Ear Infection and Possible UTI

Hey Mommies, we took my 3 year old daughter into urgent care today. She woke up this morning with a 102.8 fever. She took motrin and it went down, but by 11:00 it was back up to 103. By that time she was also vomiting and I couldn't really get her to take any tylenol or motrin to get the temp back down. She chewed up a tylenol tablet but it came right back up. I finally was able to get her to just suck on one and she got about 1/2 a tablet down (dosage should have been 2 tablets) She also has been very lethargic and has slept all day. Urgent Care found that she had an ear infection for sure. Here's where I'm concerned. Lately she's been having accidents. I've just chalked it up to behavioral problems and treating it as such. She also will complain that she's "spicy" down there, but she doesn't always tell us when she has to poop and will wipe herself. So, I just assumed she wasn't wipping well, would clean her and be done with it. On the way to Urgent Care she started complaining that hertummy hurt. Then, right before the Dr. came in she went potty and was "spicy" again. I told the Dr. and she prescribed an antibiotic that would treat an ear infection and UTI if she has one,but we never did a test to be sure. My concern is, she threw up her medicine, her temp is still high, and I can't get her to take anything. She is finally drnking sips of water and cranberry juice, but I don't know how long it will stay down. She's swallowing a lot and acting like she has to throw up but won't let herself. My gut tells me it's a serious UTI, but how long do I wait before taking her in? I've read if it gets bad enough she'll need IV med's. I don't want to wait until she's in really bad shape, and she's aready miserable. Any suggestions would be GREAT!

So What Happened?

Thanks so much ladies!! I finally got her to take 1 whole tylenol pill - she just sucked on it like candy - and it's really brought the temp down. She's keeping small sips in her, and was able to eat a freezie pop. Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll probably try mixing the antibiotics with some water next time to make it easier for her to take, and intend to call the ped and follow up with them on Monday. Luckily ours has weekend hours, so if we can make it through tonight I can take her in tomorrow. But, with the fever down she does seem to be doing MUCH better. Thanks again ladies!!

Have a urine sample taken to check what type of infection. My dd spent 4 days in the hospital on IV antibiotics with similar symptoms, she was much younger and couldn't tell me that it hurt to pee so her infection turned into a kidney infection.

So sorry. I think that the antibiotics will help her but you need to first get her comfortable in order to keep them down. Are you comfortable with using Tylenol suppositories? I would try them and then a tepid bath as someone else recommended. Also really keep on top of the dosing so that they over lap with the meds for fever. Maybe an hour before it's due. Also I've switched using Tylenol and the Motrin for the next dose, switch from one to the other until the fever is more under control. Motrin lasts longer than the Tylenol. Have her lie down and apply a cool wet washcloth on her face and even her body if she will allow it. Also dress her in very loose somewhat cool clothing and don't over cover her, maybe a fan on low wouldn't be a bad idea as to keep the air circulating in her room. I think that it may be a long night for you all but if you can get on top of the fever she'll feel better and keep the meds down. I also recommend that you give her small doses stretched out over time with her antibiotics.
If it seems that nothing is working and the fever continues and you can't get it under control and she also starts to vomit then I would probably really consider seeing a doctor again for concern of her becoming dehydrated.
Best Regards and hope she gets better soon,
C.

Walgreens has a UTI test kit sold over the counter. You could buy one and test her urine, just for peace of mind. It's sold by the "female products".

I would get the freezies' out and give them to her. The coldness should help with her temp. As for the UTI I am sure that the Dr. will send her to a specialist who deals with this. I would also try Tempra in liquid form, I know that she would have to take more but if it works for her because of the taste it would be worth it. Temps' usually go up towards the evening. Keep a cold cloth around and when bathing, bath in tepid water. Not hot or cold.
I wish you lots of luck and I will be thinking of you and your little one. Take care!!

You could take her back to urgent care and get the anti biotics in a shot too. They can give you some supositories to keep her from vomiting. Some kids vomit when they get fevers, and we had to keep pherenagin on hand just in case or we could not keep any meds in her. You can also ask the pharmacist for tylenol supositories, they are sold over the counter. If you can get her fever down, she might hold down the meds too.

If she seems dehydrated, take her to the ER and they will get her well enough to keep the meds down.

If she can' t tolerate medicine by mouth, she needs to be re-evaluated. The only way to know for sure that she has a UTI is to obtain a clean catch (or cath) sample for urinalysis and culture. If she has already taken the antibiotic, it may be difficult to evaluate her for a UTI, however. If she still has fever after taking the antibiotic for 48 hours or cannot keep it down, or if you are concerned she is getting dehydrated, she needs to be seen again. Hope this helps!

Sounds really bad :( so sorry! I say she needs a luke warm bath which is probably the same as a tepid bath, but either way it helps drop my girls temp! Try giving her antibiotic in little doses... with something like a sip of cool water in between! Or maybe try mixing like her tylonal with her water and having her drink it over 10 minutes... not much water what ever she can drink in a few minutes with out throwing up! I had to mis my youngests medicine in with some water this morning bc she kept spitting it out and it worked she chugged it down, She also spits up a lot, and then tonight she took it fine. If you can get the medicine in her (antibiotic and tylonal) for at least over the weekend she should be feeling better. Don't they make a kids antacid? Something like tums for kids that might help her little tummy (not sure just a suggestion). I hope she is feeling better soon, so sorry to hear she isn't feeling well!
