I had chronic ear infections and am allergic to milk. It wasn't until my parents took me off milk, that the infections stop. I get my ears adjusted as an adult and get my toddler son's ears adjusted. He has never had an infection, but we also found his milk intolerance very early on.

I went to the chiropractor for the first time when I was pregnant. I didn't even know what a chiropractor did but I was in so much pain and someone suggested it, so I went. HELPED tremendously!!!!! And my chiropractor suggested bringing my newborn in when she came. So we did.

And when she went to the doc and had her first ear infection (actually doc said "really bad double ear infection) we ran her straight to the chiropractor. I did fill the prescription though just in case. We noticed a difference in her behavior almost immediately. When we went back to the doc a week later he said (and I quote), "keep giving her the medicine, it's working really well. Her ears are all better". SHE NEVER HAD A DROP OF MEDICINE!!! Only an adjustment! We were DEFINITE believers then. So any time our kids are sick with almost anything, our first plan of action is the chiropractor. That has helped them every time!

I figure. It won't hurt them and very well could help them! And MUCH cheaper than a visit to the doctor!

You can reduce symptoms by removing foods, BUT the root cause of these symptoms is adrenal malfunction. Go to the root cause.

Cortisol and aldosterone are hormones that are secreted by the adrenal glands. They control the immune system, the central nervous system, organ function, mineral balance, electroylye balance, sex hormone balance, growth hormone balance, blood sugar, blood pressure, the acidity and amount of the acid in the stomach , how the kidney, liver heart, bladder, brain, and lung function, the appetite... and metabolism of food, how the bowel/gut works, and more.

One of cortisol's jobs is to SUPRESS the immune system. Let me be more specific. Our adrenal hormones go through a diurnal pattern. They are highest in the morning, and gradually reduce during the day, becoming lowest at midnight -2 am.

What our body does is go into a hyper state of immune function at night, while we are sleeping, so it can fight infection and also do repair. When the morning comes, the 8am surge of cortisol "suppresses" the immune system and takes it out of overdrive. Those who have low cortisol output have immune systems that are still in a an overdrive state during the day. They become allergic to all kinds of things, foods, smells, dyes, topical things that touch the skin, etc. In addition to that, the low cortisol causes the acidity of the stomach (and the blood acidity) to change. Now, the body is coming metabolically acidic. The ability to digest PROTIENS is compromised. And so is fats to an extent. There also becomes a dysregulation of blood sugar because cortisol controls that too. The morning cortisol spike is suppose to raise the blood sugar so the body can eat and digest foods. People with Low cortisol have low blood sugar( hypoglycemia), people with high cortisol get diabetes (high blood sugar). The brain is an organ who sustains vital life. It CANNOT go without blood sugar or the person will die. So, in order to bring up the low blood sugar, it releases a backup hormone- adrenaline, and it will usually do this about 2-3 a.m. The adrenaline rush will typically wake the person, I mean- wide awake. Blood sugar deregulation also contributes to the metabilism issue.
Then you have the thyroid hormones responsible for metabolism. These hormones are manufactured in the adrenal gland. Without proper precursor hormones to feed the thyroid, you have further metabolism issues.

The mucosals are directly related to the adrenal hormones. Lungs, sinus, ears, these are all mucosal tissues. Aldosterone affects ears and hearing. people low in aldosterone hormone will have hearing issues and ear pain, (even with no apparent infection present on exam) Excess ear wax is caused by LOW adrenal hormones. Adults with years of hearing loss can find a large precentage of hearing regain by taking aldosterone replacement (Florinef) which is by prescription.
I want to interject something here about milk. Milk certainly contributes to the problems because it creates excess mucus. It causes our normally thin and viscous mucosal fluids to become thick and tacky. Now any bacteria entering the nose or mouth gets stuck on the tacky mucus, instead of being washed down into the stomach anfd killed by the acid. There in the mucosal areas in proliferates. So, milk DOES aid in ear, sinus and lung problems.
Back to hormones. Cortisol replacement is (hydrocortisone) which can be by prescription or can also be bought online in pill form, usually 10 or 20 mgs.... or over the counter in very low concentrations in a 1% topical hydrocortisone creme which would probably equal about 3mg in a very small dollop (guessing).
For my daughter I give licorice root 3x a day (increases cortisol half life)and the creme in between when needed but not always. It is a very fine balance to acheive proper hormone replacement. She has already tested low in cortisol by saliva testing.

Testing for hormone levels can be done with:
*24 hour saliva cortisol test (not the blood test)
*Aldosterone ,renin, and electrolyte testing (salt fast for 3 days prior)
*and if these show issues deeper testing (ACTH stimulation testing and more) is warranted.
A general medical doctor will typically not have a clue about anything adrenal that I have said here. If they will not give the saliva cortisol test you can buy it online from canaryclub.org, it runs about 100 bucks or so. Dont let them give the blood test. It will give a false 'ok' reading and then you are stuck with them stating you have no issue.
You can go to an adrenal support yahoo group online. ( ____@____.com ) and they can decipher the saliva test and help you The moderators are very versed in the whole issue. But please dont try to give out the hormone pills without guidance. Again it is tricky and the hormones control the LIFE of the body. Over hormone supplementation will come with extreme opposite symptoms and problems.

By the way, antibiotics suppress the adrenal gland, so they exacerbate the whole issue. Antibiotic overuse has contributed to adrenal disease of epidemic proportions.

Be well,.
Gail

Oh yes, ear infections can be caused by food intolerances. That's not the ONLY cause, but it's worth checking into just in case. I get an ear infection if I eat a food I'm allergic to. It's like clockwork! I've been that way my whole life.

It's impossible to know what food without getting tested by a doctor, but you can try eliminating the most common intolerated foods one by one (you have to go one-by-one to figure out which one). I'd say the most common cause is milk. Next on the list are eggs, wheat, gluten and nuts.

I would definitely suggest going to a chiro or an alternative medicine doctor. I would NOT go eliminating foods without either researching what to substitute in or talking to a knowledgeable professional. There are some great books out there on how to do the elimination diet. Milk, for example, goes by many names in products and you need to know what they are when you read the ingredients. Also, your children will need extra calcium if you eliminate milk.

I also have a great cookbook called "What's To Eat? The Milk-free, Egg-free, Nut-free Food Allergy Cookbook" by Linda Marienhoff Coss. Some great delicious recipies!

Good luck! It can be a long road, but definitely worth it when you find the offending food. Your children will be so much healthier--you will see a difference!

We have never seen a chiropractor but I have heard other moms suggest it.

We discovered this issue in a round-a-bout way. We were trying to figure out why my younger child's immune system was so weak (it was terrible). I spent about 10 hours with a nutritionist (because my child's diet was so limited - she just happened to be "holistic" minded), and then we went to an integrative doctor (an MD) and later switiched to another integrative MD closer to where we live. We gained lots of traction with son's health, and we noticed lots of issues just really minimize or disappear altogether. As I mentioned on another post, when we cut gluten the ear wax disappeared. When he eats it now (traveling or at a party) it shows up again almost immediately.

Anyway, after years of trotting to the mainstream ped (highly qualified) and never really getting anywhere with our child's health we just decided to go a different direction. Thank God. It has completely changed the way I look at our entire family's health issues. Food sensitivites and environmental toxins play a major role in how we all feel and function. Seeing is believing.

Ironically this child has had maybe one ear infection in his entire life (but enough wax for a candle factory). Of all his health struggles, ear infections haven't been one of them (and you would think they would be).

My older son had a ton of ear infections (he was close to gettig tubes as a toddler) and we later discovered (in his teens) that he is sensitive to gluten too. I'm sure that didn't help him when he was little.

The usual offenders for us are gluten (wheat, rye, barley), dairy, eggs and chicken (frustrating). We try to avoid highly processed food period.

You may want to work with a nutritionist to learn how to prepare meals that don't rely on all that stuff and that meet nutritional requirements for children. Be forewarned - they are not all created equal.

Good luck, and keep digging for answers.

Hi D.,

I took my kids to the Chiropractor when they were little before going they had ear infections all the time but after they rarely got sick. I also ended up working for a Chiropractor too. Look for a Chiropractor that practices with the Full Spin Logan. My Chiropractor was the best he said try Chiropractic first then if that doesn't work go to traditional treatments such as medicine or surgery ect. Some will tell you the only thing that will help is Chiropractic if they say that then find another one. Ask Mom's in your Area if mine was still alive I would ask him to recommend someone in your area. Good Luck if you stick with it you will see results. I even went for cramps and the adjustments helped.

You basically have to treat it as an unknown allergy. Start from scratch.
Go to feingold.org or adhddiet.com and they have a very specific way of handling this. Yes, you have to buy into their program, but this is something that has helped my kids immensely. I recommend it whenever I can.

I would start with a few key allergens- dairy and wheat. Eliminate those completely from the diet foe at least 2 weeks. Keep a food diary and write down what they eat, how they feel and any sort of symptom that seems pertinent- stuff nose, ear pain, agressiveness, those sorts of things.

Good Luck

I've taken my son to the chiropractor since he was about 7 or 8 months old. The ear infections decreased dramatically. I think he's had one since then, and he's now 3 and 1/2 years old. I'm pregnant with my second child now, and I plan to take the new baby to the chiro immediately, before getting any ear infections.

I use Sugar Mill Chiropractic in Sugar Land. Phone # is ###-###-####. They treat anyone under the age of 5 for FREE, so it's worth a visit.

Reading this post, makes me feel I am not alone!
For 3 months my son has had ear infections/fluid off and on. 2 rounds of antibiotics. I took him to a chiropractor, and she said to try to get off milk completely..however, during Christmas with an 8 year old..it is impossible!
So, here we ago again. I have tried this many times, however as one of the replies below said; we really need a nutritionist to walk us through it, because it can get so confusing! Gluten and dairy free seemed to help his concentration so much, however then I wasn't sure if it it was one or the other..so quit them both! ARGH.
NOW, tommorow :-) We are starting completely from scratch again.
This time, dairy free/will journal it. If that doesn't work, we will try gluten.
I would also love to have a complete allergy panel done, to save me time!!
It seems to be a LOOOONG process and not easy if you are alone.
I have got discouraged, because it's not easy with all the foods and trying to pinpoint. Going to make an appt. with an allergist this week.

Anyhow, you are not alone :-)
I will create a post so we can get some answers, on what type of chiropractic they did for an adjustment, because mine didn't pop the neck or head and I would like to know. They did lightly adjust his back...
