I had a bad experience with an epidural procedure and now have a spinal headache that has lasted for the past 2 1/2 weeks since delivery. Has anyone else experienced it, and how long did it last?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I had an evaluation by the hospital, and they said they weren't comfortable doing the blood patch because I had 3 holes in my back from where they tried the epidural and didn't know which one was the problem. It is better when I lay down and it's already been confirmed as a spinal headache. I called today to get some more T3's because at least it makes the pain a little more foggy. Thank you for all your wonderful answers.

Worst experience of my life. The headache was the most pain I've had in my life including child birth. I ended up going to the ER because I couldn't take it another day. I had a spinal patch. 20cc of my own blood were taken and inserted in the epidural site. It was IMMEDIATE relief.

Yes I did back in may. Ok first don't put your feet up. Second you need to get a massage and chiropractic adjustment helped me. But if your headache is severe I would go back to the hospital you delivered and go to the baby area and let them know you have been having a severe head ache since you delivered. There is a proceedure they can do to get rid of it. I would either call the mother baby unit or your gyno.

Hi J.,
I'm an OB nurse and have had patients with this problem, I have also experienced a spinal headache and they're the worst! (and I get headaches all the time)
A spinal headache will feel better when you lay down, but worsen when you sit or stand.
If this is what you're experiencing, call your doctor. He may want you to be evaluated by the anesthesia department. They may want to draw blood from your arm, then inject your own blood into the same space where the epidural was...the blood clots and forms a seal so the cerebral spinal fluid quits leaking.
In the meantime, drink lots & lots of water, some coffee (or tea) for the caffeine, and tylenol (can take 3 regular or if you have a prescription for tylenol #3 from delivery, use that).
It really should be getting better by now, it's not normal for it to last too long. I have never heard of 1 lasting a year. Mine lasted about a week after a spinal tap, my step-daughter for about 2 or 3 weeks after a c-section.

good luck! and hope you feel better soon!

This happened to me, too. Nothing was working, not even tylenol 3 and my head was killing me. What eventually made my headache go away was benedryl and caffeine. Obviously, check with your doctor and pediatrician before taking anything, especially if you're breast feeding. Hope you feel better soon!

Hi J.!
i am SO SORRY that this happened to you too! It happened to me 5 years ago when having our only child. the Aniestoligosist Poked my Spinal cord causing it to leak, talk about a headache!! I was in the hospital fo TWO Weeks, and had to send my newborn home with my Aunt. VERY SAD, but I had the blood patch,. was in the hospital that 2 weeks, the headache barley went away at all. but enough to want to "live" at that point. it was so bad, i would rather have been dead, NO KIDDING. WOW right!
So what i can tell you from my case was, that it took OVER A YEAR for the headache to go to a Dull non invading my life headache, and by 18 months i was relieved fully of the pain. So i have to tell you the truth here, its a lonnnnnngggg road, But remain grateful that you were not paralized, that was the MAIN thing I foucsed on. they did not paralize me!
Also i could feel the site in my back for a good TWO years after!
PRAY SISTA, Pray!!!
God's Blessings to you!
Andrea

My MIL told me that her headache went away at about 4 weeks post partum. I have heard some women say that it took less time for them. So really, its a toss up! I am sorry you are going through this, hang in there!

No one should have to go this long with this type of pain. You should've been given relief with a bloodpatch a day or two after it hit. Spinal headaches are pure evil. Get to emergency, with a friend, and get relief!!! Do not pass GO do not collect $200!!!!!
