Ear Infections Linked to Toddler Seizures?!

I have a 3 year old very precious son who has autism. He also has chronic ear infections. Hes gotten ear infections since he was 1 year old. He is nonverbal and has a high pain threshold...so he is not able to tell me when his ears hurt. The only way we know is if he's got one is if he picks at his ears too much during the day. He got his first seizure in the fist week of sept. 2012 and I found him in his toddler bed in the morning at around 6am very hot and limp he had a fever over102 degrees. It was a very scary sight and at the er room the doc said it was a febrile seizure that is common in Toddlers when they get high sudden fevers and normally stop occurring at the age of 5. He was watched over in the er for three hours and given an RX for Amoxoxilin for the ear infection they found then discharged w the warning that it may occur again but chances were very slim and just to treat the first sight of a fever with Motrin so that he doesn't get another one. We went home thinking everything would be ok per doctor at er. Well two weeks later the second one came it was around the same time 630am I walked into his room as usually he's up and running around by that time but sadly he was seizing bad he had convulsions all over his body and was hot to the touch again. They lasted 30 minutes and he had to be taken to a children's hospital for two nights. They did medicae him and also induced a coma to help him rest his brain and testings. They ran all sorts of tests and found he did also have an ear infection this time but no abnormal results in any tests. Neuro saw him the day before discharge and gave us Diazepam(valium) for the next time it happened. He was weak for days after and still on hospitals meds that hadn't worn off. He ended up getting better and then again third time was in Nov. 2012 ear infection fever and seizure only on righ hand side of body this time same time around 630am... Wasn't 30minutes this time as diazepam was rectally injected and stopped it at 10minutes...still long. Was watched at doc then discharged w ear infection and fever again they still say febrile seizure...not so sure they last this long:(. The last one he's had was in dec 14 2012 again in his bed early morning only left side this time seizing up BUT no fever this time...this one lasted 7minutes. Neuro saw him at hospital and said not normal for febrile seizure that has to be a fever involved. The next time w no fever will start him on meds, I'm scared for him either way as if I do put him on daily meds will make him zombie like and not present also very angry and behavioral.and if I don't and it lasts longer than five minutes can risk brain damage rare but still a risk that's scary...

I want to know if there are any moms out there who have found that with ear infections seizures come?....please advise thank you

No, I have not heard of ear infections causing seizures, but I would guess that the ear infection causes the immune system to be weakened. I would think illness could make a child more susceptible to seizing if they are prone to seizures.

I understand how scary this is for you. I went through a similar thing with my son. Many children (and even adults) outgrow seizures so please do not give up even if your child goes on meds. Just do your research about the meds so that you can make an educated decision about which one and the dosage. Not all of them will make him sleepy. I would ask you to accept that much is out of your control so just take one day at a time.

My son was on medication from age 4 to 9, went off and was seizure free for almost 10 years but is back on meds again. The medication can deplete vitamin B6, which caused my son to be irritable. Once we learned this he began on a B-Complex at the appropriate dose and he is just fine! Would I rather he be off meds. OF COURSE, but that is not an option right now. I am trying to tell you...... just educate yourself and make the best decisions you can while knowing you cannot control the situation. Be positive. My son is fine and it is my great hope yours will be too!

I have a friend with a child with CP and he doesn't really tell them he is hurting either. He has had febrile seizures many times then stopped for several years then started them again at puberty. He was on daily meds then off for years and back on. They hate to medicate him, also. But the thought of more brain damage is way too scary. Sorry but the options are just the best of two evils.
He doesn't behave as well on them and doesn't learn as well. We went over there on New Years and he had had a grand mal that morning which stopped with meds under his tongue but they were sad because his med will be upped again.
All I can tell you is let everybody know to be very alert to his behavior and alert to signs of fever and illness. Every time you think he might be sick take him to be looked at. Their son has strep a lot so they make the doc do a strep test almost every time they go.
Hope you find answers.

My youngest has only had one febrile seizure and it was due to an ear infection. My pediatrician said to give him Motrin at the first sign of illness or fever to try and prevent it from happening.

Fevers often come with any type of infection because its the body's way of fighting the infection. So that's why it would happen. Please take your child to a chiropractor that works with kids for the ear infections and keep them off of dairy products!

This happened to a few people I know, all their kids had autism as well. Sometimes it was just sudden fever no ear infection, sometimes only ear infection only, but if it wasn't those two their adenoids or tonsils were swollen. They haven't had seizures in a while now so maybe just a season? I would suggest seeing an ear nose throat doctor just to see their opinion, and more research!

My daughter had what they called a febrile seizure. She had no fever at the time, but they said because she had a fever the week before, it was caused by the fever coming down.

Have you thought about getting tubes in his ears? Maybe if you could find a solution to the recurring ear infections, the fevers (and seizures) would stop. Maybe an ENT would be willing to place tubes in his ears which would allow them to drain so he wouldn't get the infections/fevers.

I have heard that autism, ear infections, and seizures are all related.

A friend's daughter last year had a couple of sinus infections, and an ear infection at the same time and she started having seizures.
It took them a while but they figured out she had all that at one time that it was causing her to have the seizures.
Got rid of all of them and the seizures were gone.

For me, I heard that the seizures can come with the high fever. If they are dehydrated, the seizure may come sooner than not at all.

Have you ever had him tested for environmental or food allergies? My son was 11m old when he got an ear infection the first time accompanied with a high fever of 102+. Took him to the dr. they gave hime amox. Took him home, realized he is allergic to penecilin. :(

Every 3 weeks for a year and a half he would get an ear infection and high fever of 103+. I was in the doctor's office so often, I called our room 'our wing'. Each time the doctors said it was just a virus. I could tell you how my week would go to the minute. I was up all day with him, and then working from home at night since he couldn't go to daycare for a whole week at a time (the whole fever free for 24h rule).

Finally one week his symptoms changed and were closer together. Then he broke out in hives. I had been keeping a food journal trying to figure out what was going on. I took him to the allergist and asked that he be tested for my top two culprits - pears and peaches. As soon as they gave him the pears test the spot swelled up! Turned out the daycare had served pears every other Wed. So he would get sick, get on meds that lasted 10 days, go back to school for 2 days, eat food that had touched pears and get sick again..

We removed pears and pear juice from his diet, and the ear infections stopped. It has been 8 years and he has only had maybe 3 ear infections since then.

Just a thought.
