Ear Infection and Water?

My 27 month old son has had about 4 or 5 ear infections in the past year and the doctor mentioned tubes the other day when we went in for more antibiotics. My husband asked (after the fact of course) if the fact that he often takes showers and likes to play at splash pads might be causing them. We had just been to a splashpad the day before he started having symptoms. Any thoughts? I have also been looking through the archives and seen moms recommend chiropractors. I would rather go that route than tubes in his ears but am curious how I would find one that would be knowledgeable working with children. Thanks.

At the first signs of an ear infection, I just heat a couple whole garlic cloves in some extra-virgin olive oil. I allow it to cool to body temp and then place a couple of drops in my daughter's ears every couple of hours. It has worked with my 3 girls every time. You might want to give it a try. As the first person said, I think they also sell ready-made drops at some health-food stores. Hope this helps.

Where are you located? I work for a female chiropractor here in Phoenix, that is very good with kids and happens to know alot about kids getting ear infections as well. She is a mom with 3 grown children of her own. I take both of my kids in and they beg to get adjusted! Here is our website

Leftover water in ears can be a cause of problems (I have had swimmer's ear once...miserable). There are alcohol-like drops that can dry out the water..at about any pharmacy.
Does your son use a sippy that require lots of suction to get liquid out? that can contribute to problems. I got some Born Free sippies and they do not require lots of pull to drink from...they do dribble more though. It's a trade off.

Now I have no real information about the water thing, but I did go through the tubes thing with my daughter when she was 2. She has a ridiculous high tollerance for pain so I never knew she had an ear infection until she spiked a 103 fever. They started to get so frequent that she was not acquiring language and even started to speak like a deaf person would. She had sleep apnia because of the infections and the fact that it had also affected her tonsils and adnoids. It was one of the scariest thing I have done as a mother, but after the tubes were in and the tonsils and adnoids were out, the infections and other problems ceased. She grew almost 3 inches in 3 months because she was sleeping properly again, she stopped snoring, and her language acquisition boomed. We didn't have to do anything special to take care of her tubes. She was able to bath like normal and even play in the pool. So, if it gets to that point, just be open minded about it. It's not the worst thing in the world and may make things a lot easier on you and your son in the end.

I highly recommend using garlic oil drops in his ears at the first twinge of pain. I'm not sure if it works for swimmer's ear, but it would be worth a try because it works beautifully on regular ear infections. My kids used to get ear infections easily, but they have not been to the doctor once for antibiotics since we started using garlic oil in their ears. I put the drops in their ears every few hours for a day, and the symptoms are gone by the end of the day. It is inexpensive and easy and can be found at natural food stores (Sprouts, Whole Foods, etc).

Just my 2 cents. :) Good luck!
