I am an adjunct college instructor, and I also work with the GED program. I have two ladies wanting to pursue their CNA certificate and they have asked if an employer requires them to have their GED before getting hired for a CNA position. I do know they can take classes at our community college (same college the GED prep program is through)while pursuing their GED. Their question is do they have to have a GED in order to get hired? Also, does anybody know the average hourly salary for this type of position in this area. I'm not from here and I know it was about 7-9 dollars per hour where I was from in S. Indiana. I know it probably isn't a lot, but they are looking to gain experience in the healthcare field for a nursing career later on.
Thanks for any info.

Additonal note: They do plan to earn their GED. They currently work full time in a factory and thought getting a CNA position while they pursue their GED would be a good move.

What can I do next?

I am a recruiter for a hospital system, and our job description reads high school diploma or equivalent (which means GED). Also in order to work in our hospitals, they need a CNA certification and must pass the Illinois CNA certification exam. Pay starts at $10.75. Computer experience is required too because we do online charting.

I am not for certain on wether GED is required for a CNA job, but it is required to take classes in nursing. I would advise them to get their GED no matter what. It puts them on a more even playing field with everyone else. If the employer is looking at potential hires, he puts the least education to the back of the pile...
