my 11 week old is currently on Similac Alumentum and Zantac. The Zantac is for reflux and the Alumentum is for milk allergy. The GI is not 100% what was causing her discomfort so he put her on both at the same time. Now it has been over a month since she has been on both of these and my daughter still is uncomfortable when she eats and right after. SHe arches her back chokes, coughs and and spits up ALOT!! My GI had suggested to put my daughter on the Enfamil AR but warned me that if she does have a milk allergy she with become very uncomfortable again but if she just has relux then it could realy benefit her with her remaining symptoms. He is kind of leaving it up to me as to what I think is best. Either way I am not going to hurt my child I am just trying figure out what makes her more comfortable. My question is how did others do with this formula? Did it help witht the spit up and the other symptoms of reflux? Also did it make your baby gain too much weight? My daughter is in the 95 percentile for her weight (even with the large amounts of spit up) and I don't want a thicker formula to cause her to be overweight. Did this formula help with gas or make it worse? and also did it make you child constipated at all? I guess I just want to think about the pros and cpons of changing her formula.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I tried the Enfamil AR and after only four bottles I knew that it was not right for my daughter. She got even more uncomfortable and was still spitting up like crazy except this time it was a chunky spit up. THe last straw was when she trew up all over me. So that was that and now she is back on the alumentum. After the first bottle of going back on Alumentum she was so much happier and went right to sleep and slept through the night. Well now I know for sure that she has a milk allergy and I will just have to deal with the large amounts of spit up. Hopefully when she starts eating solid foods the amount of spit up will get better.

I've never dealt with reflux, just milk allergy. Not all kids with a milk allergy can tolerate Alimentum or Neutramogen. It is milk based and the milk protein is not totally broken down. I would try an amino acid based formula like Neocate or Elecare. They are completely milk protein free. Personally I would never give a child suspected of milk allergy a milk bases formula. Your GI should have samples to give you. I would also look into increasing or changing reflux meds before trying a milk based formula. Chilean grow very quicky and their dose constantly needs to be evaluated. Also there are products (NOT cereal) you can use to thicken any formula to help with reflux the same way a AR formula is thicker. You have many options. Good luck.

Hmm...is Zantac the only medication for reflux that she's tried so far?
My babies had reflux, and one of them needed to change to a different medication because the one he was on wasn't working for him. I'd ask the doctor about switching meds before going to a formula that is milk based, since she has an allergy. If that doesn't work, consider taking her to a pediatric gastroenterologist.
Best wishes!! =o)

I would have thught the Alumentum would have done the trick since the enzymes are broken down further than in the AR plus the Alumentum is not milk based. You could try the AR and see. If symptoms are worse stick to the Alumentum. I used the Enfamil Nutramigen and it was fantastic for all three of my kids.

Thank you for sharing your situation - I feel for you, as our 4 mth old son has had very similar issues since soon after he was born. All the input from the Mom's responding is helpful. It is so very frustrating to see him arch is back, choke, cough and spit up a ton all day. The weight gain is misleading to me. The doctor keeps telling me "he must be ok, as he's gaining the weight" and "he'll grow out of this". How can/did you find out what the allergy (allergies) is/are? My doctor said he could get tested, yet another doctor said he's too young - the immune system is not developed so a test for allergies isn't applicable. I breast feed, and use Enfamil Infant formula about 1 every other day. I feel like no matter how I alter my diet, the same results happen. Thus, it's very hard to know what alleviates or makes it worse. Perhaps the recommendation for a Pediatric Gastro is a good option now. I hesitate to do anything that requires him to go through many procedures. Any other breast feeding Mom's have further insights that worked for you? did you change your diet - for how long? I have ordered that Aloe Juice. Look forward to it.

All 3 of my boys were on zantac for reflux. I now give them Ultimate Aloe juice. I use strawbery kiwi and they love it. They are always in the fridge getting it. It's all natural so they will absorb what they need and pee out the rest. They are all off their zantac and have no belly issues. It will also boost the immune system They never get sick. Just a couple ounces a day works great

Ask your doctor if it could be Dysphagia. It's when the swallowing muscle is not strong enough and formula pools in the back of the throat. The child may choke and spit up what is in the back of the throat.

Sometimes, you may need to changing the nipple or bottle. That can be quite helpful.
I know this is a hard time for you and baby. But it will resolve itself. Just keep asking questions to your doctor and if you don't like the answer your are getting, go to another doctor. Good luck.
