I need to bring an Egytian food or snack to a Girl Scout event. I want it to be something kid-friendly so the girls will like it (not just try it but actually like what it tastes like). Ideas?

What can I do next?

toasted pita wedges, hummos

tabouleh (salad made with minced parsley, romaine, onions, tomato, cuccumber, dressed with olive oil, lemon, salt & pepper)

foul (pronounced fool) muhammadas- cook two cans of fava beans, reserve the "water" from one. add 3 cloves (or more garlic), the juice of a lemon, olive oil, a teaspoon of cumin, and at least 3 tablespoons of tahini (sesame seed paste), add the reserved water if necessary to bring it to a loose chilli like consistency. add salt and pepper to taste. remove from heat. serve garnished with any or all of the following- parsley, scallions, diced tomatoes, a fried egg, pomegranate berries, cuccumber, yellow onions.

koshari- you'll have to google the recipe for this one. I remember it was a popular food in egypt, you could get it at most street vendors and restaurants. it has pasta, chick peas, lentils in it and its topped with a savory tomato based sauce. I thought it was really delicious.

good luck to you and yours,
F. B.

PS- My folks are from the middle east, I grew up on this food. Ous DS, 2 eats it all the time. Some of it might be a bit of a stretch for a delaware girl scout, but I think it's worth a shot.

Are falafels egyptian? I get the mix from the grocery store. You just add water, form into balls and pan fry. They are like vegetarian meatballs. They are not too messy and you could serve them with tzatziki sauce (cucumber and yogurt dressing), by themselves or in pita.

Anything with nuts might be a problem if one of the girls has a nut allergy. If nuts are OK, baklava is yummy and I've seen it at Costco.

Dates are great and rather sweet and figs are good too.
I like pomegranates but they are a bother to eat with all those tiny pits.
Pomegranate juice might be easier.

Can't help with a snack. Just wanted to says when I saw your subject, I knew it had to be Girl Scout related. My dd's troop has Jamaica for World Thinking Day. Her leader also has two other troops one of which is doing Egypt. I just cut out letters for the country names for the three troops' display boards.

There's also the standard funerary inscription on Ancient Egyptian tombs (although being an Islamic county -mostly- there's not a lot of people who drink anymore).

"1000 loaves of bread & 1000 beers & every good thing."

I assume you're talking about modern Egypt, but the ancient is fun.

Another fun thing is the Arabic / Arrabiya word for Egypt instead of the English.

Masri.
MAHZ-ree = Egyptian

Masur
MAH-zoor = Egypt
