My son has very enlarged tonsils. He is 7 and has had these for several yrs. We have seen 2 ENT Dr's and gotten their answers, I am satisfied just wanted to see if there is someone who has had their child's tonsils taken out and what the recovery time is, what should I expect, 1 more referral. I would like to have this done on a break from school. Any referrals and experiences appreciated.

Dr. A. Coffey was recommended to me when my daughter had to get tubes. She works out of the Children's Hospital at Legacy and surgery center in plano. She did a great job with my daughter and have heard many great things about her.

I second Dr. Mehendale, ###-###-####. He is a dad and talks to you on a parent level with great understanding and compassion. I got the recommendation on here when I posted a similar question last March and 80% of the moms recommended him.

I highly recommend Dr. Tim Trone. His office is at Medical city, but I think he now has a Plano office. I know he has privileges at a surgery center in Plano, because he took out my 5 yr old daughter's tonsils last spring at a Plano center. And the surgery center was set up for children and it was just absolutely wonderful. Dr Trone took tonsils out of one of my children at the age of 3 and one at the age of 4. My children recovered very quickly, but I understand the younger they are the quicker they recover. Dr. Trone's staff should be able to explain it all to you. He is a pediatric specialist so he does many many tonsilectomies. Good luck; but it was not nearly as bad as I feared it would be.

I too recommend Dr. Mehendale. My daughter (22 months) just had her adenoids taken out. When he was examining her, he examined her doll first. He has kids and you can tell because he does things like that. He is SUPER nice and very honest about your options.

Dr. Mehendale is wonderful. He is very kind. His approach is calming. My son (@15 months) had tubes put in. He has also treated my other 2 children and myself for sinus issues. His office staff is fabulous as well. You can tell he is very considerate and caring to his staff.

I am an RN and worked at Medical Center of Plano, which is where I met him. My daughter and son had ear tubes and my daughter had her adenoids removed by him and the whole experience was great! My daughters tonsils are large but were not the source of the problem for her, so he didn't remove them. He is conservative, yet aggressive with treatment when needed. He is very gentle and patient with kids. Even my dad went to him for his sinus surgery and loved him:)

My daughter had her tonsils and adenoids out at age 8. Very enlarged tonsils that got infected constantly, making her very sick! Her ENT was Dr. Farrah Siddiqui at Allergy, Ear, Nose, and Throat Clinic of N.E. Texas, in McKinney, although I'm not sure if she is with the practice anymore because she's not listed on their website http://www.allergyent.com. She did a good job and had a friendly, nonthreatening personality.

The day my daughter got her tonsils out we were actually able to buy ticks for the Hannah Montana concert in Ft. Worth which was being held the following week (I think it was 6 days later). She was OK that day . . . not her typical boisterous self and still needing the tylenol w/codiene to help with the pain. So while all the other girls were screaming and jumping around, she was sitting quietly. My assessment was that the worst of the pain is in that first week. Just don't lie to your kiddo about the pain, although don't freak him out, either! I told her it would probably hurt as much as when they were infected, but I found out it was worse. It wasn't my intention to "lie" I just really didn't know, and she wasn't happy with me for cushioning the truth (but that's just her . . . she always wants you to tell it the way it is).

Overall, while the experience is obviously not a happy one, it went very well w/normal recovery time and at that age the memory of the pain fades quickly.

Dr. Roger Skiles is phenomenal. He has done tubes for both of our children (4 and 8) and did a tonsillectomy for our son this past November (our son is 4). He is great with children and adults and is such a competent and caring physician. Our whole family loves him. He practices at Baylor Frisco.

Recovery time is about 10 days. Days 2 through 5 or so aren't too bad but then the scabs fall off and the pain increases. We saw our ENT on day 10 for a follow-up check up and I mentioned that I thought the patient was to have been better on day 10 and he responded that it would be like someone had flipped a switch and our son would go from feeling pretty bad to really good. We got home and that afternoon, it was truly as if someone had flipped a switch. The key to surviving those 10 days is pain management. You cannot (I can't stress that enough) miss a dose of the pain medication. My husband and I took turns every other night sleeping in our guest bedroom with our son and setting an alarm to wake us every 4 hours to administer the medication. I think we backed off to every 6 hours around day 5 but then the scabs fell off and it was back to every 4 hours. I fixed soft foods for meals and our son was okay with that. I made baked chicken and mashed potatoes, meatloaf, pasta, rice, buttered white bread (much easier to eat than wheat for some reason). We are so happy now that we had it done. Our son had apnea and that is completely gone and he sleeps so much better and longer. His voice is a bit higher and the kissing tonsils are gone. They literally touched in back and made his speech sound like he had something at the back of his mouth. Now his speech is perfectly clear. He obviously just feels better too.
