Dry Skin and Acne on Six Year Old

I'm about to do a search on this but thought I'd throw it out to see if any moms had insight on this. My six year old has had issues with dryness on his face...his forehead, between his eyes along his nose and his chin. It seemed better a few months ago, but now he's developed "pimples" on his chin. He's pretty young, but its definitely a white head. If anyone has insights I'd appreciate a path to start investigating what's going on with him. Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks to all! The comments on Eczema reminded me of something I read about vitamin B deficiency and I had been forgetting to buy a new container of multi vitamins. We started this and almost overnight the dryness and acne disappeared. All suggestions were good and I'll refer back to them...Thanks again!

I know this a little late coming but I just got back online and wanted to tell you what will work. I use Renew Intensive Skin Therapy from Melaleuca, Inc. (www.melaleuca.com) on my kids. It has gotten rid of my own eczema as well as theirs. They have great skin because this lotion really heals and promotes health. I have tried other lotions that didn't work. This is amazing stuff and the only thing I would ever use.

Good luck,
J.

Does he have any food allergies or senisitivities? I would look into that, maybe have him tested.

My son had dry patches on his cheeks, usually in the shape of a circle, but not like ringworm. Our doctor said it was a fungus. He said it is very common and to mix cortisone cream and athletes foot cream and the two together made it go away. You might ask your doctor about it. They have to look at it with a black light and if it is orange it is a fungus.

It sounds like he might need a facial cleanser and/or moisturizer that is oil & alcohol free. Although they aren't as easy to find as you might think Neutrogena makes some great ones. My two children (girl 16yr & boy 20yr) and I all use the "Alcohol-Free Toner" by Neutrogena. I also use "Oil-Free Moisture" by Neutrogena which has spf 15 in it as well. When both of my kids began getting acne I told them to clean their faces every morning and every night with the "toner" and it wasn't long until their complexions cleared up. We also use a facial soap in the shower. Regular soap will dry your skin. This was the most effective and inexpensive solution for us. I sure hope this helps. I know how frustrating things like this tend to be. God bless!

At this age, the dryness is very often an allergy or ezcema. You can treat topically, but will get very little result if any. My suggestion is to look into what is actually causing the dryness, and address that. It is very common and simple to address, and if treated now, can save your son from many other complications later. I'd love to send you some free info & solutions. Start your search with eczema. My son developed it a couple of years ago and it comes and goes with him. It is most of the time worse for him in the winter, but your son could have a worse case. If it is, get a good lotion for him and keep it on his little face. Also, oatmeal in a stocking in the bath helps and he can rub it on his face and body. Best wishes to you.

My little girl has eczema caused by allergies by contact. What worked wonders for her was taking away all fragrances from washing detergent and shampoo/soaps. Then, throughout the day giving a good rub-down with Cetaphil lotion. Just to make sure it isn't an allergy to dyes or artificial flavors, I would make sure he doesn't get any colored or artificial food. They aren't good for him anyway. I would say if there is no improvement after a week of this, take him to a dermatologist. Good Luck, I hope all goes well!

Hi L.,
My son had always had dry skin when he was younger. We never had a routine of putting lotion on his face. He has very light skin, so he is a bit sensitive also. I purchased him some moisturizer and taught him to use it twice a day, after washing his face properly. Although he does still have one or two of those little bumps on his cheeks, you can hardly see them unless you are close up. His dry skin has completely healed. Teach him good face washing habits followed by some moisturizer, and he will be just fine.

It definitely sounds like a skin condition like eczema some other type of dermatitis. Eczema on a face can sometimes look like dry flaky skin, not the typical itchy red bumps. I knwo that is how mine is. Or it could be a skin allergy. Maybe change soaps or shampoo. Johnson & Johnson shampoo is not just for babies. For the soap try Dove or an all natural hypoallergenic soap. I get a lot of soap from here

Another important tip is to always moisturize after bath or shower. Using Johnsons baby lotion should be mild enough. Over dry skin, especially sensitive skin, can cause break outs. (My son and I both have super sensitive skin!)

You can also check with your pediatricians office, the nurse may have some other suggestions. Although it doesn't sound like it's much too worry about.

Good luck!

Your best bet is to place him on a daily multivitamin containing Vit B and folic acid. Also some pro-biotics. Ensure that he is having daily Vitamin C too. If he is not eating it in the form of fruit (the best way), get a Vitamin C supplement as well, but ensure that it is coated as it can be harsh on the tummy.
Make sure his face is wiped down throughout the day to keep it clean and change his pillow case every night. Wash his hair frequently too.
If these measures don't help, then see a dermatologist because you wouldn't want his face scarring at a later stage if this just progresses downhill.
