So, we are about 6 weeks away from moving to the area and we have narrowed down what we think are houses in good school districts. I was hoping there were some Moms on here who could give me some insight into what schools your kids go to and what you think of the school, and the neighborhoods surrounding them. I will have one in 1st grade now and one going into kindergarten in the fall. Please bear in mind I don't know the arean well so any details or street names you can provide would be so helpful. I really don't want to end up at a school we are unhappy with. Thanks so much!
Does any one know anything about Seatack or Holland Elementary schools?

What can I do next?

My daughter is in kindergarten at Lynnhaven Elementary School. It is a Title One school, and I think Seatack is a Title One school and I know Holland is. Why is that important? Title One schools have full day kindergarten and get funding from the Federal Government to offset any lack of education from the child's environment. With first grade subjects being taught in kindergarten, it is really hard to cram everything the child needs to know into their brains in half day kindergarten. At the non-title one schools, they have half-day kindergarten and you really don't want your child in the full day class because it means you didn't teach them anything before they went to school and they have to catch-up But still, the children with full day kindergarten get so much more out of their classroom experience. They just have more learning time.

Overall, the Virginia Beach Public schools try very hard to identify the gifted children and the children who need help. It is a very good school system and they try to be consistent in the education the schools offer. That is not to say your child won't get a teacher they dislike or with whom they don't click. That could happen at an expensive private school, too.

Of course John B. Dey on Great Neck Road probably sends more students to Old Donation, the gifted school, but who can afford the houses in the neighborhoods it serves? I think your first priority is to find affordable housing. If you don't like the school in your district, you can always try to have your child moved out of district. If you need it, a couple of schools are year-round schools. Go to www.vbschools.com for more information. I'm pretty neutral about my daughter's school. I'm just glad she has full day kindergarten, and her teacher seems to have switched on her brain.

Best wishes. We'll probably have an unusually cold winter this year.

My 4th grader goes to Windsor Oaks Elementary, which feeds into Independence Middle School and then into Princess Anne High. We've been very pleased with Windsor Oaks....my daughter attended a private Christian school back in California before we moved here in 2007, and I love her public school now so much more than I did her private one!

Windsor Oaks is in the Windsor Woods neighborhood - South Plaza Trail between Holland and Rosemont. I live on Woodlake Road, which is near the So Plaza Trail & Water Oak intersection. If you're looking to buy, there is a house next door to us that has a fabulous view of Lake Trashmore!

Best of luck to you in your move!

I would steer clear of Holland Elem. They have low test scores compared to some of the other elementary schools. My son goes to Plaza Elem. which is a year round school. He is in 1st grade this year. I love the school. His teachers are wonderful. If you don't like the idea of year round school there is Brookwood right next door. Plaza and Brookwood are located off of S. Lynnhaven right across the street from Lynnhaven Mall. If you have any questions about the year round schools please let me know and I will answere any questions.

I work for the school division in VB. I am in the high school so I don't know a whole lot about the elementary schools. As someone else did, I recommend that you go to the division's website at www.vbschools.com and do some research. You will find that there are a lot of elementary schools in VB. You can even key in a street address or neighborhood to determine which schools (elem, middle and high)that your child would attend. Don't rely on the realtors to know. They often give misinformation.
Someone mentioned going out of zone if you are not happy with the school that is in your zone. At the high school level, it is not easy to get out of zone approval. I've had students who have been at the school for 2 years and the family moves to another zone. The request to stay at the current school has been denied once the current school year is finished. If that happens to someone who has lived here for at least 2 years, I don't know that someone just moving to the area would be able to go out of zone...unless in the case of year round schools.
Our son goes to Kempsville elementary school and we are very happy with the school. I know several co-workers whose children also attend/have attended there and they are also very happy with the school. It is a very community oriented school and I like that.
I hope all goes well with your move.

I have not heard too much about Holland Elementary so I really cannot comment on that school. I live in the W.T. Cooke Elementary School district (Oceanfront - 1st through 30 th street) and I am very pleased. I have not heard many good things about Seatack. I know that in terms of SLA scores Linkhorn Elementary (Hilltop area - First Colonial Road) is the best district, I have neighbors who have out of district transfers to have their kids go to Linkhorn Elementary. Some of the schools in Virginia Beach that I would not feel comfortable sending my kids are Seatack, Birdneck Elementary and Newtown.

I hope this helps.

The Great Bridge and Hickory areas of Chesapeake are wonderful. The schools are excellent and the neighborhoods are very quiet. We moved to Great Bridge about 1 1/2 yr ago and we like it a lot. Shopping is close, neighborhood is quiet. My husband is gone a lot and I feel very safe home alone with the kids. You might have to buy a sightly smaller house to be in these neighborhoods but it has been well worth it. We thought the commute from Norfolk to Chesapeake would be longer and it really has not been bad at all. He is home usually within 30min. I am still close enough to VB that I go the commissary at Oceana each week.
