Eli's Poor Little Head:(

OK, Eli learned to pull up in his crib, but doesn't know how to get down yet. I can hear him crash in to the crib rails as he falls and then he screams. So, question is, what is the lesser of two evils? Do I put the bumper in with the sids risk and save his head or do I leave it the way he is knowing he will keep banging his head until he figures out how to sit/lay back down?
I know about the "breathable" bumper pads. However, they aren't really bumper pads but "can't stick a leg or arm out" barriers. They won't protect his head at all :( I need the cooshie padding of a regular bumper pad to make any difference.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

He learned to lower himself pretty quickly so it's fine now. The new problem is that he is strong enough to pull the pacifier clip off his clothes and then ends up dropping the pacifier outside the crib and screaming until we go in and find it and give it back to him:( it never ends...

My daughter Kaylee has always had a bumper. But, I do know that the more mobile they get, the less risk they are at. I don't think I would worry if he can pull up to a stand. They can sense discomfort when they sleep, and if he can stand up, he should be strong enough to move around the way he needs to if he senses any discomfort.

i would totally put the bumper back in. at 8 months old, his risk for sids is so low, i wouldn't even worry about it. pretty much once they are old enough to roll over and move around that risk falls tremendously. and i would also try working with eli during the day to show him how to sit back down, but one day he'll figure out on his own anyway. good luck!

Poor Eli! The dilema is this...put the bumper on for softness and safety...I second the sids risk...way gone for breastfed baby at this age...BUT my other concern is if he is climbing and pulling...will he then just use the bumper as a step stool! Besides he is probably not hitting the rail along the very bottom edge it is probably higher. So I guess, when is he "hanging out" in his crib and wanting to get out. Is it when he first wakes up..you know sleepy-sleepy ELI then CRASH...oh he's awake now...or does he have fun playtime in there for sanity sake:) then he decides to play superman? Other than telling him no climbing and putting him on his bottom in the crib if you see him do it-immediate response to action to help him coorelate- and try not to leave him in there for long once you know he is awake. Actual climbing out of the crib may not be far behind. Sorry! Rub his little noggin for me:) C.

I had a crib bumper in my son's bed since we put the crib up. If your son is pulling up on his own, the risk of SIDS is almost none! Once a baby is mobile, can roll from back to front & vice versa, their risk is reduced by over 50%. I would get one and save his poor little head. You can't stop him from doing it, nor do you really want to, it's natural progress. They do also make the "Breathable" bumper pads, which I'm sure are more expensive than a regular one, and at his age, I really would not be overly concerned about SIDS anymore.

I would ask your pediatrician and see what he thinks.

Congrats on your son's latest milestone! I'd say if he is old enough to pull up, he's at a pretty low risk for SIDS at this point. My pediatrician even said that she removed the bumpers in her kids' cribs when they were newborns but put them back when the kids started pulling up and bumping their heads. I think you're ok to use bumpers now.

Hope that helps!

Hi S....did you know that they now have on the market 'breathable' bumper pads? I know most large baby stores carry them. They come in a few solid colors, and i hear are absolutely wonderful! They come highly recommended by the SIDS organization. I have'nt had the opportunity to use one yet, but am due to deliver baby #4 in 2 more weeks, so we'll see then. They look really neat, and like they will work as promised. Hey, if the SIDS foundation approves it, i trust it! ;) Hope Eli's head gets to feeling better!!!

I have a 10month old son and he does the same thing, I also have two girls that are older and I dont remember having this problem with them but I do with my son. I do not have anything in the crib with my son, because a little crying everytime he decides to stand up and fall is a lot better than sids. You are in a loose loose situation I know but eventually they will understand and things will stop. Eli(my son) was a lot worse around 8months, he too did not know how to get down once he was up and then would drop but now he drops but hits his head (not everytime but sometimes). They grow and learn and I am sure your son, like mine, will learn eventually to get their balance a little better and master climbing out of the crib before you know it and then we have that to worry about......lol I hope that everything turns out okay for you and Im sure your little Eli will be just fine! :)

I would put the bumper pad in there. As long as he's not a climber and can get out, it would be safer in my opinion if he had the pads to save the bumps. Both my kids had bumper pads from birth until now (one is almost 2) and they love curling up next to them and haven't had that problem. Save the noggin, the SIDS risk is almost nil.

i have had a crib bumper in my daughter's crib since day 1 and never had a single problem. I just tie the top to the rail and tuck the bottom down between the matress and side so she can't get her head under it. it keeps her safe from bumping her head and keeps her from smothering too. but me ped said once they hit about 5 months and are able to turn over on their own, the risk of sids is next to nothing.
