Eczema in Toddler

I really need some advice. My 5 1/2 year old has had eczema since he was a baby...however, I've tried EVERY single lotion, cream you name it, we've tried it and nothing seems to help. He doesn't just have eczema in certain spots either, it's pretty much all over and it's not rash like, it's just really rough skin. When I rub him down with the lotions, he looks like he is going to fall asleep because he's so relieved for 5 minutes then he starts itching again. I really just hate seeing him have to feel this way all the time. Is there anything more I can do??

What can I do next?

I mix my own cream and apply it after wetting the skin down
Use equal parts
vaseline
zinc oxide cream (just use 40 percent zinc diaper cream)
benedryl anti itch cream
1 percent hydrocortizone cream

Do not bathe in really hot water...and try to cut down on the number of baths, this dries out the skin and makes the condition worse. Excema is allergy related but I it's hard to isolate and remove all the allergens. Stress seems to make it worse too.

My daughter is 5 and 1/2 and also has had this since she was a baby. Not bad anymore, but when it was the same thing would happen with her
(side note- once we stopped the lotion -she got bettter- if you're going to do a lotion get a very organic lotion with little ingredients- i used to drive the hour to whole foods when it was really bad)

1. get him tested for allergies, its likely he's allergic to something causing this
2. get a very sensitive organic soap or cetaphil like people say-don't let him sit in the soapy water- if he's going to take a bath let him do the soap in the begining and rinse it down before bath, or at the end, if they sit in the water with soap its worse
3. make sure the water isn't to hot
4. put sunblock on year round- the wind can do the same as sun
does he have a stuffy nose a lot too?

Allergy testing, blood test (IgE) to rule in or rule out. I work for a national testing lab and spent two hours today talking about pediatric allergies, asthma and eczema. Food and environmental in a single blood test. Good luck.

This is my sons' story years ago. He has healthy, beautiful skin ever since we did away with the expensive prescriptions, lotions and cleansers containing petroleum based products. Those kinds of "crude" oils sit on top of skin acting like a barrier and dont allow skin to heal. Try this for a week and see the difference. Hope it helps your little one.

We just took my little guy to a dermatologist here is what we left with

cetaphil
cerva

use daily-when using moisturizer use lotions first then creams then ointments on top.

bleach baths-bathing is actually good, it rehydrates the skin, use lots of lotion after and 1 cup of bleach to a tub of water. (i haven't tried this because it sounds crazy, but it's exactly what they told me to do)

also if you use a steroid cream only use it for 2 weeks and then stop for a week.

We tried EVERYTHING with our oldest son, who is now 7, and only OCCASSIONALLY has outbreaks. We finally eliminated the skin "offenders" and stopped using OTC creams, prescription remedies, and stopped using disposable diapers. Switched to cloth diapers, used coconut oil in his baths and used topically(which helps TREMENDOUSLY), and also restricted his diet (no chocolate, very little sugar, absolutely no caffeine, and limited citrus - the acid seemed to be a culprit as well AND we became vegetarian). It took a few years for us to realize the solution for him. I hope this helps you!

We get it mildly and my friend's son more strongly.
This is what she told me:
1. lots of moisturizer -- every 2 hours.
2. zinc cream
3. sunblock with zinc cream
4. bath as little as possible
5. no soap
6. cetaphil or bath oil if necessary to bathe

you are not alone. many children have it, but parents think it is rash or allergy....

Have you tried coconut oil (pure/virgin) and soap from goatmilkstuff.com? You may want to give that a shot. I am so sorry.... that sounds terrible.

We had to go to the dermatologist for my two boys, and we use steroid cream for the flare-ups, which isn't good for long-term, but helps enormously. We use Cerave cream (regular over the counter cream) for general moisturizing. Their skin is getting better with the increasing humidity.
Good luck!

This sounds like my son years ago; we used a cream containing Zinc. I'm sorry I don't remember the name of it but check the list of ingredients; or it will probably be on the front of the label as a selling point. It worked wonders for my son.

Good luck!!

My son has Eczema. My M. sells pure natural oils and I just recently started puting 6 - 8 drops of lavendar oil in his bath. That is really helping! I also use Frankincense Oil (which costs a little more). I am going to try to dilute and mix these 2 oils together with water and salt (I forget which kind of salt) and put it in a spray bottle. I don't like using the steroid cream and the oils are all natural (not man-made). The answers were very good and I've been meaning to take my 5 year old to see an allergist.
