"Emotional" During Periods

Any Mom's here get "Emotional' during that time of the Month? I am 48, and for the last 3 Years, I have noticed that I am EXTREMELY sensitive about everything during my period. It's gotten to the point where I easily cry, or get angry over the silliest things. My Dr. hasn't told me that I am getting close to "The Change" yet, so I don't know what to think. I just know that around this time each month, I start blowing things out of proportion, and reading to much into things. I also tend to get really "down" and Depressed at this time. It's pretty scary sometimes.

Anyone else dealing with this?

What can I do next?

Not during it, but just before - PMS. And I forget every month so when I go completely whacky, I have no idea why. I just assume everything is harder, more upsetting, etc. then it comes the following day and I'm like "Oh thank God, I thought it was me".

My good friend is the same - she'll text me and seems really off, and I will say "Are you PMSing?" and sure enough, she is. We're both close to 50 too.

I'm 48 as well. I have noticed some changes the last year or so. I asked the doc if I could be pre-menopausal and if they needed to check my hormones and he said even if I was, they don't give you meds anymore because the risks of the meds are higher than the issues of menopause, if that makes sense. I'm not as bad as you describe, I mostly feel like eating, like I can't stop thinking about it. So I snack for 4 days then I'm back to normal. lol Maybe ask the doc next time you go, wouldn't hurt IMO. Good luck.

Yes, I dealt with it too. I'm so happy it's over, I haven't had a period in more than 7 yrs.
I also noticed my body odors were stronger right before and during my period. Everything from my sweat to bowel movements smelled stronger then went back to normal.

There are OTC herbal remedies that help a lot. Black Cohosh, a combination gel cap of magnesium, calcium, and one more I can't remember, and soy isoflavins help a lot. (If you look through the OTC herbal remedies at Walgreens or any pharmacy you will find the combo gel cap.

Getting out for a walk or other exercise helps a lot too. Get the heart and lungs pumping and sweat it out does make you feel better.

Google PMDD and Pre-menopausal. Your doc doesn't know everything. He only knows what you're telling him.

Yes...to the point for a week or so I think I need an antidepressant..then I realize I'm ok...so I go for a few weeks and then I'm right back to feeling crazy again.

I really don't like the idea of taking birth control since hubs had a vasectomy.. but maybe that is @an alternative.??

well, maybe your doctor hasn't told you, but have you asked? doctors aren't clairvoyants, and you're at the age where it's a very likely possibility.
my doctor never did tell me. i know myself and my body and knew without some sort of official decree.
it's good that you're aware of it, and can be proactive about preparing for and dealing with it. when your period is due, give yourself some latitude, try to put off important decisions, and let your husband know so he can be extra supportive (or quiet<G>) and help you not spiral down.
if you're really that depressed and it's scaring you, then don't just passively wait for the doctor to do something, go and explain it and have her refer you or help you out.
whether it's menopause or depression you can get help for it if you need it.
