Eating with Allergies

I would like to know if anyone has breakfast ideas for a 20-month old toddler who is allergic to milk, eggs and wheat (among other things). I feed him oatmeal with fruits and rice crispies with fresh fruit most of the time. I think he's getting tired of it and i can't blame him. He is not very picky and he loves trying out new food. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A.

Tofu scramble, wheat free bread and tofutti--non-dairy cream cheese, smoothies & toast...there are a lot of resources as well. You might try going to Whole Foods, there are many foods there that are made dairy, egg, & wheat free.

dear A.,

i know i should be helping YOU out by responding to this email, but i was curious...my daughter was diagnosed with infantile colitis caused by a milk allergy and she is now on alimentum and starting solids...she is 5 months. we got a list from the doctor which told us what foods to stay away from, but how did you find out that your child was actually allergic to eggs, wheat, etc...If you have the time, I would love to hear from you...I am a new mom and given what we had to go through finding out her milk allergy, i dont want to put her through any more problems with foods I should definitely stay away from...Thanks and sorry to butt-in on your blog!

I just found this interesting article online. Maybe it will help you identify a bigger variety of foods for your son!

Hi

We found out my daughter is allergic to milk and eggs. It makes life very hard but we are grateful. Going out to eat is tough. Applebees makes grilled chix and steamed brocolli. We went and talked to a nutritionist and it helped. Make sure if you are out to eat ask if the chix is marinated - alot of the marinades contain milk or cheese..

Breakfast we do oatmeal, silk makes a yogurt and I make a smoothie with the yogurt, frozen bananna and juice. It is a great filler. Vans does make a great waffle but I am not sure if it is wheat free.

I have yet to find a good cheese or cream cheese substitute. If you find one let me know. Alot of cheeses say soy but if you read them they DO HAVE milk or casesin in them so be careful.

My daughter is two now and I pray she is outgrowing this..

Keep in touch..

There's waffles by a company called Vans (I think) that are lactose, wheat and, I believe, egg free. They're not the best tasting in the world but they're not bad either once you put a topping on them. They come in two varieties, plain and blueberry. They're under specialty items and are not that expensive compared with Eggos. You could also try rice cakes with margarine or peanut butter on them. The milk and egg allergy does take away from your options for breakfast!

Your son is 'lucky' to know now that he's allergic to them and didn't find out until he was 30 and addicted to all the things he shouldn't have like I am. I *should* be gluten free but giving up the breads and pastas and desserts has just been too much for me, even though I am much healthier when I'm not eating glutens.

How about giving him things that arent categorized as "breakfast"?

Who hasnt enjoyed cold pizza for breakfast? He'll brag that he has the coolest mom on the block!
