Hello everyone~ My son (21 months) was diagnosed with his first ear infection in October. Our pediatrician is very holistic, so on previous occasions when he's had colds, I used a garlic oil in his ears to prevent ear infections. It worked every time except this time. She said his ears showed signs of being infected for awhile, but I just wasn't aware of it. He had had a cold for a while, but I just didn't realize it was double ear infections! Anyway, the 1st round of antibiotic (amoxicillin) didn't work and he is now taking augmentin. He's on his 5th day now of the 10-day course, and still seems pretty sick. He has a great deal of mucus, is pale with dark circles under his eyes and was clammy with a little fever yesterday. Is this normal? Does the antibiotic need more time to kick in, or should I be calling the doctor again? Thanks in advance for your advice....

What can I do next?

If it were me, I would be calling the doctor again. Is he complaining of ear pain? His ears might be clearing up from the antibiotics, but he could be having a viral cold, and to which that, antibiotics will not make a difference. How is his fluid/food intake? Does he have any allergies?

Call the doctor. The ear infection could very well still be there. My son had two middle ear infections for 4 months. Antibiotics, shots you name it he still had them! Until we had tubes and adenoids:)
Ear infections are very painful and most colds back up into the ears and cause the infections. Please call the doctor

Call the doctor. I think your child may have a secondary infection and the antibiotic is not working.

Good for you for finding a holistic pediatrician; you rock! That said, my experience with antibiotics is that symptoms should clear up in 72 hours max, usually 48. I would definitely call the doc.

I had to go green in order to get the ear infections under control. 3 eartube surgeries before age 3 was just too much for us!

Have your Holistic Ped recommend a chiropractor. Mine (my chiropractor) can do adjustments to help the sinuses and ears drain. My daughter is 5 and has never needed antibiotics. I take her right in for an adjustment when she gets a runny nose or congestion.

Call the doctor again. It's Friday, and if you don't make contact today, you will have an on-call person for the weekend or have more trouble reaching your doc. It usually takes 72 hours for an antibiotic to truly make a difference, but maybe since he had the infection longer, it will take a bit more time. However, that's something for the doctor to look at.

We just finished our 4th ear infection in 1.5 years...Yes, I know the road we are heading down.....The last two times we had no luck with Amoxicillin and eventually weer given a 2nd round of antibiotics called, "Bactim" (sp?) which has shown to be effective. Having experienced this quite frequently, I have never had my DD impacted like that. We actually see an recognizeable change within 24-36 hours of her first doses of an antibiotic, not 5 days and getting worse. Sounds like there may be more to this than an ear infection. Watch the fever for another 24 hours and if no improvement, then I would def. call the dr. Hugs!
