my 2 year old daughter constantly has dry, chapped and flaky lips. I tried using Chapstick on her but it seems to make it worse. Any advise on what else I can use?

What can I do next?

If you have vitamin E in the house, clip the end of the capsule and smooth it right on her lips. It doesn't lick off, it smooths in and heals FAST -and- it's a very inexpensive fix. 1 capsule should give you about 4 applications. I'd say 'good luck', but, you won't need it -- it'll work! :)

I have had trouble with chapped and flaking lips, especially right after my daughter was born, and I used Lansinoh, the lanolin you put on your sore nipples when nursing. It works like a charm and I'm still not through the tube I got 2 years ago when my daughter was born.

My children (son especially) has this problem occasionally. I discovered it happens when he licks his lips too much. It's a bad cycle because he'll lick his lips, causing them to dry out and hurt, then he'll lick them more to make them feel better, so they don't heal very well. I found the flavored chapstick is no good because he licks it to taste it, and then dry lips cycle continues.

Now I use either a bit of vaseline, or a nice creamy balm (mine's called "Labello")--something with no taste at all. Also, I give him a talk about not licking his lips so they will heal--it makes him more aware of what he's doing. If I can keep up the lipbalm, and stop him from licking, for a few days, the problem clears up. Hope you find something that works for you.

Your chapstick may be adding to the problem. I used to have that same problem until I switched products. For years now I have used both Lansinoh, like someone else mentioned and I also now use chapsticks that I get at the health food sotre that don't contain any petroleum ingredients. It made all the difference. I am chapped lip free!

My son had the same problem. We found something called Boudreaux's Baby Kisses at Target. It's very thick. We put it on before he went to bed and then during the day if necessary and we haven't had any problems since.

Two things...

First make sure she drinks enough water. A lot of chapped lips come from dehydration.

Second something I have been doing for a while is using the purified lanolin for breastfeeding. Sounds crazy but it works. I use it at night and have not had any more chapped lips. It also soothes noses that have been blown too much. It is safe if they get it in their mouths. It might be worth a try. I even have my husband using it.
