Eczema Solutions

This may not be the solution you are looking for, but here goes: my friend's son has asthma/eczema quite badly and giving a double dose of benadryl before bedtime has significantly decreased it. A triple-board certified pediatrician recommended it and she is ecstatic that finally, something worked!

My baby had that pretty bad when she was little. We used Head and shoulders shampoo. I used a small capful in the bath. Don't get it in the eyes though so try not to make the bath to deep. It's gone now and has not come back.

Is it 2 yr, old or the baby with the eczema? If it is the baby and he is on formula he may have a dairy allergy. My friends daughter was breastfeed and when she started with solids she broke out with baby food with dairy in it. He may have a severe dairy allergy. Food alleries will cause eczema. We went to an allergy doctor for my dughter. She doesn't have eczema but he asked about it and said foods can cause it. It may be worth it to take him to an allergy doctor and get tested.

Creams and lotions are fine, natural ones only. Steroidal creams will do damage to the bones. One week on a steroid, taken internally or a topical cream, does as much damage to bones as a woman going through menopause. Scary! I'm not anywhere near menopause and have horrible bone loss from steroids that doctors gave me as a child.

Also the laundry detergent is imperative. I found a company that I represent that has helped a multitude of people with skin issues. Their laundry detergent is better than the "baby" brands and their lotion has even gotten rid of Rosacia on a friend of mine's face. All this and they are cheaper than Wal-Mart. Call me, ###-###-####, or email me and I'll give you some details. My father's ezcema of 40 some odd years is completely gone.

Yes, there is a new product out there called Hylira. It is a lotion that is prescription only, so you'll have to get a doctor to prescribe it for you, but it's well worth it! It's a clear lotion that moisturizes from the inside out. Most lotions only stay on the top layer of skin and then get washed off as the day goes on, but this stuff penetrates deep down. My daughter, age 2, has had pretty severe eczema since around 2 months old. She grew out of a lot of it over the past year, but her hands and feet were still constantly dry, red and cracked, no matter what creams or lotions I used. Her pediatrician prescribed this right after it came out (a few months ago), and it worked like a charm! It made her skin so soft (and mine, too!). I would definitely recommend talking to your pediatrician about it. Good luck!

The best I have found is Vaseline Intensive care moisture lotion. Put it on everynight after a bath and pat dry after baths. In a week you will notice the change.

I just put the cream on my youngest every chance I get. When I take him to get a new diaper, we lotion up at the same time. They do grow out of it over time and it will get better, so just do what you're doing more often. Putting the lotion on is also like getting a mini massage for baby.

My son has eczema, it is how he reacts to his allergies....he is alergic to dogs, catsm dust mites... it is worth having a RAST blood test done, to find out if it is something that you can help prevent. He gets a bath almost nightly, but we rarely wash his skin with soap. He soaks for atleast 10 minutes to allow some moisture to get into the skin, then when he gets out we use an over the counter cream called Veni cream....and it works wonders! I'm glad that you are educated on steriod creams. We only use it when he is having a really bad outbreak, other wise I am just obsessive about putting lotion on him.....eczema caused because the skin can not make it's protective cover and can not keep moisture in...

You may want to go into the responses already posted in the archives on this website because there are many emails about that topic. I have that topic on my mind often but a lot less now - now that my son was tested for food allergies and tested positive for many many foods which actually caused some severe itching etc.... California Babies sold at Target and Health Food stores works and also the generic non soap liquid "soap" wash works like from Publix. Aveeno Fragrance Free lotion is good too. Google ecezma and see all of the information out there it's amazing!

Bag balm. My cousin's son had it and she tried everthing and Bag Balm worked for her son. It is OTC at most drug stores and is a salve like Vaseline. It was originally made for animals (I know, weird) but now it is used for a million reasons but people. Oprah has even talked about it. Might be worth a try!

my son has the same problem. His doctor prescribes him a cream made of Eucerin and 1% hydrocortisone,(hydrocort/theap moist cream)and I apply nightly after a bath. If I miss too many times, he has a break out.

I'm an esthetician and mother to a 1 year old who gets eczema/dermatitis quite often as well (as well as myself and alost every member of my family). For releif to him otameal baths work great or just even taking oatmel and putting on moist almost like mask wherever he gets and let dry this will penetrate best and soothing itching. What has helped me generally keep it away is using a cleanser called cetaphil (only thing that we've found to work well)and the lotion as well or eucerin lotion. On the cleanser store brand is okay but not the lotion because it contains mineral oil which will clog pores and just make matters worse. Also for outbreaks washing him with a dandruff shampoo called nizoral should really help but only when its there no more than 10 days at a time, leave it on for a minute then rinse and apply cortizone and for rest of body eucerin cream or cetaphil cream. You will probably see it alot more in wonter because of dryness so keep him moisterized. The key on clenaser and lotions for people with sensitive skin like that is to have a neutral ph level. From what I understand, eczema can result from food allergies. I have never had to try an elimination diet, but you might want to google it and give it a try. I know that one of the first things to eliminate from your diet is dairy.

My daughter had eczema for several years until her dermatologist told me to use the Avon Skin so Soft soaps and lotion. He told me that he wanted to see it dripping from her. I did as he said and for the past 4 years, she has had NO eczema at all.

See an allergist to figure out what food/item is causing the eczema.

I knwo you can give him an oatmeal bath. And there is also these wraps that you can wrap around the area. My firend daughter has eczema real bad. And I know she dose have altot of things that hepls out with the driness and the pain they go thoug. I will talk with her to see what else there is. But I do know of those two.

Have you tried food allergy testing?? I know it sounds out there, but I found out the CAUSE of my sons eczema (and some behavior problems) were his allergies/intolerance to gluten (wheat), Casein (Dairy), Soy, potatoes, egg, and peanuts. Once we got gluten and casein out of his diet, it almost completely cleared up! We recently discovered more, so we have started to eliminate those, and his skin looks wonderful! We found out Soy was triggering his behavior problems, and now he is a whole new kid....

Keep in mind that too much steroid creame can also make his sterile in the future, harm his growth, and how his muscles develop. I stopped using it as soon as I found that out.

As far as treating it short term, try limiting his baths and use burts bees oils on him and loose 100% cotton clothing. Then you might want to get him to a Alergist. My sons eczema flares up as a results of a milk alergy. As long as he avoids milk, he is fine. Sometimes culprits are chocolate, wheat, etc. but they can run some tests to see if he has any food or other allergies. Hope this helps. Good luck!

My daughter used to have eczema and we found out it was because of the DOGS in the house.

My son and daughter had it severely as did I. We use Grandpa's Pine Tar Soap. It is all natural, just 4 ingredients: Coconut oil, palm oil, pine tar oil, and vegetable glycerin. I buy it from the local health food store but you can also order it from the website.

find some 100% pure jojoba oil. and oil him up after every bath . it works wonders for any skin issues even eczema. good luck !

My son has eczema as well and for the last 11 years, we have used this cream named Cetaphil. IT IS IN A GREEN AND WHITE JAR. It helps alot but you must use daily especialLy after taking baths. I am sure this will help.

hello there! i have psoriasis and was freaked out about my daughter getting eczema, the earlier diagnosis as u know i'm sure. she is now six and my method is baby oil IN the bath tub and keep her lotioned up! that may be easier for a girl then a boy. also plenty of water never hurts. i only get the out breaks on my elbows and a few around the rest of my body. We had our daughter tested for allergies and she has none, but still gets bad eczema. At first it was on her face really bad and we do have various strengths of prescriptions, but I try to totally avoid those products. The products with pretroleum in them like aquafor seemed to irritate Sara's skin more. In the summer she had none! Since about Oct 1st, about when we stopped swimming everyday for hours on end, her body rashes have come back bad. We try to keep her rubbed up with Cetaphil. It's so cute when she sits and rubs it on her legs and stuff and she's not even 2, but knows it helps with the itching.

My baby has eczema too. My ped said to wash with Dove unscented soap and rinse her with Keri bath oil. Then lotion her skin while it's still wet. I found that Nivea Extra Enriched lotion is really good, it has vitamin E. Her ped also prescribed a hydrocort. cream, but I never use it.

This can be allergy related. Have you tried taking dairy out of his diet? Talk to your doctor about milk replacements, such as soy. Other common allergies are wheat, eggs, and strawberries. I might see a specialist if I were you.

I noticed lots of good advice on creams and checking for allergies. One other allergy to check for doesn't always have obvious symptoms. That's a wheat or gluten allergy. It's far more common than people realize. Make sure you rule that out, too.
