Help! My 7 year old has had eczema since she was an infant. We had hoped she would grow out of it but it seems to be getting worse. We've seen an allergist several times now who thinks the eczema is triggered by numerous indoor allergens. I'm doing the best I can to control the dust. We're ripping out all our carpet now and laying wood floors hoping that will help. She is taking Singulair, Zyrtec, we hydrate her skin 2x a day and use Aquaphor 2x a day, we use a non-steroid ointment in the mornings and a steroid cream in the evenings. We limit her baths to a few minutes a couple of times a week. I wash her clothes separately and use an extra rinse cycle to get all the soap out. She is completely miserable and finding no relief. She itches all the time and has trouble sleeping at night. Does anyone have any experience with this? I'm at my wits end and don't know what to do. I haven't tried seeing a dermatologist and don't know if it would even help. Don't know if I should try another allergist or if there's anything else we can do besides what we're already doing. I would appreciate any words of wisdom.
Thanks for everyone's help. I actually got the name of a good dermatologist from my pediatrician. I also started using lotion, soaps, and detergent from Melaleuca. The sitter that keeps my baby ordered it for me and it has worked miracles. I'm so impressed and my daughter's skin looks 100% better. It is so smooth you would never know she had eczema. We've been able to stop using both of the ointment and steriod creams. I just have my sitter order for me whenever she orders for herself. Thanks again for all the help!

I'm a mother of twin boys and one has severe food and skin allergies. He has a real bad case of eczema as well. I just took him to a pediactric dermatologist and my son finally rested last night without itching. She gave me a Cleanser & cream called Cerave. She also gave me a prescription called desonide. I wash all clothes in Dreft and keep him away from animals. The eczema can be triggered from foods, to heat, animale, perfumes, cleaning products. There are allergy safe cleaning products that you might want to look into. I feel for you because I know what you are going through. Try going to a pediactric dermatologist. We are in Dallas Texas and our Doctor name is Robin Carder. I wish you the best and I hope this is helpful.

Hi L.,
I feel your pain. Have you tried any of the Arbonne baby products? Both of my children have eczema and NOTHING was working. It's horrible to see your child in pain. I was very close to having them both put on allergy medicine until my neighbor introduced me to the Arbonne baby care line--it doesn't have any mineral oil, is botanically-based and hypo-allergenic, and doesn't contain any dyes or chemical fragrances. Basically, I bathe both my children in the Hair and Body wash, and then on the affected areas, I apply the baby oil, let it soak in, and then apply the lotion on their entire bodies. Once the problem areas clear up, I continue to use the body wash and lotion. I noticed a difference in 2-3 days. I have been using the Arbonne products on my children for over a year now and am still happy with the outcome, and my children aren't miserable anymore! I had a friend also use the products on her son and had WONDERFUL luck, too. Her son was on cortizone and was so miserable that he would scratch his body on the carpet to get relief. Once she tried the Arbonne products, he was able to stop using cortizone and his eczema cleared up! If you would like to try the products, I'd be happy to share them with you. I know how it is to have tons of lotions and potions on hand that don't work! This way, you can try the products and if they work for your daughter, great, if not, you can give them back to me with absolutely no obligation. I do have an ingredients list if you'd like to see what is in the products.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Good luck in finding what's best for your daughter!
Sincerely,
Jacqueline

L., I know you have received many responses and I hope one of them will work but I just thought I would recommend a product I have found in Canton (First Mondays). I'm not sure where else it is sold but I have their information if you want it. It is an all natural product and it is called Bee's Wax. It is NOT a Burt's Bee's product. My almost 3 year old daughter has Eczema and it works really well on her. When I start feeling the little bumps come up I apply it and it is gone within a day or two. My daughter however is Autistic and has sensory issues so luckily I guess she doens't seem to feel hers as much and doesn't scratch it, so that helps. My husband and I both use it too on mosquito bites and other rashes and it takes the itch right out. If you are interested in trying the product email me directly @ ____@____.com and I will find their website/phone#/info... M., mom to Melody

I would really encourage you to look into chemical allergies/sensitivities. All 3 of my boys have severe eczema (constant scratching and bleeding all over their bodies) and my twins had their first asthma attacks before they turned 2. We knew something was causing their problems but we just didn't know what it was. I thought for sure it was some sort of food allergy, pollen, or pet dander. Well, when they were about 1 1/2, we found an allergist that would test them and absolutely nothing came up on the tests. Nothing. We were perplexed to say the least. They had maxed out on the steroid cream dosage they could have at their age. Elidel and protopic didn't help at all. Trimincinclone (sp?)helped keep it in check if we applied it 5-6 times a day.
When they were 2 1/2, a year after their allergy testing, I came across some information & studies regarding certain preservatives and chemicals commonly used in cleaning, laundry, and bath & body products being major triggers for skin and breathing problems. I just didn't know if using products without formaldehyde, ammonia, bleach, or phosphates would help but I was willing to try. Three weeks after we switched products, THEIR SKIN WAS CLEAR!!! And....my twins haven't had an asthma attack in almost a year. :)
None of the doctors we saw (pediatrician, dermatologist, allergist) thought that chemical sensitivities might be a trigger for their skin and breathing issues. My twins had been suffering since they developed severe cradle cap when they were about 2 1/2 months old. Two and a half years later, the mystery was solved!!!
Please email me at ____@____.com and I would be happy to fill you in on what we are using that has helped so much!

I am so sorry to hear that your daughter is going through this. My daughter was born with eczema and luckily for us, it has gotten better as she has grown up. She is 12 now and the worst spots are her feet. I have used products you mentioned and I have no other great products to recommend.
We were also told this is an allergy that would most likely be outgrown. When she steps in the grass her feet act up but when we go to the beach, she clears up perfectly.
One thing she does like and finds soothing is pink calamine lotion. When her feet are acting up, she will use that and sleep with socks on. It does not make it go away, it just helps with itching.
Good luck to you,

Hi L.. My son (months old) also has SEVERE eczema. I go through the same daily routine of zyrtec, steroid and non steroid creams, eucerine and aquaphor. Its a nightmare and he still wakes in the night rubbing his legs together like a cricket from the itchiness. My poor angel even cracks and bleeds on his knees and ankles during severe flair ups. What I'm saying is, I feel your pain. I have recently made an appointment with a pediatric dermatologist who was reccomended by my pediatrician, Dr Galli of Grapevine. He is supposed to be very experienced in this area. My ped thinks that my sons problem is truely skin related and that allergens are not the issue. However, he does contract viral skin issues from time to time as well, so I think the dermatologist is the way to go. Glad to hear that there's another mom out there pulling her hair out. Let me know if you discover a miracle cream or cure!

The chiropractor really helped and luckily for me I didn't have to go to many specialist to find this out. It clears it up completely as long as I remove the trigger from their environment. I did change their detergent that I wash their clothes, the soap I bathe them with and use organic foods. They do still drink milk but I am trying to remove that as well. I have an Invitation store and I sell this product. If you are interested My store is K Printing Co. Hillsboro, Tx. ###-###-####. The small jar runs $13. plus tax. I have had eczema for about 10yrs now, I am now 29. I get it on my stomach where the metal buttons hit me. It is usually worse when summer starts and then when winter starts. No idea why. One of the moms suggested going in the sun and that has helped mine alot. I know she is to young but in high school I would go to a tanning salon and that helped clear it up. Also when it does flair up I put clear nail polish on all the metal buttons inside my pants. My son also has/had it and I used hydrocortisone cream that his pediatrician gave him. His is cleared up now, every once in a while it will flare. I hope your daughter gets some release, I would try the benadryl to so she can sleep.

Aveeno oatmeal baths help my son.
I would pursue food allergy testing. My son's eczema greatly diminished after we discovered his multiple food allergies. At least check it out so you can rule foods out.
Our experience with a pediatric dermatologist was that "kids just get eczema sometimes and that we don't know what causes it." My pediatric allergist took one look at my son and said that she thinks he may have food allergies. Sure enough, we tested and he is allergic to soy, peanuts, tree nuts, and wheat (along with every tree, flower, weed, mold, dust, pet allergy possible).
Good luck to you and your daughter. I know it is very frustrating and heart breaking for you.
P.S. I also have been married 10 years, and I am a teacher that enjoys being a stay at home mommy during the summer.

My daughter also suffers eczema, and she has periods of bad flare-ups. I found out that, the product line, Aveno makes a liquid bath soap and lotion with menthol in it, which helps cool the burning itch. It really helps my daughter to stop scratching. Also, I did see a dermatologist that prescribed a stronger hydrocortisone lotion(than the one OTC)which stops the itching, I only use this one if we are away from home.

Hi L. -
I feel your pain!! My son has horrible eczema. We, too, are at our wits end. Locoid steroid cream helps the eczema on his legs and arms a LITTLE, if we apply it 2xday every single day. But, as soon as we give his skin a break, it pops back up. We also slather Cetaphil on him 2xday. I think this helps a bit. I have also tried Elidel, which really helped, when applied generously, which we were told not to do. I also researched it on the web, and the cancer risk scared me to death. The patches on his ankle area are so rough and bleed. I feel so sorry for him. We saw a pediatric dermatologist (supposedly one of the best)hoping to find some answers. They told us to use steroid cream, and they don't know what causes it. He also had allergy testing, at my pedi's request. He didn't have any allergies. I wish I had something great to recommend, but I don't. PLEASE let me know if you find anything. Good luck

The dermatologist gave me DESONIDE in the beginning, but now just MIMYX cream and that seems to be working very well for us. Good luck

HI L......I have had eczema since I was 2 and I am 28 now. I actually have the worst case my doctors have ever seen. I have it to the point that I scratch TO DEATH every night and don't seem to wake up, then the next day it hurts like hell. I know that stress is a BIG culprit and you might not think that is an issue since she is only 7 but for me it was. My parents were divorced and I would scratch constantly when I would be waiting for my dad to pick me up or if I was in trouble...worried about school...people picking on me for having the eczema all that. I also was allergic to everything such as eggs and milk and tomatoes and switched to a very bland diet of the plane rice cakes and juice (that was back in the day when the rice cakes tasted like cardboard) That still didn't help. I use desonoide on my face and triamcinilone on my body. I still have it pretty bad but it can and does get alot worse if I stress about anything. The sun helps alot but I am trying to keep my baby out of it so I don't get to lay out in it very often. I just started trying the arbonne baby line and noticed when I put the oil and lotion on I would not itch my arm.....then a few hours later I would itch again....I think I might just need to use it more often. Just so you know even if she has a bath for a few minutes it burns like hell. As soon as water hits your scratches it is pure torture. I would only give her a bath with the Aveeno oatmeal bath for sensative skin. That seems to take the sting out. You can also try putting a barrier on the sores with vasaline or an ointment lathered on. I would take her to a dermatologist asap they should be able to give you something so she can get some relief. I hope this helps and if you have any other questions I am always here to help!!!

I would suggest seeing another allergist. My neice has severe eczema and has a variety of ointments, etc and special solutions she bathes in. I don't know what all of them are, but they help a lot. She is allergic to most outdoor things, grass, sand, pollens, chlorine, etc, and a whole list of indoor things. She was getting allergy shots for a while which helped even more, but they have temporarily stopped due to insurance changes. I can find out more specific names of the products she uses (all prescription) if you want. But I would start with a second opinion from a different allergist. My sister lives in Houston and her allergist said that my neice is one of the worst childhood cases of eczema he has seen. He does not think she will outgrow, but her eczema is under control.

Have you looked into food allergies as well? Our daughter has eczema that flairs up following various foods, including dairy.
Just to add to my initial response mentioning dairy, I saw additional items that trigger flair ups for our daughter being mentioned in other moms' responses so I thought I would go back and add this list of triggers to my posting so you can more easily see the common threads. She will also get black circles under her eyes if she's having a bad reaction.
Dairy
Red Food Dyes
Citrus
Red Foods (Tomatoes, Strawberries - don't know if that is because of acidic nature or the color)
Soy (initially tried soy milk to replace dairy and it did not work - she drinks rice milk now and that works well)
Fragrances/Chemicals (detergents, fabric softeners, bath soaps, sunscreens, insect repellants - anything that goes on her skin - we use all dye and fragrance "free" products)
Heat
Fatigue and Emotional Stress (she tends to have more symptoms if she's had a bad day or gets upset)
Of course we keep her away from things like face painting as much as possible, although she does like to be a kid and do this from time to time. We always ask face painters about their paint. Some true professional artists use better products that are specially formulated to be mild on the skin. We try to steer away from budget face painting and red face paint, to be on the safe side :)
She is 7 now and her symptoms get better every year. We found that children's Benadryl provides her with some relief, and she prefers the melt-aways. She used to take it regularly but now she takes it pretty infrequently (around once per month). Other than that, if we control her environment (especially the dairy) she does pretty well.

My daughter has had eczema since birth mostly in the spots each time (face, arms, and sides). We dont have anything close to the problem that you are having. But here are some things that have helped us. Although we are still battling it! We are still trying to find out what is causing her flair ups as well.
*We wash her clothes seperate
*We use Drift soap and on the extra Spin cycle to make sure all the soap is out.
*Bath time use luke warm water.
*Bath soap we use Cetaphil or Johnson's and Johnsons hypoallergetic formula.
*Change air filters every month
*Vacume and dust every week
*Lotion her throughout the day
*Food wise we try to go Organic or control the intake of food with hormones or preservitives she eats.
* She is on a Lactose Free diet as well.
*She is on Zyrtec as well (she has Allergy Shiners) not sure what she is allergic to yet.
Her Ped Dermatolist is Dr Fred Ghali ###-###-#### (Grapevine)
He put her on Alclometasone Dipropionate Cream 0.05% (Steroid cream). I would try taking her to the Dermatologist and see if he can help...wouldnt hurt.
You have done a great job! I know it is frustrating...good luck.

We have changed all of our cleaning and laundry products over to Melaleuca but have used the Arbonne Baby Care and Rejeuvinating Cream faithfully and not had any more problems. I have seen a drastic improvement in the "itchies" over the past few years - especially during the summer. Let me know if you have any questions...
've read all the responds, and boy is that alot to take in...
First, I feel for your daughter. I'm sorry she can't find relief. It sounds like you are trying your best and going above and beyond. You're a great mother!
Lynn's response is the only thing that worked for me as well. My son and I got into a routine. I also tried several different kinds of soaps and lotions. Some made it worst and some didn't work at all.
1. Bath (Cetaphil soap) 2. Pat dry 3. Lotion with thick cream lotion (Cetaphil- not the pump). The only difference I did is it put petroleum jelly on the areas that were really bothering him. The places where he would scratch alot were red and irritated, I was afraid lotion would sting it and found out Vaseline heals his skin while he sleeps. I made sure I found him cotton t-shits without tags. We have had his eczema under control for three years now but if I don't do the routine for more then two days, it comes back.
Good luck L.,

I have two sons with eczema and I discovered after eating certain foods they would break out like tomatoes, tomato sauce of any kind and citrus like lemon or lime and strawberries. Once we stopped those they seem not to have any. Allergies are almost always associated with eczema so the best way to help is to eliminate and figure out what is going on. I agree with the other mom about trying natural cleaning products and laundry detergent. I also use Canus Goat's Milk soap to bathe them. You can get it from Amazon. I hope all goes well!!

Just a note and everyone that suffers from allergies has their own what works and what does not. My best friends daughter suffers from this as well. Her Doctor at the time told her to get rid of the carpet so she put wood floors in. Huge mistake! Symptoms got worse not better. She went to a new doctor that told her dust is in carpet but when you have carpet it is compacted. With wood floors dust is free and flies constantly. Unless you are willing to clean wood floors several times daily everything that carpet traps will be flying all the time. That was their experience but like I said each person is diferent.

I so feel your pain. I have an 8 year old and he has been through the same exact thing. This summer is the first time he has been without any major break outs. The way to get it under control is to ask the doctor for a script of prednisone. This is an oral steriod. Yes they will tell you that repeated use can thin the bones but it is the only thing that works when my little boy has a really bad breakout. I have been to the dermitologist with him and that is what they gave us along with bactroban ointment. This is a antibiotic cream that will heal when she has scratched until it is infected. I also found a home made soap from a store in Millsap, TX that is made of olive oil and oatmeal and that is the only thing we use now. It seemed to help when I would give him a shower instead of a bath. Please feel free to call me on my cell ###-###-####, my name is M. Lee. I would be happy to send you a bar of soap, we bought about 20 last time. I understand your frustrations. Oh by the way, benedryl can be given every night without any long term negative effects, it helps. I was starting to give up hope that he would outgrow this but this summer has been a turning point. The doctor did say that stress and emotional stuff can cause a breakout.

I have eczema and I have read some information about whole foods and natural resources. I found out that formaldahyde is probably in the detergent soap and the rinse that you're using. That is why your child is probably still itching. I would first read up some information at the Whole Food store in a book by Phyllis A. Balch,CNC called Nutritional Healing 4th Edition. There are detergents that have no artificial coloring and dyes that are available at Whole Food stores across the nation. If there are ingredients in anything you are feeding your child or in contact with their skin that you cannot pronounce, it chemically processed.
You also may want to consider the air vents for those who have allergies. It's great that you are taking out the carpet.
I would visit a pediatrician or someone that specializes in natural healing. Ask the doctors office if they have a patient that is please with their service that can give you their recommendation as well.
Have you tried oatmeal in your child's bath? I was recommended this by one of my dermatologist.
Lastly, your child could be allergic to certain foods and will need an allergy test.

This may be something you have tried already, but my nephew had the same problem since he was an infant. He had terrible
eczema all over his body, my sister heard from someone who had this experience that he may be allergic to dairy products, they started him on soy products and it was a drastic change, he is a 15 months now and has no signs of it unless he comes into contact with dairy. When she was breastfeeding she had to remove all dairy from her diet and even had to stop the coffe creamer she was using. It seems like something simple but her pediatrician had never mentioned this as the cause. Don't know if you have tried it but if not I've heard it's alot more common than we would think. My daughter has eczema, and the heat really inflames it. Make sure her room is very cool at night, and limit her outdoor time so she doesn't get too hot. Is the steroid cream you use called Locoid? We use that and it helps. We leave it in the refrigerator because it feels good on her skin when it's cold. Also, try using an all natural cleaning product to clean the tub and shower. She could be allergic to your tap water as well. I will pray for her and hope you find an answer for her.

Hi L.,
Not sure if this would help--maybe try going the natural way..meaning buying shampoo, detergent, lotion, etc from whole foods or healthy approach..both stores should have knowledgable staff that can help you pick out products that will deal with eczema..
Both my daughter and I suffer from eczema on occasion..when using products I try to use as natural and clean as possible..So far, it's working. Even some of the detergents that say "clean" or "dye free" still contains chemicals that can irritate the skin.
Good luck,
BB

I had the same problem as an infant and young child. I had eczema so bad that I would bleed from itching while I was asleep. It was all over my body. My mother took me to a homeopathic doctor and that helped a great deal. I had many allergies just like your daughter. The homeopathic med helps your body to be more receptive of the allergens. There are many homeopathic (I think I am spelling that correctly) in the Dallas area, I went to a doc. in Houston so I can't recommend one here, but the homeopathic meds are now FDA approved and you can get them at most health food stores, but I would recommend seeing a homeopathic specialist if your daughter's case was similar to mine. My eczema went from horrible to just mild in only a few months. My mom also took me off milk products for a while and this also helped as it was one of my worst allergies. Now that I am an adult I still have a few bad break out a year depending on the pollen counts and other allergies, but I use a spray that helps me a lot with occasional break outs Derma-Zinc. I think is also comes in a cream. Hope this helps.

hi L....
my name is Y. i have a 2yr old boy who suffers from eczema as well since he was born :0(, as u i took him 2 like 4 specialist to see if they could do something about about it but in my cause was unhelful, i had tried everything.... what i started doing a couple of months ago was giving him a bath just onces a day ( very fast) and with the anti allergy soap from baby johnsons, after the bath applied ,"Vit A 10,000 I.U. daily ", also since i started with "Evening primrose" topically to the affected skin twice a day, lactose free product"dairy products "( that made me think that he was also allergic to food not just ezcema)had she been treated for any food allergies before? my son its doing much better thanks god, i hope it works for her....
**** many doctors told me that the key was the bath time***** its has to be very quick and not 2 much soap, i know kids luvs taking bath and ect but i have noticed that since i cut his bath time its getting better. There's a great deal of evidence that people with eczema have a problem with their digestion of essential fatty acids!also try 2 use cotton cloth as much as u can!

I would highly recommend getting a second opinion. Eczema is a serious matter. Especially for a child her age, in school, it's so hard to think about what other children may say to her. I don't know which Physician you have been seeing, but I know that the Dr's at Southwest Allergy & Asthma Center (6101 Windcom Court Suite 400 Plano, TX 75093 Office ###-###-#### www.southwestallergy.com)...are GREAT! There are 3 physicians in the practice and I would highly Recommend ALL of them. I would have her tested and evaluated. There are other alternatives...not just medication. And, yes...ripping up your carpet really will help.

My 22 month old son has eczema and a peanut allergy. He is also on Zyrtec. I have tried the steroid creams and everything. The only thing I have found to help so far is this routine:
Bath and pat dry
Apply Hydrocortisone 1% on all areas like a lotion
Apply a thick layer of Aquaphor on all areas after Hydrocortisone
Dress in cotton pajamas
After ONE application of this, he had gotten better... now I do it as a routine and the eczema is pretty much gone! Of course, it comes back if I don't keep up the routine...
