Early Prgnancy Issues

Hi moms! I am a proud mother of 2 boys who keep my very busy. My husband and I began trying for our third this summer. The start of my last period was June 12 of this year. I took 6 home pregnancy tests, which all came out to be positive. I am guessing that conception took place at least a week or two after june 12. that would make me around 6 weeks pregnant to date. I began very light spotting about a weeks ago and just yesterday I began bleeding a bit heavier and passed a few clots the size of a nickle, but not considered heavy. I went to the ER and the blood work indicated that I am 6 weeks pregnant, but nothing showed on the ultrasound. They couldn't see a baby, a heartbeat, not even a sac. I've heard of women not seeing a baby until about week 12, but I am a little concerned of course. The doctor labled this as being a "threatened miscarriage" but "wasn't really sure". I have no cramping. I am just finishing up some antibiotics from an ear infection and have had a couple yest infections this summer. Could that be the cause of bleeding, or am I just over reacting? The doctor didn't seem very sure to me and I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this? Thanks for your help, it's very appreciated :)

What can I do next?

It could be implantation bleeding (when the fetus implants into the uterus - usually this is painless bleeding) - this is very common early in pregnancy. Consult your OB but meanwhile just take it easy - I'm sure it will pass.

Was the ultrasound internal? Sometimes that early in a pregnancy it's difficult to see anything on an external ultrasound (or sometimes an internal as well!)

I'm sure everything will be just fine!

This happened to me too, with my 3rd. I went in for bleeding around 6 weeks. They didn't see anything with the unlta sound and asked me "Are you sure your pregnant?" He did a blood test and saw that I was, it was just too early to see anything. The next visit they saw everything. He said it was probably just some implantation bleeding. But I know your feeling. I was terrified that I was having a misscarraige! I know it's easier said than done, but try not to worry too much about it.
Take care & congratulations!

I believe the pregnancy tests are pretty darn accurate...especially if 6 all read positive. However, I have heard of women being "pregnant" yet there was actually nothing there. I would just try to sit tight & see what happens. I would suspect that this type of thing happens a lot more than people think simply b/c not everyone takes a pregnancy test so quickly after the possibility of being pregnant. I do remember seeing a heartbeat on the ultrasound of my son at just 5 weeks. I know every body & baby is different. I wish you the best!

It sounds like you are pregnant but you could be 4 weeks, could be 7 weeks...they can really only make guesses. The ER doctor probably isn't that experienced in OB issues. I say check w/ your OB to confirm estimated due date and see what is happening. My sister had an ultra sound because of uncertainity and then had to have another because the results were iffy. I personally think she just wasn't as far along as they thought (they go by the date of you last period so in your case they are going to estimate you by the June 12 date even if you say you didn't have sex again until July 12). That is why due dates are just estimates because that is all they can really go on.

I would call your OB, they would want to see you ASAP. Usually all the ER can tell you when you're bleeding like that is whether or not you lost the baby - sounds inconclusive right now. I had bleeding with my last pregnancy from weeks 9-11. At first it was heavy bleeding so I assumed I lost it...I did not. The bleeding continued on and off - I went to the OB 3 times over the course of those two weeks...I had my daughter 4 months ago (to the day!) and all turned out fine. Good luck! Call your OB!

I do not want to be the bad guy here and you never know what life is to bring. Everything happens for a reason is what everyone shares with me. I hope it is of some comfort to you. I agree you need to see your OB and one who can do an internal u/s to confirm but when you miscarry, i have had 7, so I understand this a bit of what you are describing. It takes a while for your hcg to go down, do you think you could have an eptopic pg? Did the Er check your tubes? I think you need to brace yourself for the worse and after you see your OB who should get you in instantly once you say you are pg and bleeding you can just walk in. hey can be sued bad if something happens to you if not. So get in there and get yoru answer so you do not have to have this weight on your shoulders. If everything is ok then you are very lucky and hang on to this hope and be VERY careful for the rest of the pregnancy. I think if you go with the bad news first you will not be so disappointed and if it is good you will just be happier. Does that help or make sense?
Take care,J.

Because you can't pinpoint when you ovulated, it's impossible to tell exactly how far along you are. You are at a difficult point to diagnose, though. Another week or two will tell for sure, because they baby will be big enough to see by then. Agony waiting, I know. Bleeding can be very common. I had a very alarming bleed with my daughter at 7 weeks, but ultrasound showed she was just fine. So hang in there, find things to distract yourself, and wait.

Same thing happened to me. I had some bleeding, went to the doctor around week 5. We couldn't see the heartbeat on the ultrasound, however, a blood test confirmed my pregnancy. On my chart, he labeled it as a "threatened miscarriage". I went back at 8 weeks for another ultrasound and everything was fine! I delivered a happy and healthy baby who is now 13 months old. So, I'd just wait until your next ultrasound. Chances are things will be fine. However, it's the whole "waiting game" that is very annoying.
