Alright, Mamas! I just got the call we all dread from my OB/GYN...."Your pap came back with a reading of "Abnormal Cell Abnormality" and we need you to come in for a colposcopy/biopsy." ?!?!?! Yikes! I had a cervical coning procedure done around 3 years ago to remove some dysplasia. At the time, my doc said once that procedure is done, you're are usually good to go. So here we are. If you have experienced this before, please let me know what you learned, how it went, etc etc. And above all, prayers would be greatly appreciated!!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much to those of you who reached out to offer comfort, support and your own personal experiences. I went for the colposcopy this morning and the first thing both my nurse and doctor each said was "I promise you don't have cancer." LOL I guess they know me well and knew I was concerned, having already been in for a colposcopy that resulted in a coning procedure a few years back. Once he looked around, he did find one very small area of mild dysplasia. He took a biopsy but said he feels the path report will come back good. Once it does, I will meet with him again to go over it in about three weeks, then he will most likely just monitor it. Again, thanks so much, Mamas!!! I feel much more at ease now. :-)

I've never heard of jumping to a biopsy right after 1 abnormal cell test. Usually they just do another test to see if the results are the same first. Its the most coservative, least invasive and least expensive route. There are many reasons why they can come back normal and the majority are benign. I would insist on another pap smear just to rule out any mistake on the previous test. I've had two in my lifetime come back "abnormal" and my GYN did another test and it came back normal.

I will definatly have you in my prayers. BUT, you may want to get a second opinon - why? I had a colposopy done almost 15 years ago in another state and when I was going over my history when I got pregnant about 8 years ago, my midwife was really suprised and mentioned that that was a rather archaic (sp) practice and not a "best practice" in the treatment and monitoring of pre-cancerous cells - even 15 years ago! I know everyone's history is different, so maybe yours does warrant this. I don't want to stir the pot too much here, but just know there are many, many optiosn for treatment and sometimes when the do the colposcopy, they remove all the abnormal cells inadvertently.
Best, best, best wishes on a positive outcome, regardless!

Hi T.:

You are not alone. I had years of abnormal cell readings followed by colposcopies and biopsies. The colposcopy is like a mini camera placed inside you so your ob/gyn can have a larger view of the cells. It's pretty painless. The biopsy feels like a minor menstrual cramp. Chances are your ob/gyn will indulge you in a mindless discussion to get your mind off it.

It sounds like he/she is just erring on the side of caution. I'd rather have a conservative doc like mine because I have a family history.

I wish you well.

Hello, I feel the need to share, for this has happened to me several times. The first time scared me to death. I even had my husband there for support. I was tested for HPV and did have one of the types that causes cancer. Although, the paps would come back abnormal the coposcopys would turn out good. Not to sound like a healthfood nut, I started taking Acidophilus (the good stuff, in pill form not in yogurt). I also take biotin, multi, co-q and drink green tea. (no sugar or sugar substance). Stayed away from Sugar. Whenever I have been faithful to this for several month, my pap comes back good. I am not sure what the science is, but it works for me.
