Hi Mamas! My soon to be 8 y/o boy is asking for a Kindle for his birthday. He uses his grandma's every chance he gets. I have a great coupon for the Kobo AND have recently heard more about the Nook. Any feedback about pros and cons of the different brands would be much appreciated. Durability is a concern too :). Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! My research and feedback forums have lead me to the Nook. Though Kindle readers are most passionate about their product a couple issues put the Nook slightly above the Kindle for our purposes. The lack of automatic shut off with "ghostwriting" on the screen of the Kindle was a concern as I think our boy could possibly fall asleep with it on. Barnes and Noble has a free user class that I think would benefit my son....he likes "lessons" :) The sales people at Barnes and Noble ALL knew how the product worked in and out. Additionally a huge point was our local library's ebooks are compatible with the Nook. Though I had a great coupon, and could have gotten the Kobo for $100, it just was too basic. Grandparents are purchasing a superdurable cover, so this should be a fun birthday for us all! Now if I can just keep the Ereader as exciting as the DS and such!

I think getting an ereader is a great idea. My ten year old boy got one when he was 9 and he is very happy with it. My son says that the reading quality of the Sony ereader was better but he liked the 'games' that were on the Nook. Either way, what a great gift.

I have a sony reader and I loved it (the pocket reader is only $189 at walmart) but recently it has frozen on the begining screen and I cant restart I dont know if it was just mine or not, because it got really good reviews and is cheaper than the other ereaders. editing to add that apparently it wasnt frozen. I emailed the help center and they helped me fix it. also it does not take any battery to turn it on or off or it will not use any battery if it stays on (this is why I thought it was frozen) it only takes battery to turn the page.

I would recommend the Nook or Sony. I work at a library and the Kindle is not compatible with our ebooks. I'd check with your local library. I have heard good things about the Kobo from some of my coworkers as well.

I have a kindle and LOVE it!! I got it last year for Christmas and have downloaded and read over 40 books since then. I love to read and it has saved me lots of monewy at the bookstores since the books are so much cheaper (and yes even free). I am rough with it and have dropped it more times then I would like to admit (or fallen aslepp and it has fallen out of the bed) and it has held up really well. I did buy a cover for it to protect the screen since I carry it my purse (which also takes a beating). I would reccomend to anyone. Oh and the battery life last very long as long as you turn the 3G wireless off.
