Hi All,
I recently started taking two kids after school. A 5 yr year old and a 10 yr old. I also take care of my 10 yr nephew. Once we get home I give them a lunch (mac and cheese, p.b & j sandwiches etc). I also offer them 2 snacks ( usually fruit or vaggies) while at my house. They are there for only two and a half hours. Well the 5 yr. not only wants seconds for lunch, she eats her two snacks and still wants more to eat. I have a two and three year old of my own on their own schedule. They eat dinner at around 5:00p.m. The 5 yr old also wants to eat dinner when my girls eat. She in my opinion has a weight problem. (She is bigger than the 8yr old next door). I try and keep them busy and active. she colors, draws, we go for a walk and play outside. But it seems all she thinks about is food and wanting to eat. I am getting a little tired of having to tell her to get out of the cuboards and go play. Help!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

OOOH, well that would make a lot of sense. Since my kids are not in school yet I am a little new on this. I will start next week to give them just a snack after school. I like the cup idea.
The dinner thing has only happend a couple of time when the mom has picked them up late. I noticed it said 5pm I ment to put 5:30pm. Thanks for all the great advice!

First off why are you feeding them lunch if it's after school! I think maybe they are just eating b/c they know you will give it to them. Second give them one cup of juice and then afterwards give them each a water bottle w/ water only no more juice. Third talk with their mothers and see if they eat when they get home maybe the mom is tell them that that's thier dinner. These are only my opinions and I think you really need to talk with the mother. Hope this helps,
L.

The rule here is if you are here when we eat, you can eat too. Friends, students, daycare, whatever - if my kids are eating, I think it is incredibly rude to tell another child nope - you can't have any.

That said, mac and cheese and pbjs are not nutritious foods. I've actually noticed that I am hungrier AFTER I eat them than before - esp on white bread.

I would talk to the little girl's parents and suggest that she be screened for diabetes. Many Type I diabetics, before they are diagnosed, show only increased thirst and hunger after simple sugars (fruits, white bread, jelly).

And I would keep your opinion about her weight problem to yourself, unless you're ready for someone to point out your children's lack of manners or delay in potty training or SOMETHING that you feel is none of their business. At the same time, if her parents bring her to get tested for diabetes the doctor might do a full workup to check for biological issues if, in his medical opinion, her weight (as opposed to her growth) is an issue.

Give her more to eat then..BUT....make it healthy. Give her more veggies to munch on or fruit. This way she eats healthy things. You are doin great by taking her for walks & encouraging outside play. Just give her more fruits & veggies & water. Water makes you feel full. But dont make her feel like you are focusing on her weight. This can cause depression & depression makes some people eat more.I am a nurse & you have to be careful how you deal with people & their weight. Also smaller portions & more frequent snacks helps metabolism speed up.Also studies have shown it is better to eat 4-6 small meals a day rather than 3 large meals. What time does her parents pick her up. If they dont eat at home til late she may really be hungry by then. Also you can go online at google and search for BMI calculator. type in her age, height & weight & will tell you if she is really over weight. Some people carry their weight differntly than others. She may not be as over weight as you think. Continue to encourage active activities & good healthy snacks.

I would offer her only snacks that you planned on. Of course the same as the other children. If she is still hungry, tell her she has had plenty and offer her water. By getting her to take in more water will help ward off hunger and help take off weight. Make the kitchen off limits. The kids have no business helping themselves to food when you have already fed them. Be firm but loving. Good luck!

I would talk with the mother and find out what time she feeds them dinner. I agree with the other lady, maybe she is going home and not eating and making her mother frustrated. I also take care of kids in my home. The key is to talk with the parents. You can only make certain situations more difficult if there is no communication about the days events with the parents. I also agree with not feeding your kids dinner while the other children are still there. If they are all eating at 3 or 3:30 it won't hurt your kids one bit to push their dinner back 30 minutes to an hour. One after school snack is more than enough to hold these kids till dinner. Especially if they are there less than 3 hours. The reason she is eating so much is only out of habit. If she's a little chunky then it's definately not because she is hungry.

Offer only fruits and veggies for snacks, try not to give 2nds at luncn time instead offer more veggies. You can never eat too many fresh veggies!!! Baby carrots, celery, cucumber, tomatoes are best I have found for kids... try not to add any dip. Just veggies.

That is way too much! They eat lunch at school. You should just be giving them an afterschool SNACK. We have a choice of one only: crackers (one paper cup full), raw veggies (again, a paper cup full) or piece of fruit and milk or water or koolaid with splenda for their drink. (mine are 11 and 13 and this is plenty for them) After all, they will be eating dinner within a couple of hours.

I would also push back the dinner time for your kiddos. If the mom comes at 5:30, then feed yours at 5:30. It won't hurt them to change their schedule a little. When you watch other's kids, sometimes you have to make adjustments with your own. Just my opinion, but I would consider it rude for you to feed your kids dinner in front of mine everday.

I would talk to the mom. They may be going home and not wanting to eat what she fixes for dinner because they filled up on stuff at your house. You never know, she may be just a frustrated as you are.
