Sometimes, infections develop. Little children can accidentally pull out loop earrings (getting them caught or pulled) and studs can be uncomfortable to sleep on. If it were me, let her get older and "want" to do it... then it can be a big deal and she can look forward to it. It's her body, too... might want to let it be her choice to put holes in her skin! You like the idea of earrings... what if she doesn't?

At least wait until she's rolling over on her own so she can move her head if the earrings bother her while she's sleeping

I'm on team "wait until she asks for it". That is way too young. Our 5 year old has had them a year, and cleans them on her own and understand the importance of taking care of them. Your precious baby girl could end up with bloody, pus draining, holes in her ears. How cute would that be?

I personally look at it as.......... It is your daughter's body... not yours. She is not your possession.

Like another poster said.... just because you can get piercings, would you tattoo her too?

I also dislike seeing earrings on very small, young children. They grow up way too fast. My now 16 yr old got her ears pierced when she asked for them.

I think it is so tacky to see baby's ear's pierced. I have three girls. I will let them decide when they want to put holes in their body. You wouldn't get your baby a tatoo so why pierce their body? My older two girls were both six when they decided they wanted their ears pierced. It was like a rite of passage. They were both very excited and they were shown how to clean them at home which they both took care of very well. We also made it a girls day out on the day of the piercing. I took them to lunch and we went shopping. It was a great mother-daughter bonding time and something they will always remember and it was a special time. Wait until your daughter is older. They grow up fast enough already.

Ditto to all the Mom's that said WAIT.
You need to ask yourself "why" you want the ears pierced. WHY? Because it looks cute? She already is beautiful. It's not necessary.

And the points the other mom's made about infections and allergic reactions are EXCELLENT. No one in my family has allergic reactions except my sister who can barely wear anything that she doesn't react to. You don't want to risk that with an infant.

Although she will forget the pain, it does hurt. I can barely handle vaccines, I can't imagine putting my child through anything that is painful and not necessary.

Sorry, jewelry on children is very cute but it is an "ACCESSORY". Buy her a cute bracelet or something. Let her decide when she wants earrings.
Good luck M.. Just my two cents :)

To me there are NO Pros about babies with pierced ears.
Why can the parents decide to have a few holes punched in a babies' ears???
To me, this makes no sense.

I have 4 sisters. All 5 of us got to have our ears pierced on our 13th bday.
It was a special trip out mom and new teenage daughter for piercing and earring shopping.
I will remember it forever.

Also, my parents wanted to make sure WE would take care of our ears.
Most of us did, but one sister did get an infected ear b/c she thought cleaning them every day was "stupid." Was a good life lesson on personal hygiene and responsibility. Teens need that lesson every once in a while.

Edit: just read more answers. I think babies are beautiful just as they are!!! The comments that the earrings on babies makes them look so cute or adorable is beyond my comprehension.

I had my 3rd daughter's ears pierced when she was quite young, and I wish I wouldn't have. I never really believed in piercing little one's ears (just my personal opinion), but my 3rd kiddo was constantly called a boy - even when I would have her in a pink dress, people would ask "what's his name?" She was TOTALLY BALD until she was two :) Anyways, she had alot of allergies and skin issues that didn't show up until she was a little older, but were fired off (not caused by, of course) by getting her ears pierced. Turns out she was allergic to most metals, her ears were constantly infected and itched, etc. etc. Like I said, the piercing didn't cause any of the allergies, she was just too young to know she would even have allergies.

She is 13 now, and we did have her ears re-pierced when she was older and while they are very high maintenance, she is able to care for them herself. If I could do it over again, I would have waited :)

Just my two cents! Have a great day :)

I had both my older daughter's ears pierced around 5 months and it was great. They don't touch them much so there's little risk of infection. Just keep them clean with a salt water solution and make sure to clean and 'twirl' the eraings a few times a day. Also, I wouldn't change the eraings for a good 3 months, just to be really sure they've healed.

One thing I would recommend is getting both ears done at the same time (if possible) and using emla cream to numb the ears a little. I did and neither of my girls cried at all; they just startled a little from the sound.

Go for it! It's super cute, and if they don't want to wear it when they are older, they can take it out. No big deal. It's easier to do when they are a baby than when they are older, because they don't have any concept of 'oh jeeze, this is gonna hurt...' I had my ears pierced when I was 6 months old. I pierced my DD's at 8 months, and she had NO issues at all. I had one lady on each side, and they pierced at the same time. She sat there for a second, then started to cry but stopped as soon as I gave her her 'lovey'. It doesn't hurt them any more than getting a shot at the doctor's office. My cousin pierced her DD's at 3 months, and had no issues. At 4 months she will be too young to know how to mess with her ears. The main thing is just to keep them cleaned (which is easy, just a couple drops of the solution you get 3x a day, and twist the earring when you do it.) My DD's have safety backs, so they don't even poke her or anything.

Not all ear-piercing operations have the proper equipment or staff trained to work specifically with young children. For example, ear piercing guns cannot be sterilized, which means that it's possible to contract hepatitis or some other infection from them. If you're set on having your baby's ears pierced, it's probably safer to ask your pediatrician if she'll do it for you with a needle. And here's what else you should know before having the procedure done:

Ear piercing is usually done without painkillers because the piercing itself hurts less than a shot of anesthetic would. (You can give your baby a dose of infants' acetaminophen or ibuprofen before the procedure if you want.)

Another thing to remember is that your child will be constantly touching her ears and the pierced area can easily become infected. To help guard against this, you'll need to clean the posts and the area around the ear with alcohol or hydrogen peroxide several times a day (or as often as your doctor recommends). Watch for increased redness or tenderness around the piercing hole and on the earlobe that could indicate infection.

There's also a chance that your child will have an allergic reaction to metals after getting her ears pierced. If she develops a rash around the piercing, you'll need to take the earrings out. To avoid this, you can try to make sure that the parts of the earrings that touch her ear are made of surgical steel or 14 karat gold. (This includes not only the posts but the backs as well.) If the rash doesn't subside, your child will probably not be able to wear earrings.

We are getting our 11 months old done tomorrow. There are a lot of different opinions on this but i say give it a try. I am all for it and everyone i know who has done it has had no problems. One lady even said if someone says i shouldnt do it because it is painful and they dont have a choice tell them that a circumcission is painful and they dont have a choice either but it still gets done. Your baby wont remember it and wont be wearing dangly earings for awhile so you dont have to worry about her pulling them out. I figure if we do this and she bothers them to much or really does not like them we can take them out. Have fun if you decide to do it. I think they are so pretty on babies.

For me, there are no cons about it, is a cultural thing, I am from Mexico and over there we pierce the ears when they are born, actually they come out of the hospital with ears pierced.

Here I could not do that with my girl, but as soon as the doctor would do it, we did, that was at one month old.

You will have to take care of the wounds, just a little bit of alcohol to make sure they don't get infected and moving (turning) the earings from time to time, so they don't get "glued" to the ear.

I would go to a piercer, like a body piercer. The noise of the gun usually makes them cry and hurts more. Body piercer is quick and the pain is quickly forgotten...and to all the 'wait til they ask for it' I hope your boys arent circumsized, its not necessary either and is an option in the hospital, perhaps you should wait til they ask for that too!

I've heard many people say they won't get them done at a young age, because their earlobes always grow and the smaller you do it the more of a chance they can be lopsided.

I've also heard from others that it's good to get them done at a young age, because the baby won't tend to fuss with them.

My daughter is almost 2 and I am still considering it. But, for me...I'm to chicken$hit to get them done. I think it'll hurt me more then her lol.

Sorry, I didn't answer your question fully. But that are the pros and cons I heard :)

PROS: She won't remember it and she's too young to fool with them. I pierced my 7 years olds ears when she was 9 months and it was a PAIN because she kept playing with them! My 5 year old got hers pierced when she was 3 months and I had NO problems whatsoever. Just know that baby will be a bit fussy that first day or 2 (especially around nap time), but a little motrin helps. It's a lot of work to clean them for that first week and turn them, but overall it was pretty low maintenance, twice :)
