Eliminating Smells

My boyfriend and I recently moved into a new house with our 4 kids (2 from his previous marriage, 2 from mine). His 2 share the basement as their bedroom. There is a crawl space in the basement, with a wall about 5 1/2 feet high. On the other side of the wall, the crawl space is made up of dirt covered by what looks like black heavy plastic. His youngest and my youngest, both 9-year-old boys, decided recently that it would be ok to urinate on this plastic. The boys have been dealt with, but the smell is STRONG and keeps working its way up from the basement into the main areas of the house. We have, of course, mopped it up with paper towels. We then sprayed the area HEAVILY with lavender scented bleach, opened the windows, and wiped the bleach up. The smell is still there! Any ideas on what else we can do to get rid of this odor?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone for your help! I have used Melaleuca products in the past, and I swear by most of them. I didn't have any Sol-U-Mel on hand, but I went to the store and bought pet odor remover. I took out the plastic sheeting and VERY liberally covered the dirt underneath it with the pet smell remover and within a few hours, the smell was completely gone! Thank you all again!

Number One: Get married or seek separate living arrangements.

Number Two: After you have done that, if you are still dealing with the smell, use a cleaner that has biologically engineered bacteria that eat smells. An example, if you can find it, is OdorEndZyme, which used to be available through Insight Unlimited. www.insightllc.net

I had old, sick cats who had a LOT of accidents on the carpet. I used Odorzout based on the recommendation of the "Queen of Clean." It worked very, very well within 24 hours and is completely non-toxic. It supposedly even gets out skunk odor.

I'm moving into a house that has a funny smell to it too. I cleaned with vinegar and the smell is going away. You can also put a bowl of vinegar in the area and let it sit overnight and it should "soak up" the odor. Good Luck!!

Kids N Pets, an enzymatic odor eliminator available from places like Walmart (at least that's where I got mine). You may need more than one bottle, because the way it works, you need to saturate the affected area, then let it dry. It effectively took incontinent old cat pee smell out of my carpet, and both baby pee and vomit smell out of my mattress (don't ask!), which is why I now keep a bottle of it under my sink at all times.

They make products you can buy at most grocery or pet stores that eliminate the smells from pet urine, such as Simple Solution, that also work for this type of problem too.

Regular cleansers and even bleach (as you discovered) will do nothing to help. The only way to get rid of it is with an enzyme neutralizer. That stuff actually digests the proteins left over in the urine, something no cleanser will do.

Sounds like they peed on more than the plastic. You may have to get the pet odor remover and spray everything. Have the boys get in there and spray every place they marked.
Yuk.

Is it too much plastic to replace? Did the urine reach the dirt? I have used borax to get rid of smells, so you might be able to sprinkle it around and let it stay there a while.

Sol-U-Mel is amazing! I've used it on my daughter's matress after she wet the bed. My son is starting potty training and we've used it on places where he's gone on the carpet. We have absolutely no smell of urine. Let me know if you want to know more about how to get it and good luck!

Try some of the pet urine treatments, or the treatments they make for diaper pails. Might work better since its developed for urine.
