Endometrial/Uterine Ablation

I am considering this procedure and was wondering if anyone has had it done and if so what your thoughts are. I'm having problems with heavy periods that are coming every 21 days, night sweats and generally not feeling well. I've had a tubal ligation so we're out of our child bearing time. I am 47 and started when I was 9. I've read sometimes it helps and others haven't had such good luck with it. I value this group, so I'm going to the Mama's :)

What can I do next?

I had one done several years ago and I have to say it really helped me. I no longer have periods and my pms symptoms subsided considerably. I highly recommend it.

I think you should go to the Dr and get the pros and cons on it, I think you might see that you would like to go through with it just to make things a little simpler during the "monthly" times. I hope it all works out with you, and things the huge blood flow calms down, because I know it sucks!

This was an option for me about 10 yrs ago and I opted for complete Hysterectomy instead.

Per my Dr..... cons were that it does not always take and you may have to get it again in 1-3 yrs. BLAH....I wanted to be DONE

Hysterectomy was the best decision I ever made.

My SIL, had the procedure done with no side effects and loved it.

Everyone is different.

I had the procedure 3 years ago and I could not be happier. My cycles were close and very heavy. I had to use two types of products to control the flow. The most I have now is a jelly/mucus type discharge. I talked to my doctor for 2 years before deciding to have it done. He told me the same thing as another post below, some people it completely takes it away, some lessens the flow and some it doesn't help at all. I am glad I fell in the category of-completely done!! I went in on a Friday morning and was back home by 11 am. That included going to the pharmacy to get medicine. Even though they put the medicine in the IV to keep you from throwing up, I did anyway. The remainder of the weekend I rested and was back to work on Monday. Good luck with your decision and procedure.

Are you looking at doing the Thermal or Cryo? For the thermal you have to be under general anesthesia. It's usually very painful...lots of cramping. The cryo can be done in office. Often way less painful. There is no guarantee with either one that it is a sure fire "fix". At your age it could be way more of a hormonal issue. I would recommend you have saliva tests done to check your hormone levels. You could be in need of something as simple as progesterone cream. Talk to your doc or search out a Natropath.

I had it done 6 years ago for heavy bleeding and fibroids. It really helped with the bleeding. It was great not having to worry about going out when it was that time every month. As for the fibroids they came back and I just recently had a hysterectomy. I had pretty much had exhausted all my options for the fibroids. Talk more to your doctor but for me it was a great decision.

I have not had it done but the dr did mention that might be something for me to think about considering ive had awful periods since having my three yr old. But the one thing he mentioned is this procedure would definitely help with the actual blood part but not the emotional hormonal mood swing part..My main problem is being up and down with my moods not just the heavy periods so i thought well i guess i will just try the bc pills and see if that helps any.Im waiting for my next cycle to start the pills and im praying it helps if not i will consider the ablation.
Please let us know if you continue with the procedure!

There are lots of horror stories out there, but mine is not one of them. I had this done right before Thanksgiving last year. The procedure was uneventful and recovery was nonexistent. I went home and slept a few hours after it was done. When I woke up we hopped in the car and drove to South Carolina to spend Thanksgiving with my family. A couple of advil right after the procedure were enough to handle the mild cramping that first day. No other medicine was ever needed. There was a discharge for about three months afterward, but clear and not heavy at all (doc said that was normal.) Pantiliners were enough to handle that. I still wear a liner every day for insurance, but have had no issues or problems since the procedure. It was a lifesaver for me. I hope this info helps and wish you the best.

It was the best thing I ever did. I had the thermal one (rather than the cryo one). That's the one my dr. was more experienced with. I was having ultra heavy periods also. I had it done in Aug. and after about 4-6 weeks of spotting, I haven't had any period since - nothing!!! Yes I did have some cramping but it only lasted about 36 hours and it was just like really bad PMS cramps. I also was able to have it done in the office rather than the hospital even though general anasthesia was used. (The hospital anastheseologist came to the office to do it). My dr. did say that not everyone is that lucky though. Some get lighter, some just spot and for a very few it might not make any difference. Most insurance companies will pay for most or all of it (it only cost me $300 for the out of network nursing staff). Best money I ever spent. Do make sure that your dr. is expereinced with the ablations. Let me know if you have any questions!

I had it done a year ago. It did help with heavy, heavy periods, I no longer stand up and bleed to my knees. But, I still have periods and other pre-menopause symptoms. On the down side, the procedure changed my ph balance during my periods, so now after a period I get vaginosis with discharge for 4-5 days after my period has ended. Nothing I have tried (antibiotics, hydrogen peroxide, herbs, vitamins, tea tree oil) makes it stop until that 4-5 days is up.

I had it done for the same reason about 2 years ago. It has been great every since. I had little to no pain after the proceedure and now have no periods (that is the best part).

I have not had it doen but have a very close friend who got it done a couple of years ago and she is absolutely ecstatic that she has no more periods. She was always mild around her period so she didn't have manic mood swings or really bad PMS but her schedule got really creative and this took care of that for her.

Good luck
