Eczema? - Long Beach, CA

Hey moms and eczema experts, I need advice before I have to pay for a doctor visit. My 14 month old daughter has developed tiny, little red bumps on her face but only around her nose, under her eyes, and a little in the crease of her chin. It started a few weeks ago but is becoming worse. Because she's fair skin, it looks like she has a shiner under each eye. The bumps almost look like the ones I get on my fingers each winter and I know that that is eczema as I'm treated for it each dry/cold season. If this is eczema, why just in these select areas? Also, I'm reading a lot about dairy being the culprit. She weened herself 7 weeks ago from breast feeding and has had organic cow milk in her cereal 2X a day. We're vegetarian so if I have to rule out dairy/eggs/soy, I will be challenged to say the least. Anyway, any first hand advice will be greatly appreciated. Right now I'm just using a little Aveeno cortisone on her and some Aquaphor to seal that in at bedtime. I use only Dreft laundry and J&J baby products but again it's only in a few select areas on her face and nowhere on her body so my gut tells me it's not from external sources. Please advise. Best, M.

So What Happened?

Thanks moms for the wealth of info on eczema and other skin conditions. Unfortunately the doctor said it's not eczema but some form of dermatitis and didn't really offer solutions. I never use chemicals in my home, clean entirely with mild dish soap and vinegar. I do use some J&J products on her but never on her face, only her body and her body has never had a bump or blemish. I've switched to unscented organic products and am continuing to use Aveeno Oatmeal moisturizer on her and it helps a little but each day she wakes up with new little bumps although they clear up throughout the day. Weird, huh? I appreciate all of your responses. Thanks again.

Both my son & I have extremely sensitive skin & he gets severe eczema. My mom had bought me some homemade lotion at a dayspa in Idaho a few years ago & I found another jar when she was moving. I used it on my son beginning a few weeks ago & I'm not kidding the eczema dissappeared. I just called the lady last week, who made it, to order more. It is $15 per jar & I ordered 8 jars. Nothing has worked on him so far, but this stuff worked like a miracle.

It is called Grandma M's Homemade Lotion. The owner (Christina) was thinking of not staying in business so she shut down her website, but she has been getting calls from people who have used her stuff begging her not to quit. She is in Idaho. Her number is ###-###-####.

Good Luck!

Hi M.,
I don't want to toot my own horn (well actually my companies horn) but Melaleuca carries a lotion called "renew lotion" It's made with Melaleuca oil (tea tree oil) and I can't tell you how many customers have said it completely erased any signs of their Eczema. They also carry laundry detergeants and other products made from Melaleuca that you may want to look into that could also be affecting your daughters (and yours) skin. Visit my website if you want more info www.workathomeunited.com/allergyfree and www.melaleuca.com
Hope this helps!

my 18 month old daughter only breaks out on her cheeks and my twin nephews break out on their face backs wrist and ankles. food allergy could be the issue. try taking out the organic milk and see if it goes away. also it could be an outside allergy (pollen, pet dander, etc.). my daughter has indoor/outdoor allergies, asthma, and eczema (these tend to run in 3s). what my daughters dr reccamends is not bathing them everyday (unless its needed), using creams not lotions (like the aquaphor, i love baby aveeno), and 1/2 tsp of childrens benadryl (to keep them from irritating the areas more from itching, this will make them drowsy). you seem to be doing the right things so far so keep it up! good luck!

My little man has eczema on his back, but it's patchy. I get it just on my left under arm and on my upper thigh, usually when the weather changes or I change my diet and don't drink enough water or stay hydrated.

My son's got really bad, and we had to go with a straight cortisone cream, not ointment because it made it worse. I agree with the first post, try eliminating the dairy if you can for now. My son is also lactose intolerant, so being vegetarian wasn't an option for us becuase of the lack of dairy in his diet.

It soundds like you're doing all you can, and working to make your little lady comfy. Instead of trekking to the doc's office, try calling and talking to the office nurse if you're still concerned about it. I do that instead of driving down there, if they can give me the advice over the phone it's faster and effective.

For my son, I now use Target Brand Cortisone, and J&J Lotion (the pink one) right after bath time on his back and during the winter Eurcerin Calming Cream. For some reason, ointment makes the bumps bigger...

Good luck!

Hi M.:
: ) I'm sorry to hear about your darlin girl. The first thing, that came to me,after reading your request,was...Ok what did you change two weeks ago? How about eleminating one thing at a time, and see what reaction you get?If i were you, I'd begin with either the soy or organic cow milk. just try taking one away for a week. If you see an improvement, you know you've hit the problem. Heck, thats what the Dr. is going to do.Charge you an arm and a leg, and tell you to begin testing at home by (eleminating)I wish you and your sweet girl the best. I hope things clear up soon.

Cortisone creams thin the skin (so I am told by a good source) so you might want to stop using that. The elimination thing is first, it might take a while to work through all those trials but hang in there. I realize there is a thing against goat milk these days but when my twins were born preemie one of them had breast milk jaundice and I fed him goat milk. So that is up to you for the protien thing. Change her pillow every day and see if that helps.

I've done a fair amount of research and from what I have read the number one culprit is dust mites. She is probably a lot more active now, getting into everything. You are probably just going to have to be extra diligent on your dusting and vacuuming (while she's not in the room). Wash all her linens in hot water every week. The cortisone and aquafore are great. You could also use the Eucrin Calming Cream, it has worked very well on the little girl I babysit.
Good luck!

Hi M.,

My son suffered from eczema and "contact dermatitis". He was very allergic to caustic ingredients, including most laundry detergents and a cheap preservative called Quaternium-15. Sadly, it is in most J&J baby products and many other popular names out there. So please check your bottles and if your product has it in it....please stop using it! You can check out this website to see what types of products have it. There are even pics to show you what it can do to the skin, it may be just what your daughter has.
http://dermnetnz.org/dermatitis/quaternium-allergy.html

I was also introduced to Melaleuca ~ The Wellness Company, and I can honestly say that a combination of their products have help clear up my son's skin condition with in about 6-7 weeks. Completely gone! We had suffered through cortizone creams (steroids) presciption ointments and I just didn't feel comfortable putting strong oinments on his baby skin. I tried a lot of OTC lotions too.

I've learned so much! Our skin is like a sponge, so anything it comes in contact with can cause "contact dermatitis" in some individuals. Including laundry detergents, shampoos, body wash, lotion, perfume, cleaning supplies and floor cleaners that your baby may walk or crawl around. I was able to replace all these types of items and more with Melaleuca.

I hope your daughter heals quickly and I'm sure the products can help you with your winter eczema.

Talk to any of the other Mom's that have recommended this product line or feel free to visit this website:

www.SaferIsBetter.com/LisaZ and you can even get some free products when you order, I did!!

:) Hope this is helpful information for you!

Hi M. :)

Listen to your gut. That would be my first bit of advice. Children speak to us in many different ways. If you are getting this dairy info, she may be sending you a message that your higher self is receiving. Never rationalize your instincts. Just go with them!

Now, I took my daughter off all dairy from the cow, anything with yeast, wheat, refined sugars, and dye. She was suffering from horrible eczema- scratching open itchy scabs... the head of her school thought she had MRSA at one point :\. She was diagnosed with asthma and she has allergies... severe ones to peanuts. IF your daughter has eczema, she may develop asthma and allergies as well, so just keep your eye out for that. I would have her allergy tested (when she's older- it hurts). With the asthma, my daughter never had an audible wheeze; she coughed a lot, so I thought she was always getting sick (I had no prior experience with asthma). So, getting back to your question about the eczema, in my changing the dairy, I replaced with rice products. Rice dream has milk- flavored, too. They have noodles... all kinds of things. It seems as if every other child these days has super sensitivities to what we grew up eating. I don't question it as the children that are being born these days are smarter and more in tune. Let us all as parents learn from them. If they can't eat certain foods, then know that they are bad for us. Too many children suffer from the same stuff nowadays. There has to be something to that. Your daughter also has to adjust to these foods, but 7 weeks seems like that would have happened already.

In response to treating the eczema question, I can help you with that if you would like to contact me personally. I have read every response I've seen about children suffering from this. There was one area of responses in particular that stood out and I tried it and it works! My daughter was just beginning to suffer the constant itching thing and I started treating her again and she hasn't complained since. This stuff is a God-send, especially since every medicine we tried did hardly anything except hurt her and burn. This stuff I've been using is natural and a blessing! If you would like more info, message me :) I would try this stuff first before anything the doctor gives. I've got a medicine cabinet filled with expensive creams that are worthless (from her ped as well as from dermatologists. I wish I knew about this stuff I now use, before, when all of this started with her. I would have saved tons of money and she wouldn't have been in all that pain and had all the irritation. Also, don't use Benadryl on the area constantly because that can permanently change the texture of her skin. The cortisone won't :).

I hope you find something soon that helps her. :)

All my best,
J.

Someone introduced a product to me, someone in the networking business, which by the way, you don't have to be a member of. It worked on my daugher's eczema, my friend's psoriasis, and my co-worker who has the worst eczema I have ever seen, her entire body was covered with rashes and her face was swollen. It worked on them, it can work for your daughter too. ____@____.com
