Dust Ruffles

So I made my sons quilt for his crib before he was born (just barely) and it turned out pretty awsome. Now that hes almost 10 months old i would like to make him a dust ruffle. I want to make it a single box pleat or what i think is called a tailored dust ruffle. My question is when making the pleat do you need 2 times the length or just 1.5 times? I'm pretty new to sewing; just did what i remembered from girl scouts and 4-h many years ago. Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

post your question at a website called www.sewforum.com
there is an area specifically for sewing questions. I'm sure someone can easily answer your question there.

Also, it pretty much depends on what size pleat you want. (and from a mom who sews, don't put a whole lot of effort into this...relatively speaking, they are in a crib for such a short amount of time. My kids are now 5 and 7, having left the crib around 2-3 yrs old. I just made them gathered dust ruffles...and actually for their rooms I just made gathered curtain toppers and attached them with velcro to the crib).

I have absolutely no advice because I do not have a clue how to sew (I wish I did). I just wanted to say how impressed I am that you are "new to sewing" and have made a quilt and are attempting to make a dust ruffle. Very impressive. :)

if is more straight with a few folds then 1.5 times would be fine but if you are going to fold over alot or ruffle it you may want to go more. It really depends on what it is going to look like and that can be a million different ways. When you go to buy your material, look at the back of a pattern that looks similar to the one that you want to make (assuming you are not using a pattern) and see what they allow.

I don't have any advice on the sewing part either, but just a word of advice on dust ruffles...I had one on my daughter's crib and in the fall when it starts to get cold and the bugs come inside, I found a HUGE wolf spider in her crib with her! Yes I freaked! She was ok, but it was recommened to me not to use a dust ruffle. But since you are making your own you can control the length and might not let it touch the ground! Good luck with your project!
