My 17mth son has recently discovered how to get out of his crib and play yard. Any advice on how I should handle this? I don't know if it might be time to switch him over to a toddler bed or what. Is he to young for that? Any input would be much appreciated! Thanks.

What can I do next?

It's definately not too early, and would be a safer choice to move him out of his crib. You don't have to go to a toddler bed--they grow out of them so quickly that it's a waste of money in my opinion.....I moved my daughter to a twin size bed when she was 18 mo old (with side bed rails of course!)

I don't think he's too young to transition to a bed now. We transitioned my daughter before she was 2. Not sure I would have bought a toddler bed vs. a regular sized bed, but since our cribs converted to toddler beds that's what we used. Very low to the ground and worked out great.

My doctor told us not to get them out of the crib until they climbed out at least 100 times. I was shocked and was so worried my little girl (then 17 months old) would hurt herself. After a few weeks of us putting her back in and telling her no danger she stopped. We didn't have to move her to a toddler bed until she was 28 months old. U thought about buying the tent that goes around the top of the crib, but she stopped before I purchased one.

It sounds like it time to switch him over to a regular bed. Once my boys were climbing out I switched them. We made a big production out of it, how big you've grown. Look what a big guy gets to sleep in. He should adjust just fine.

Crib Tent! They are awesome. It basically fits under the mattress and tents up over the top of the crib. They can't escape. You can get them at Babies R Us or Amazon.com I used one for two years and only just switched my son to a toddler bed at 2 1/2.

I would get him out of the crib now...it is very dangerous if he falls. I would skip the whole toddler bed and go straight to a regular bed with rails - One Step Ahead has the extra long rails and they work great. My son went straight from his crib to a full size bed and he slept like a champ once he got into a big boy bed. Toddler beds are uncomfortable and a huge waste of money in my mind. I am awaiting the delivery of my 17 month old's big boy bed and he will go into a full size bed also. He is likewise a climber and has tried to climb out unsuccessfully thus far, but is getting more and more creative daily! Thank goodness for video monitors! Good luck!

Hi L.,
I remember as a kid my brother was about this age when he learned to climb out of his crib and get into things in the middle of the night. Being 4 years older, I was blamed for it as my parents did not know I was telling the truth when I said it wasn't me. When my parents learned it was my brother they switched him to a toddler bed. When each of my children turned 1 I switched them over to beds. I did not want them to learn to climb out of the crib and possibly hurt themselves. (The less trips to the emergency room the better :-) ) I think it sounds that your son is ready for a toddler bed. I hope this helps and good luck!
