and an IUD is not something I am willing to try. This last pregnancy has been VERY hard on my body, and my psyche, and I just cannot go through another one ever again, so I am 100% sure that permanent BC is the right option for me. Thanks moms!

Having some foreign material implanted in your body just sounds like trouble. Why doesn't your husband get a vasectomy? It's a simple procedure and he'll be uncomfortable for a day or two, but able to go back to work, etc., the day after. Just curious...

Just wanted to add that my husband had a vasectomy, which is how I know that it's a nothing procedure - also know at least four men in our group of friends who've had a vasectomy in the past six months. All are fine. I did the pregnancy (had a twin pregnancy and still recovering from it!!) thing so my husband did the birth control thing. Was the least he could do, he felt.

My bff had this done in April and is extremely happy with it so far. She got up from having it and went and had Sushi with her husband to celebrate. They drove back to our town and she took it easy the rest of that day and was back to life in general the next. She has had a tiny bit of cramping feeling but is not uncomfortable. She researched this idea for a while and saved up money to get it done since it wasn't covered by insurance. She did it and is very happy about it. She used the Nuva ring before and was very happy at how low the dose is and convenience it provided.

I have not experienced this, but I wanted to share what I do know. If/when my husband and I go permanent, I will probably be leaning toward this procedure. A co-worker of mine had it done sometime in the last year, and she loved it. She said the in-office procedure was like a normal pap when the doctor inserted the "spring" or whatever into her tubes. She was up off the table and ready for work. She actually said, "Can I do that again??? Why didn't I do this sooner?" To my knowledge (because I asked her) she had no side-effects, no problems, etc. I am not sure about the follow-up, but I imaging they are checking for scar tissue growth, since the whole point is that your tubes will be blocked.

The only consideration I would have is that it is a newer procedure. The prevention statistics are very high (higher than a tubal ligation I believe) but there is not enough long-term research to show if, like a tubal ligation, the failure rate rises over time. Also unlike a tubal, it is very permanent--they cannot remove the scar tissue and make your tubes usable again. Dig around and find out what the long-term follow-up is to make sure there are no changes, etc. I'm not sure how long you would have to wait after giving birth to have the procedure done, either. Good luck! I do not want to be on hormones either when I'm finished having kids. They haven't been agreeing with me lately. :(

I looked into this as well and after coming accross numerous reports of women who loved it and then had serious problems I decided it is not an option for me. They insert a spring type thing in and it is supposed to create scar tissue that blocks your tubes. Well the thought sounds easy, but they never take the tubes out. I read tons of reports of women having the springs migrate out of their tubes and piercing other organs and causing lots of pain. I think we will just go with a vasectomy, they are the easiest route in permanent BC. If you want to do thorough research you need to look for issues other women had, not just the good experiences. I am not comfortable with a foreign object remaining in my body!

I've been researching this as well (same boat as you), the below poster echos what I've read in terms of feedback.
I do know someone that had it done, and has had a lot of cramping problems. She's a month into it now. But they have not figured out yet what that's about.
As for the follow up, I believe they use a dye to inject into your tubes and then an ultrasound to be sure that nothing is passing through the scar tissue.
I know that's not very helpful, but just wanted to add a bit more detail.
