Hi Mommas,
My son had tubes put in his ears at 1 year of age and my ENT is recommending that now a year later we put in a new second set because the first set is not working anymore. Has anyone else had to put in a second set of tubes? My ENT says that my son is not hearing properly, which is why he is recommending the second set. Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

Both of my kids have had ear tubes. My daughter ended up having to have a skin graft done on her left ear due to the hole closing up then she got ear tubes replaced for the second time. The second set of ear tubes are working great for her now.

We've had two sets of tubes with our 20 mo. old. Our doctor explained that sometimes the tubes develop a film on them that breeds bacteria so it can actually perpetuate the problem. I agree with the other mother that mentioned adenoids. Talk to your doctor about removing the adenoids as well. The adenoids often cause a lot of problems. Good luck!

Hi E.,

Multiple sets of tubes are common for children. I would recommend that you look for the cause of these problems. I strongly recommend speaking to Dr. Davis at Davis Wellness Center http://www.daviswellnesscenter.com/ he has been wonderful at helping me with allergies that I wasn't aware of!

They are wonderful there and work very well with children! He is worth every penny!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck!

My daughter had her first set placed in at age 1 and another set of tubes at age 2. She had the second pair of tubes put in because she was still getting nasty ear infections right after the fist ones fell out. She is now 3.5 yrs and her ears are fine, as is her hearing/speech. Did you have your son's hearing tested? I think it is not out of the ordinary for children to get tubes more than once if they need them.

My son had his first set when he was 10 months. They fell out after 8 months and he got an ear infection. So our ENT suggested we put in a second set and have his adenoids removed. He was around 20 months old when they did the surgery and it worked great. After having them in for 6 months he got yet another ear infection so the ENT suggested we remove the tubes. They caused the ear infection because they were no longer working. Once removed the ENT told us all looked well and he would not need anything else done. We have not had any problems for the past four months. Our ENT told us when you put in tubes in at such a young age you will probably have to do it twice. Usually most kids tubes will fix themeselves over time (usually after age 2). You might ask about removing his adenoids sometimes this helps.
