my 18 month old has ugly eating habits. I don't know what went wrong..when he started table food at 12 months he was doing ok up until a few months ago. Whenever i put finger food on a plate for him he'll throw it in his mouth kinda like popcorn and won't chew..he has food in his mouth and is trying to fit everything on the plate in his mouth without chewing first. He eats sooooo fast. For example, for breakfast i'll give him a whole egg with a half a banana (cut in pieces) and a fork., by the time i get a cup with milk to give to him he's finished eating... and is crying for more. Is this normal? is it just a phase? my MIL tells me that her son, my husband, as a child did the same thing and guess what HE STILL DOES. omg lol...is there anything i can do to show/teach my son to eat what''s in his mouth first before taking another bite?

He's a good eater, he's everything, just doesn't know how

He does good with a fork and spoon, expect sometimes when he wants to fit everything in his mouth he will stop using the spoon/fork and use his hand or try to "drink" out of the bowl or plate lol...whyyy. he wants all his food in his mouth yesterday

What can I do next?

Well, kids this age and even 2 year olds... do not 'know' how to portion size and how much to put in their mouth.
They then have a bunch of food in their mouth and like a Chipmunk, have it just piled in their mouth.

Since your child is not 'chewing' the food, is he just swallowing it????

Be careful, that he does not choke or aspirate the food.
Kids this age, choke on food and if they over stuff their mouths.

Maybe you need to put less food on his plate.
And, Mash it, since he does not chew.

My son choked on food. When he was a toddler. He like many toddlers, over stuff their mouths.
I would tell him it is 'dangerous.' He can choke.

Or maybe, he is really just doing what his Dad does. Since you said your Husband eats the same way.
Kids are sponges.

I'd go back to giving him two bites of food on his plate or tray at a time and NOT giving him anymore till that was chewed and swallowed. Extra work for you but hopefully you can train him to eat normally, and change in a few months.

Don't give him all the food at once, instead sit down with him and give him 2 pieces at a time, let him know that he can't have more until he's chewed and swallowed. If you let him keep eating like this he will never get full and when he does he'll have overeaten, increasing his stomach size and paving the road for problems in the future.. He'll grow out of it, mine did ;).

Only give him a very small amount at a time. What he's doing isn't abnormal - it's not a sign that there's anything wrong (especially if that's what he sees dad do). He just hasn't learned how to eat healthily. So get everything ready (egg cooked and cut up, banana sliced, milk poured, etc) then put him in his chair and sit with him, giving him a few pieces at a time. It'll take you longer, but in the long run it's worth it.

And don't worry about if he uses utensils or hands or picks up the bowl to slurp out of it. That's all part of the food learning experience at this age. There's plenty of time as he gets older to teach him "etiquette." I don't think I started insisting on utensils until my kids were close to 3, although I always made them available.
