Hi,
My 11 month old has her first ear infection. Can anyone tell me if it is true that once they get one they will get many ear infections? I keep hearing this.

Thanks,
Deb

That's not necessarily true at all. When I was little I had one ear infection and that's all I have ever had to this day, but on the otherhand my daughter had 20 in her first 2 1/2 years. It just depends on the child, but that's a good sign that she is that old and getting her first one. You will now know atleast the signs of them if she does get them again. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions!

I dont think that once they get one that they will get a lot. I have 2 boys and my oldest is 2 1/2 he got one when he was 4 months old and has never had one since and my youngest is 11 months old also. He got one at 8 months and has not gotten another one.

I don't believe that at all. my oldest is 5 and the only ear infection she had was at 23 months. my middle is 3 and she had one when she was 18 months but none since then and my youngest is 15 months and she had one when she was 6 months old and has not had another one. some kids are just prone to them more than others. i have a frind who smokes and her children get them all the time and another friend her children have allergies so they get them alot. so just because your child has one doesn't mean she'll get another.

D.- I have never heard such a thing- Is your daughter teething? It is really common for babies to deveop ear infections when they are teething because their adrenal glands swell and push up on their eustachian tube- thus causing fluid to pool in the ear and get infected. At 11 months old- she is probably getting ready to teethe or something of the like. Ear infections are very common and in fact the American Academy of Pediatrics says 87% of ear infections will go away on their own without anti-biotics; however, at 11 months- most peds still treat them. My 26 month old had 8 ear infections during his first year of life, and has only had 2 since he was 12 months old. And honestly- I don't recall ever meeting anyone whose kid had never had at least ONE ear infection in their life- they are incredibly common.

No where did you hear this because I have never heard this. It is true some kids are more prone to them than others. My son had his first ear infection at I believe 4 mos and is now 3 and has a toatl of 4 ear infections . And my daugter at 6 mos had a double ear infection and is two and just recently had a 2nd ear infection. I'd advise you to talk to you doctor about your concerns so they can better clarify it. Good Luck

Hi D., I struggled with cronic ear infections with both of my children. My first child having the infections worse and more frequently and all I can tell you is what my doctor told me. Little kids have ear canals that sit more horizonally than adult's ear canals(which sit at more of an angle) This causes the normal fluid in the ear to sit in the canal longer causing bacteria to develop. If this happens an ear infection can occur. Kid's ear canals start to grow more vertical by the time they are 2 yrs. old and the cronic ear infections will subside. It was true for me. By the time they got to be 2 yrs old they stopped having ear infections. My son had them so badly and so often that I thought we would have to put tubes in his ears but the infections stopped occuring when he turned two. He is now 6 and I can't remember the last time he had an ear infection.

I know my kids get them all the time! A little antibiotic and its gone. I'm not sure if they get them because they got them once, but they do get them often. Every time the season changes we are at the doctor with an ear infection. Its no big deal...my kids hardly notice them.

I have a 16month old boy and he got his first ear infection at around 6 months he had a ear infection every two months after that until he was 13 months, He hasn't had an ear infection since so I think it just depends on the kid. They said he might have to get tubes in his ears but he doesn't need them. His Dr. said his ears have cleared up and he is fine right now.

Hi, My 9 year old son had ear infections all the time in his first 2 years of life. I can't remember how many I just remember that if he got 1 more his doctor wanted to have tubes put in his ears. Looking back now, I think our biggest problem was they kept coming back due to not being completely cleared up when we treated them. After double treatment on his last ear infection with a recheck after treatment, he never got another one. Of my 3 kids he was the only one that ever have problems with ear infections and he is fine now.

I have never heard that rumor but my son started getting ear infections when he was 11 months old. After 8 infections in 6 months, he had to get tubes. That doesn't mean the rumor is true though because my best friend has a daughter the same age as my son, (who is now 22 months and has no ear problems whatsoever), who has only had about 3 ear infections in her life. I would just ask your doctor.

Not true. Some kids are more prone to ear infections than others, but just having one does not mean you are doomed to never-ending ear infections.

Hey D.,

Kids are more prone to ear infections primarily because of the structure of a child's ear. Here's a great article that explains a ton of information about kids ear infections and what remedies doctors are currently recommending:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16140545/

Kids don't necessarily get them constantly once they've had just one. My son had an ear infection when he was two and that's the only one he's ever had in his life.

hello D.,
i think all kids are different. my daughter will be 4 and she has only had one ear infection and my son is 2 1/2 and he has never had one at all. i was told once your child has one they will never go away. you just have to watch them make sure the infection is gone cover the ears up now more that its getting colder. good luck

I don't think it is true. I think there are *some* kids who have chronic ear infections and those are the ones you always hear about, thus making it seem true. My oldest son is 5 years old and had one ear infection around the same age as yours and has never had another one. My twins are now 2 1/2 and have each had one ear infection, some where around 1 year old and have never had another one either. So, I think it is just the child and the way their ears are shaped. But, if you do end up having several, they usually outgrow it around 2 or 3 when the eustasian tubes straighten, so it can't last forever :)

I've seen both.

My son (now 2 1/2) has had only one ear infection.
My daughter (16 months) has already had 3.

Based on my experience, I don't think you can predict whether or not it will be a recurring issue. I think it depends on the child more than anything else.

Good Luck,
P.

That is not always the case...my son around that age got a few in a row, then I worried every time he had a cold or anything, took him in to find out he was fine. He didn't pull at his ear or give any indication of having one which was part of my paranoia. He is 28 months now and has not had one for 16 months.
