So What Happened?

Thanks! I am hoping I can convince dh to let me get her one. That is the only thing she is asking besides a good xmas with her family. :)

My son was 7 when I finally gave in and got him his. Although from the time he was 3 he had the Leap Frog Leapster and he never put that down. My daughter was 2 at that time I passed down the Leapster to her. She now has the ds more than my son does and she is now 4. Needless to say that she is getting her own from "Santa" this year. There are games that are educational and easy for them to learn quickly. She always plays my sons Mario Kart and loves it even though she never finishes a race.

Depends on what your lifestyle is like, I do not plan on getting my kids DS's... ever really - but I suppose that could change. I have 6 and almost 5 year old boys and an almost 3 year old girl.

My nephews both have DS's (my brothers son and my SIL's oldest). They both love them... but they also spend (IMO) a ton of time either wanting to play the DS, or playing the DS, or trying to get to be able to play the DS. My SIL says that she prefers to not let her son have his DS because when he does it's all he wants to do. When he doesn't have it, he reads, colors, draws, makes stuff, and plays (like a regular kid).

I prefer to really limit our media time. We give 15 minutes of computer, and TV time only occasionally, with a max of about an hour when we do.

I know lots of kids have them, but it's just not for us.

Yes, we just bought our 6 year old daughter the 3DS that's on her Christmas wish list. My husband has the DSLite and my daughter plays that as much, if not more, than he does. She really wanted the DSiXL last year for Christmas but I felt she was too young at that time. I was still on the fence about getting her the 3DS this year for Christmas but after much thought and research we've decided she's ready for one. I did talk with her ped and my eye doctor at recent appts that we've had and they both agreed that the DS's are fine for her age (they both have children of similar ages who have their own DS's as well) as long as she's not playing on it for long, extended periods of time - but that's the same for anything electronic (TV, computer, etc).

Yup! Though I would go with the 3DS. Even the DS costs bank and will be obsolete in a year or so. They really do have brain games that can be played on them.

We are upgrading our DSIs to 3DS this Christmas.

Oh and thank you for using the proper usage for DS, darling son my butt! :p

Yes - I'm getting my 7yr old daughter and 9 yr old son DSI XL for Christmas. My son has been asking for years! We limit the time to a few hours on the weekends only. However, we plan to go on a cross country RV trip this next summer, so I plan on them being my "sanity saver" for the trip!!!! Everyone will be happy!

My son got one last year and he was only 4.5 and now it's lifesaver at the store or in the car or dr office. That's really the only times he plays. I personally wouldn't the 3ds the screen is really small and it hurt my eyes, and there's a reason nintendo dropped the price so much. They aren't even reccomended for smaller kids. If your going to spend the $ I would go with the DSi xl, that's what my son has.

What's a DS? Sounds like some kind of video-gaming system. What are your pros and cons?

Yes! It will be the best gift you ever buy! Great for the car, and anywhere that you need them to be quiet. It will come with Super Mario Bros, which is the best game of them all for that age.

My 6 yr old and 3 year old have had theirs for 1 year, and they play it daily. It''s not a gift that gets played for a month then put in a drawer.

Of course!!! They are the THE BEST! With bajillions of games for all ages and levels. Totally an endless supply. And you can buy them pre-owned at the game stores for super cheap! My daughter got the DS Lite from Santa when she was 5. This year, Santa is bringing her (8yrs old) and my son (5 1/2yrs old) the Nintendo 3DS (with the fabulous indestructable Nerf cases!).

I'm thinking about getting my 4 year old one! He plays on mine all the time, so the battery is always dead when i go to use it!! And there are some good educational games out there, so they can learn and have fun at the same time!

Depends on if you let your kid play video games all the time. The DS can be manuevered by even and 3 -4 yo, depending on the game, but its ideal for 6+. If your kid knows his way around video game controls, then he/she will be able to figuer out how to use a DS
