Hello L.,
My almost 2 year old had this several months ago. We were trying a lot of things. Changing soap, foods etc... The back of her arms were covered and the back of her legs and knees were really bad. Almost raw. I was told to use Aveeno soothing wash and cream lotion. I stopped using anything else but those 2 things and it has cleared up completely. She takes a bath every night and I apply the wash and after I apply the cream. I also switched to using only baby laundy soap on her clothes. (just in case). Hope you find a solution that works for him.

We've had several family members that suffer with this. Here is what my daughter and sis in law do for their lil ones: Since water is a source of irritation they only get bathed every other day. After bathtime and daily they get hydrocortisone on the eczema, then on top of that they get a thick layer Aquaphor. This seems to keep it in check really well.
Hope that helps,
Steph

Well, I'm going to give you some different advice. I would eliminate dairy products for 1 or 2 weeks to see if that helps. There is a direct link between food allergies and eczema, dairy being #1. If you eliminate dairy and there is no change, you can introduce it back in and try another high allergen food (soy, wheat, eggs, etc) and instead of just treating the symptoms you can stop what's CAUSING it. L. I feel your pain on this one,But I have sometings that will help.My son has had this since he was a baby he is four now and my daughter who is two has it as well around her daiper area and it gets bad with no air and the wetness.
Anyways you can go to the doctor and get this cream that works and is not expensive (Diprolene AF 5% OR Mycolog 2) you use it twice a day they have off brand just ask for it. The other thing I found that is at the store was the Sauve Naturals Lotion with Oatmeal helps alot.I used this on my son one time because I forgot the lotion we normally use this was all my mother had and you really need to keep the lotion on because when the skin gets dry it is worse then. This is now all I use on my son. Also if your grandson takes baths I would say tell him to wash and then put water in the tub to play.(If they play in the bath at that age still). Also no bubble baths I found that just sitting in all that junk brakes it out alot more.Rince off really really well with everything and watch the laudry soap too.
Also I would change your bath soap too we use Johnson Johnson calming lavender soap everything else brakes it out bad.
I hope you can get yours to settle down it will not go away but it should get better.
Best of Luck M.

I use Renew by Melaleuca on my daughter and son. I also am currently using their laundry detergent, fabric softener, and koala pals bath & hair wash. You can go to www.melaleuca.com to find out about the products. They contain melaleuca oil which is tea tree oil basically. They are also more natural. Basically, try to find the most natural products you can. Try using less harsh chemicals. At least use baby detergent or free and clear detergent on the clothing. I have noticed some new products coming out in the store that are "green" or "natural". I am trying to switch as much of my products as possible. A mom on mamasource -- Amber V. can sign you up -- if you are interested in the Melaleuca. Good luck.

Hi my name is C. and I have had psoriasis for years. I have learned that food is a very big factor in eczema even though some doctors do not agree. Make a chart and see what he is eating and when does his break out occur most. My son had this at a young age and grew out of it around 2-3 years old. We used to stay up with him and put cetephil on his face (The tub of cream). It seemed to calm his irritation a bit. The last thing is stress...it seems that some kids get stressed out and that is the way their body reacts so teaching him how to calm down and breath. Hope this is helpful and good luck. There are many books on the matter and they help as well.

My granddaughter also has eczema. She has a wonderful dermatologist, Dr Cole Perez. Nothing seemed to work. Everything that was prescribed was mostly topical ointments. My daughter's suggestions are to wash all his clothing in non fragrance detergents. No Tide Or Gain. These products only made it worse. Try Sun Detergent. Wash everything that comes in contact with his skin. The prescribed medications are Elidel and Hydroxizine. These meds. have really helped. She is not as itchy and uncomfortable anymore. She sleeps better and doesn't get up grouchy. She doesn't scratch to the point where she makes herself bleed anymore. I hope this information helps your grandson.

We have a grandson with eczema from head to toe. All of the male grandkids in my son-in-laws family have the same problem.
Pediatric Dermatologist said no soap only Cetaphil lotion.
In addition, I have a nephew and a sister-in-law that have severe eczema on their hands. Again, they use Cetaphil lotion, cleanser, etc. Wal*Mart has a comparable brand that seems to work as well, and is far less expensive. They have presecription cream, of course; but, have to use something to clean and condition their skin when they wash.
Hope this has been helpful. Good luck and best wishes.

Hi L.,
My 23 month old has eczema too. I use aveeno eczama care cream to maintain the dryness after baths. Our dermatologists recommended creams to work way more better than lotions for dryness. She also prescribed us Triamcinolone Acetonide ointment USP 0.1% for the affected area twice daily on the body and HYDROCORTISONE CREAM USP, 2.5% for the face. I suggest to get him seen for the prescriptions he could need a different dose. The Dr. gives us five refills before we have to go back cause with no insurance it gets pricey. I am very pleased to say that his skin looks great when i use these creams as directed, most of all he dont cry as much when he is all moisturized.

I have had it all my life and my son now has it. It is very seasonal, usually gets bad when the weather changes drastically. We use Dove soap because it doesn't have the perfumes, and we use Aveeno lotion. I occasionally give him oatmeal baths when it gets bad. Use the soap everytime, use the lotion at least twice a day. Stay away from anything with alcohol or perfumes in it because it will irritate it more. Also, diet sometimes plays a role in eczema. Hope this helps!

My oldest daughter had eczema very bad and I have finally got it under control. The products I use are from Melaleuca. I use the body wash, hair wash, laundry soap, and lotion. I have tried so much as well and never found anything that worked this well. She had prescription stuff but that made no difference and I did not want to use the steriod cream so I went searching.
I will tell you, Melaleuca is a wellness company. You can buy directly from them or you can sign up to be a Preferred Customer and get things at a discount. If you sign up, they do require a minimum purchase each month. I am a stay at home mom and we order from them monthly, I find it to be well worth it and I do not spend any more than I would monthly on things at the store.
If you have already tried this stuff, sorry to bother you and if you are interested in it, let me know and I will help you get it.

My granddaughter has had exzema since she was a little baby. She is now 7 years old. She has it very bad and my daughter has taken her to so many Dr's and has used just about anything and everything. She recently took her to see a dermatologist Dr. Ochs at Blanco & Bitters, who prescribed Clobex. It is an adult Rx and you have to use less than an adult would and can not use it for long periods of time, but within 1 day it was amazing and it was almost all gone. By day 2 it was totally cleared up. It has now been a week and she has no exzema and she is so much calmer not having to scratch and have all that iching. I wouldn't have believed it myself had I not seen the results. Amazing!

Hi L.,
You mentioned trying a lot of things so you may have already used these products, but just in case you haven't... consider trying 2 Aveeno Baby products (even though your grandson is 8 years old they may still help): Aveeno Baby Soothing Bath Treatment (soak for 15-20 minutes) and Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Moisture Cream. These are both sold in the baby product isle in stores (not with typical lotions and bath products). Both of these products are specifically made to help Eczema. Also, it's important to apply lotion 6-8 times a DAY to see any relief as Eczema is rather stubborn. Hope this helps your grandson! -A. D

My son has had eczema pretty much since birth, he is now 6yrs. I had to take him to Doctor's and Dermatologists several times. I was always recommended to use CETAPHIL SOAP on him. In warm weather I lotion him up with CETAPHIL lotion. In cooler weather we use EUCERIN cream or AQUAPHOR ointment. Most of the times it works pretty good. Several times I was told to use Hydrocortisone with one of the lotions. It all depends on the severity of the eczema. My son sometimes has it really bad on his wrists, and he was placed on steroid creams.

My 6 year old has areas of it on his legs, so he uses it plus the skin conditioning oil that they sell. If your interested in taking a look at these products, please check out my website at www.LisaCasinelli.myarbonne.com. Hi L.. My father-in-law and cousin both suffer from eczema and they found that drinking XanGo juice helped clear it up. The juice is all natural and is made from the mangosteen fruit. Your grandson would probably only need to drink 1-2 ounces a day. It has worked wonders for me on my allergies, joint pain and headaches. You can check out my website, give me a call or shoot me an email and I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have. Good luck!
I'm going to second what Mindee R said. An overwhelming amount of the time, eczema is caused by a food allergy. Although treating topically with a steroid or some other cream may help, it is only treating symptoms.
Dairy is the #1 cause (followed by yeast and gluten). However, it can take up to 30 days for dairy to completely get out of the body's systems. I would suggest eliminating all dairy from her diet for 30dys and see if it clears up.
Also, seeing a homeopathic-minded MD might help. Some are more willing to explore the reasons, while others just write an Rx for topical steroid to relieve itching, etc.
Just a thought.
Last fall we started a food elimination diet to discover the cause(s) of my dd's frequent headaches. We eliminated all dairy, corn and artificial food dyes -- both obvious and 'hidden'. If you'd like a list of all the hidden/obvious dairy ingredients, just email me (though you could probably find them on the net).

My daughter and I both have eczema. Your best bet would be to see an allergist to determine what your grandson is allergic to that causes the eczema (it is usually dust mites, unless it is just genetic like myself and my daughter). Most over the counter remedies do not work, the best presciption I got for her was from the dermatologist. If presciptions aren't the way to go, good old fashioned vaseline helps better than anything. Very short baths without soap or bubbles, just plain old water and wash the hair at the end of the bath so there isn't any residue in the water, showers are best if they can take them. Any protection against dust mites is also very helpful, bedding especially. Wash everything in HOT water once a week.

The trick with Eczema is to keep in under control. It must be treated on a regular basis. Aquaphor/Eucerin type lotions everyday as well as what your doctor prescribes. There are lots of different medications that work wonderfully and you only need to use a very small amount as long as you treat it regularly. Be sure that you're seeing a doctor that is well educated in Eczema treatments so that you're using the right medication. That is key!! Be diligent because the worse it gets the harder it is to treat and the more uncomfortable the child is. Good luck!

The steriod creams the doctors prescribe make their skin thin and will create long term problems. We are so thankful we have found Arbonne's products. I'd first find the foods that he is allergic too and remove it from his diet for a month. Milk and milk products are usually the first type of food that is removed. I'm surprised that I didn't see more of this approach in the other responses. Removing milk products are easy and you can expect to see results (if he's allergic) in 2-4 weeks. If he is allergic, you can expect to see a significant improvement in his skin. I'd do some research on eczema and food allergies online to give you more information and other parents who are going through the same thing. Good luck!

I suffered for 6 years with my son, and tried EVERYTHING you could possibly think of - including lathering him up in vaseline and wrapping him up....wierd I know, but his pediatrician said to do that. It was so bad that he'd break the skin and it would be raw.
Anyways, my boss was so upset about me missing work so much due to me taking him everywhere - that he sent me to his dermatologist..... and what he gave me worked the DAY I put it on him. It's a compound that he made up himself, and I don't have it with me at the moment, but it's basically 4 things and the cream itself doesn't have a name. Anyways, send me an email and as soon as I get home today I'll respond with what the label has....I promise you will be so happy with the result!! By the way, you'll have to find one of those old time pharmacy's because walgreens doesn't fill it - since it's a compound. I use PharmCare near the walmart on dixie. karinainhouston is my aol email/screen name. =)

Lots of olive oil. Massage it into his skin daily, especially at night. Definitely have him tested for allergies. His eczema could be stemming from food or environmental allergies. If they can treat the internal condition then you will notice a big improvement in his skin condition. By all means look into going natural on your household products. My body thanked me! Check out Melaleuca. I love them and am a member or at least check out some of the earth friendly products at your grocery store. Ointments were better for my dd's than creams. We have been in skin drug studies and have tried every snake oil out there old and new! Sun lamp treatments, how wet towel wraps, salt water baths to emulate the sea, and cutting edge treatment (Cyclosporin), and Vaseline, we feel we have done a lot to give our girls relief. The newest belief is that it is related to the immune system. Those treatments have had the best outcome....alas not permanent.
I highly recommened Pediatric Dermatologist in the Houston Medical Center Dr. Adelaide Hebert. ###-###-####. We have seen her for the past 15 years. She has treated my dd's for their skin and is aware of the other issues that come along with eczema particularly, the psychological affect, allergy, sleeping problems, disfigurement, other accompanying skin afflictions, etc. She treats the whole person. My girls lover her as do we!

Hi L.,
My son also has eczema and has suffered with it since he was a baby. We spent alot of money trying different products including prescriptions and over the counter. About 8 years ago I was introduced to a company who offered home products which are Tea Tree Oil based and non-toxic. I noticed just switching my laundry products cleared up his red cheeks and his itching issues while playing sports. They also have a wonderful pharmacy grade lotion and bath oil with a high concentration of the Tea Tree Oil, called Renew. I can't tell you how much that lotion has helped my son. And finally if he has a flare up, which does happen occasionally, they have another pharmacy product called DermaCort, which is an anti-itch cream, awesome, usually clears it up overnight! After discovering this safer product line 8 years ago, I can't go back to over the counter products any longer. This company truly manufactures these products to help those who suffer with asthma, allergies and sensitive skin. If you would like more information, please call at ###-###-#### or email me: ____@____.com and I would be happy to call you with more information! I know you will be impressed as I have been. K.

Please try a chlorine filter! My children used to have scaly skin and course feeling hair. I got a chemical filter, mainly for the high amts of chlorine in Baytown water. Their skin now looks like you've put lotion on and their hair is silky! Taking a 10 min shower w/out a filter is like drinking 10 glasses of straight tap water. Your body gets 10% of its water thru the skin. You also are breathing the chlorine in like a gas. It's very unhealthy for skin and breathing issues. Also, for eczema, there are normally trigger foods. My mother's is eggs. Try to pinpoint when he has his worst symptoms and what he ate. Anohter thing is to get natural laundry products. Detergents and softeners are constantly on their skin...clothes, towels and then sheets! Good luck!

Hi! Have you ever heard of Body Balance? It is whole food juice made from aloe, which is very healing, and sea vegetables, which are packed full of unaltered nutrients. It helps balance out your system by providing it with a lot of the nutrients we don't get with all the processing that goes on. I have read testimonials about people whose eczema has gone away while they've been drinking this. Basically, it comes in a juice form, and for children, you figure 1 oz./50 pounds of their weight. If you go to www.liquid-vitamins-body-balance.com/skin_disorders.htm you can read one of the testimonials on eczema. Their are 32 oz/bottle, so if he weighs pretty close to 50 lbs, you'd only need one bottle a month. The good thing about this, is it's a juice, you can drink it strait, or you can mix it with something, and there's no risk of overdose. If you want to check it out more, or place an order, go to www.lifeforce.net/20718417. Hope this helps! J. L

As strange as this is going to sound, try applying Petroleum Jelly right after bath and before bed. Make sure and put pj's on to keep the jelly from getting on the sheets. During the day try the tub cream of Cetaphil. Do not use the regular lotions, but only the creams. My son is almost 3 and also has terrible eczema as do I. I think you will be surprised at how well the Petroleum Jelly works.

Dont be afraid to cap full of clorox in bath water, after he gets out of tub, pat dry, base him down with ointment, heat large bath towels and wrap whole body with warm towels, remove towels, base body with small layer of oitment again. Repeat every night until you see improvement. I also use Brown Sugar Body Scrub http:warmspirit.org/K., also natural organic soaps. I hope this help.

Both of my sons have had terrible eczema and we now use natural products by Melaleuca. We have changed our laundry items and cleaning items, as well as the bathing items and the only time we have an issue with a flare up is if they wear something that has been laundered in anything other than the Melaleuca and if they use any other bath wash. You can check my website out for great info on this.

My daughter had eczema all her life, she is now 30, dermatalogist, creams, all kinds, nothing ever took it away, it would dissappear for a couple of weeks and return with a vengeance, especially during winter.
Many skin conditions are caused by toxins building up in the skin. The liver detoxifying properties of xanthones can help with these types of conditions, removing toxings and restoring healthy skin.
If you get a garlic and rub in under your foot, within minutes the taste is in your mouth, that is how fast all these creams and lotions with chemicals get into our bloodstream.
My daughter is drinking a natural juice, and her eczema has cleared and is eczema free for the past 2 yrs, she drinks 1 ounce in the morning and one ounce at dinner.

My daughter had eczema on her hands, legs, and arms for an extended amount of time. I tried everything from over the counter to prescription medications. The thing that made it go away was getting rid of all chemicals out of my house and finding what she was allergic to. When we got rid of bleach and went to using green products with tea tree oil it went away in one month. The only time it has come back was when she spent a week at my parents house where they use bleach.

I had exzema on my face, both temples the size of a quarter and it would get red and almost bleed. Nothing worked except for Renew Skin Therapy Lotion from Melaleuca, Inc. The Wellness Company. www.melaleuca.com You need to be a customer and have an account set up through an existing customer but after that you can order directly from the company. It cleared my eczema completely and it never came back!! I also used the Melaleuca Oil (tea tree oil) from Melaleuca on it. That is first aid in a bottle and Melaleuca only uses the highest quality with the medicinal benefits. I wouldn't be able to live without this amazing oil. I use it for everything, from tiny scratches to getting rid of sinus infections.
If you want more information about Melaleuca, just let me know.
I have an uncle that had eczema on his elbows. He tried everything to and one day came across this liquid at Whole Foods. It's called Neem Aura Naturals (triple potency liquid herbal extract). It comes in a small dark glass bottle with dropper inside. the lid is rubber and is the top of the dropper. It can be ingested or used topically. My uncle rubbed that stuff all over his elbows and it all went away within a month. It says on the bottle that it shouldn't be used by women who are pregnant or children under the age of 2. Just to be safe, I would check with my doctor to make sure it is ok to use on a young boy. Even though its natural, you just never know. Hope that helps!

So glad that I read this! My nephew has allergy induced eczema and used to be miserable. He is 9. His arms and behind his knees would get so bad and he would scratch until he bled. I found a company that makes natural products. My neice also has allergy induced asthma. Since my sister converted ALL of her household products to Melaleuca the eczema is almost non-existant, my neice has not been in the hospital with her asthma since either. By the age of 2 she had been hospitalized 4 times. For the eczema, my sister would rub in a topical cream they make and use their lotion on a regular basis. Changing her laundry supplies and bath products along with the cleaners helped greatly and the topical products help with flair -ups. I hope this helps. You may contact me if you wish and I can help you to save on the price of the products by becoming a preferred customer. I hope this helps-

It helps clear up the infection ar least temporally. I am told that there is no cure, Find out the triggers and try to avoid them. Some triggers are Laundry soap, Pet hair,

My ped said that eczema is an allergic reaction, most likely to dairy or wheat. My daughter (breastfed) has eczema and it was getting better when I stopped drinking milk. I am back on milk and it's getting worse again. I also now have eczema.
Also, he said to only bathe the child one a week or longer if possible. This has really seemed to help keep the eczema contained.

My little girl had eczema real bad. It was all over her arms legs and even on her tummy. I had a med cabinet full of all kinds of creams. But the best thing I discovered was oatmeal baths. Believe it or not diet can help to. They say eczema is a reaction to a child's nerves, so I cut out ALL sugars. She is now 7 And I haven't seen any signs of eczema in about 3 years.
Also sometimes allergies can flair up when there outside playing. Keep him in some comfy pants for a while when he is out side. Spring is coming up and I know around spring time was when my childs eczema flared the worst.
Good luck.

Hello L.,
Tiqua is absolutely correct on bathing your grandchild with an oatmeal soap and watching his diet. My 7 year has had eczema since he was born, and I noticed that when I give him a nutritional diet, which includes a brown seaweed called limu moui, his skin is beautiful. He actually drinks it and I put it in a spray bottle or in in lotion. The taste is great. It taste like apple juice. Even my 3 year old drinks it. It includes over 70 vital nutrients including immune-supporting antioxidants, polyphenols, amino acids, glyconutrients, vitamins and minerals, and Fucoidan. It has also been on ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX news. To find out more about this amazing product go to www.discoverlimu.com and make sure you enter my referral number ###-###-####. Good luck!

You may already know that eczema is sometimes related to allergies. Does your son have any allergies? If you are not sure, I recommend taking him to an allergest to get to the root of the problem. You certainly can treat his symptoms, but the underlying problem will still be there. Hope this helps!

Hey L.:
Sorry to hear about your grandson's bout with eczema on his arms and legs; that condition really causes the skin to appear so unsightly. I have high praises for the product Limu; it has been very helpful to me and my co-workers in various areas. Specifically, I recommended the use of Limu to a co-worker whose niece was suffering from eczema.
They (the mother and aunt) applied it directly to the skin of the effected area (although the product is for ingesting, but we agreed it shouldn't hurt to apply it directly). She reported back to me that the product started working immediately, and there were no telltale scares afterward.
I had another co-worker who used it in an infected ear of one of her little ones, and she went on to explain, just how much guck came out of that ear, and the little one was up and about in short order.
I am a firm believer of the product, as far as I am concerned, it works on just about everything and for everyone in your household. It should work for your grandbaby as well. Good Luck.

Hi L.,
I suggest that you should go through this with your grandson's pediatrician. My daughter (now 4) was like that when she turned 2 and it especially worsened during winter. We had her gone through an allergy test so that we would have an idea on what triggers the eczema. We put the Cetaphil lotion on her (a lot) especially after a bath. We tried the Eucerin but it did not do any good. Also, her pediatrician and dermatologist both recommended Hylira (a water based lotion that is very light and is very effective on sensitive skin) to put on her skin throughout the day. They also both recommended Mimyx ( an ointment to put on the affected areas to help the skin to "re-grow"). They both said that these are highly recommended on young kids because they do not pose any risk to their skins. We used for a very short time a stronger dose of hydrocortisone (?) for those areas that are really bad. And, lastly, she takes Zyrtec syrup everyday to control her allergies because we found out after her allergy test that she is allergic to al lot of things. So far, after two years, we noticed her skin looks normal. This past winter she did not have any of those dry itchy spots on her skin. We are hoping that she has outgrown most of her allergies. Good luck and hope this helps!

Here is what worked for my son. I changed all my laundry detergent to dye and scent free. He only got a bath every other day using Cedephil all over body wash (it is really weird it does not lather) even on his hair. I then applied Cedephil cream to the eczema about 8 times a day (every time I thought about it or saw the spots), oh don't get the Cedephil "lotion" the one that has CREAM in the name...my pediatrician was very specific. 1% over the counter hydro cortisone cream for itching up to twice a day. The spots were gone relatively quickly and we have just kept up the same routine with laundry and bath time. He only has winter breakouts, but so does my husband. I don't think anyone really knows what causes it. I'm just letting you know what worked for us. {{{{hugs}}}} I hope he is better soon.
