Elementry School Experiences in Contra Costa County - Good And/or Bad

Looking to buy a house and am interested in real-life feedback on the elementary schools in CC county. We're currently in Pleasant Hill but looking primarily in Concord because of lower housing costs. I've looked into the ratings but I know that doesn't always tell the whole story. Any suggestions as to the best schools And/Or schools to avoid would be greatly appreciated!

In Mt. Diablo school district, my kids and I love Eagle Peak Montessori School. It is a public, charter, elementary school that uses a lottery for an admission process. They have sibling priority, so once your first child is in, your family can continue.

I went to West Wood Elementary and now my cousin goes there. It's an excellent school with great programs (my cousin has become quite fluent in American Sign Language.)

The teachers are great and if you move into the nearby neiborhoods I'm sure you will love it.

Good luck.

I'd look at greatschools.net because parents and students can add their reviews there, it's not just the scores.

My daughter finished at Monte Gardens Elementary this year and we liked it very much. Her teachers were always very nice. I have heard from a lot of people that they dislike the principal, though I never had any issues personally. I've also heard from some parents that they felt like if their child wasn't in GATE they didn't exist.

My sister's kids go to Ayers, and she likes it there so far.

Best of luck! C.

There are two schools that I would highly recommend that would allow you to leave anywher in the Mt. Diablo Unified SChool District. Monte Gardens and Sequoia Elementary. They are great schools and their parents are proud to get their kids to attend. When your child is three you can get her on the list.

Schools that I know have great reputations are Ayers Elementary, I hear good things about Westwood and Mountain View as well. Schools that I would stear away from El Monte, Sun Terrace, Wren Avenue... I hope that helps.

I have two children at Monte Gardens, I live within walking distance. I am a huge fan. Even if you are not sure I would recommend getting your child on their list, when it gets closer to time for her to go to school you can call and have her removed. They get their list of incoming kindergartners ready about a year in advance so the close to registration the least likely you are to get in. I have never heard of anyone who registered their child at three not get in. Also they have a sibling priority list, so if you have another child they will get first priority when registering in the future. Rumor has it they give priority to those within walking distance. I hope that helps.
