Dyson Vs. Oreck

After only 3 years our cheesy $150 Eureka vacuum cleaner no longer sucks anything out of the carpet. We have a long haired cat so this is unacceptable. My husband and I are debating between a Dyson and an Oreck. Does anyone have any comparisons between the two or own either of these? If we're going to lay down the cash, I want to make sure it's a great vacuum that's going to last a while. Include model numbers if you can. Thanks!

I have the Dyson Animal and I love love love love looove it! I've owned it for nearly 2 years and it still works great. I did a lot of research prior to buying it and the only negative feedback I found was that it supposedly didn't work that great on bare floors unless you used the floor attachment (which it comes with); however, I have not found this to be a problem and I have a lot of hardwood. Good luck!

We have a Dyson Animal (the purple one) and really like it. As far as store-bought ones go, it's the one we liked best. We managed to use a 20% off coupon for Linens & Things several years ago before they quit accepting them for Dyson, so ours was only $400. It seems to do a great job at picking up the dog hair (we have a HAIRY golden retriever that I swear is part wookie)...when we get around to it, that is! :) I will say that we had a cleaning lady for a few months after my C-section, and she loves her Oreck. It was more basic, but she loved that it was light and compact.

We, too, had a Kirby demonstration at our house. I'm embarrased to say that as much as I love my Dyson, the Kirby put it to shame! But at $1100 (including the $500 Dyson trade in), I was not prepared to spend that much on a vacuum. If you can get a great deal on one, they are amazing machines.

Been hearing more negatives about the Dyson as they've been out longer now. But I also know Hoover has gone downhill, and I will not buy one again. A number of friend's have the Oreck and really like it. We're in the same boat as you...not sure what to get next, but our last Hoover has only lasted about 1 1/2 years! Wish I had bought the Oreck then, when I was thinking about it.

Not to rain on your Dyson parade, but I've read in consumer reports that they're not that great and that there's a hoover (I think) that does as well or better and is half the price. If you're really looking to spend big bucks on a vacuum, I'd look at a Kirby. They are amazing. I had a demo in my house last fall and there's still a clean spot on the floor where the sales rep had it on and didn't move it for maybe 10 seconds. They're hugely expensive, but you can get them on Ebay for about half-price, and it seems like they last forever. Happy cleaning!

We have a dyson as well. We love it! We bought it while living in a not-very-nice apartment and it actually made the carpet look better! It picks up the cat hair, my hair, and all kinds of dust, etc. We had a vacuum with Heppa by Hoover- it worked for a little while, then when the filter needed to be replaced-we couldn't find any. With the Dyson, you wash the filter and since the same kind of vacuum has been around for 14 years, I don't think we'll have a problem with parts since they don't change models every two weeks. You can get a pet model or just the DC14-the difference is an attachment that you can either order later or just skip all together-saves a bit of money.

Dyson all the way...we've had ours for a couple years and still love it. We have a DC14 animal-we have two shedding dogs and couldn't be happier. We purchased ours at best buy with a no interet equal payments for 6 months to soften the blow. You won't regret the money!

I don't know what kind of Eureka you have but I own TheBoss SmartVac and LOVE it! It was #1 on Consumer Reports.
I used both the Dyson and Oreck whe I worked at Curves and would not buy either. The Orecks were in need of constant repair; the owner replaced them with Dysons but they did not clean NEARLY as well as my SmartVac.

We have the purple one - the Dyson Animal. I'm really happy with it for the most part. I think I've had it about 9 months now? I purchased it at Bed Bath and Beyond and was able to use the 20% coupon they send in the mail. My ONLY complaint about it is that because our dog has such long hair, the hair gets caught in the brush and the belt mechanism. Every few weeks I have to take it apart and de-hair it. Other than that minor inconvenience, it works better than any other cheap vacuum cleaner I've tried over the years.
