Fill a cup half way with water. Drop the egg in and if it floats, its a bad egg. If it sinks to the bottom, it's still good.
Does anyone know how long eggs are good? I got eggs from my parent's the day they were laid (the have chickens) 3 weeks-1 month ago. Are they still good? Is there something I can do to test, if they are still safe? Normally, we go through eggs faster then that...so I'm worried they are bad. Thanks!!
Thanks everyone!! I did the water test and they all sank. Great suggestion!

If they've been refrigerated they are still good. In answer to another post, someone responded with the info that refrigerated eggs are good for some months. I know that eggs in my refrigerator have been good after a couple of months.
The main concern with eggs now is salmonella and there is no test for that. I vaguely remember some test involving spinning eggs and putting them in water that would tell whether or not the egg was rotten but you can tell that just by cracking the egg open.
Whoops, Debbie G. smile She got the eggs from her mother when they were freshly laid. Which reminded me, Michelle, that if your mother's hen house is clean and her chickens healthy on a good diet, you have a chance of having a better quality egg which will last a month longer in your refrigerator than would a store bought egg.
You can put the eggs in a bowl of water. If they sink, they are fine. If they float, throw them out. The reason bad eggs float is because sulfer gas has accumulated (that stinky smell you get from bad eggs), and that weighs less than the healthy egg with the white and yolk, and the water it is in. Gas floats, the solid sinks.
be safe and throw them out. If your worried this is what i found
Farmers have 30 days from the day an egg is laid to get it to stores. Then, the stores have another 30 days to sell the eggs. The USDA recommends a maximum of 5 weeks in your refrigerator before you discard your eggs. What does this all boil down to? On April 1, you could be eating an egg that was laid on Christmas.
Not to long ago I asked that exact same question to the lady at the egg farm here in Prosper. She said fresh eggs are good for 45 days. So, enjoy!
Crack them into a bowl (individually) as you want to use them. If they smell, they are bad (you cannot MISTAKE this smell). Otherwise, I have used eggs for several months without issue.
We had laying chickens up until last fall. Our eggs were good for a couple of months in the refrigerator. In fact, I never had one go bad and sometimes I had several cartons for an indefinite period of time.
Put the eggs in a big pan or bowl of cold water...if they float to the top they are bad...if they sink to the bottom they are okay.
when you crack em open you'll know! and the float test always works. Also home laid eggs are different then store bought and dont usually last as long. Crack one open!
Eggs are good for a remarkably long time. Fresh eggs will keep for a few weeks at room temp and longer if they are refrigerated. If they have been washed they won't keep quite as long. The water test is a good one if you are in doubt. And again, as soon as you crack it open you'll know.
My Mother-in-law got them fresh from down the road all her life and told me 6-8 weeks if kept cold.
when you crack them open you'll know ;)
As long as you've kept them refrigerated, they should be just fine. Most eggs are good for up to a month AFTER their expiration date on the carton in the store!
