Hi, This is my sons 1st day at Eduprize. He is in 4th grade. He came from Neely in Gilbert.
I just found out however, that he is in a combo-class with 3rd graders/with 4th. Do I have anything to worry about, as far
as repeating everything he learned last year?
For those of you who go there....How do they divide the 3rd grade material from 4th grade?
Just wondering how this works.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Be sure to attend Curriculum Night. There they will provide a presentation that describes the curriculum and address questions the parents may have.

I taught a class like this. It was even 3rd/4th grade. Amazingly enough, the students at this age have a very similar curriculum. They are all working on improving writing/reading, learning more about social studies and science, etc. In EVERY class, a teacher has to deal with a wide range of abilities. The main difference between the grades is the math level, and the teacher will likely need to teach two different math lessons each day. I would usually have one group work with manipulatives while I taught the other group, and then they would do independent practice while I taught the other lesson.

In the school where I worked, they had two sets of social studies and science lessons which were taught every other year. That way the students did not have any lessons repeated in the combined classes. It may be different at Eduprize. I have heard many good things about Eduprize, but don't know it firsthand. (I lived in Gilbert until 3 years ago.)

There may be some curriculum repeated, but it would be more likely because your son was in a different school, and not because of the combined classroom. When we moved my kids had some repetition just because we were in a different school district even though they were a year older. Each school district (or private school) teaches the curriculum when they choose, so it varies all over the state.

I don't know about that specific school, but my daughter was in a split 1st / 2nd grade class. The teacher is the one that gets screwed in this situation. S/he has to do 2 curiculums, 2 workplans, 2 different books etc. They will use the same curiculum as a regular 4th grade class - different books... the whole shebang.

If the teacher does it right a split class is WONDERFUL and the students are encouraged to be much more self-disciplined and self-motivated. In 4th grade your child can read directions etc so it won't be as hard for her to work at her own pace.

Plus - even though the total class size is the same, usually the grade size is smaller kids. So instead of the teacher having a discussion with 30 4th graders, the discussion will be among 15 4th graders so it's a more small group feel.

But yes - definitely go see what it's all about and make sure the teacher feels comfortable. Parent volunteers can also be super helpful in a split class to guide the 'other' class if the teacher is having a group discussion.

Hi T.,

I would talk with the teacher. They can give you the best information about what will be happening in class and what your child will be learning. GL~
