So my son has a stomach bug. The doctor sent us home with a script for Promethazine..to help settle his tummy. Has anyone used this with kids...he is six. There is a dosage on the script..I am just a bit hesitant to give it to him. I take it every once and awhile, myself, I have anxiety induce nauseousness. I take half a dose at a time and that is almost the dose they want me to give him. That seems like alot to me.
I googled drug facts and got a whole lot at once and am very overwhelmed. Do you have any suggestions on drug fact websites?
Duh...I dont know why I had not even thought about that:)
.
I would try calling a pharmacist... I believe Walgreens has some available 24 hours to speak with.
Less than half your dose doesn't sound like that much. Plus, they probably don't have you on a high dose anyway if you're taking it for anxiety, but if you're still worried then what I would do is call the pharmacy and ask to speak to the pharmacist. Tell him/her that you just want to make sure the dosing on the Rx is correct and have him go over it with you. There are usually very basic ratios like 1mg/kg and things like that so they should be able to double check it and explain it to you rather quickly and easily.
My kids had never gotten that, for a stomach bug.
There are many other things/remedies to use.
Including not using anything, and letting the virus bug, go its course.
Give him a bland diet.
Hydrate him so he doesn't get dehydrated. Even with clear broth soups, etc.
Is he vomiting and has diarrhea?
If your son has respiratory issues, you should not use this drug.
I would, get a Pharmacist's opinion, too.
And also ask him/her, what you can use for a stomach bug/vomiting/diarrhea.
You got excellent suggestions! Definitely call a pharmacist. I hope your lil' guy feels better soon!
We keep that in the house - our Dr. will give me a script for 5 at a time to have on hand. I have never had any problems with it for my son - he is now 15, but has taken it as young as 6 or 7.
It may make your son sleepy - it does for me and my son. But we have never had any other side affects.
It will make him feel better.
I am just wondering why they gave him promethazine instead of zofran?! Next time this happens I would ask the doc/pediatrician about zofran. So many LESS side effects and a safer, yet just as effective drug. The major difference is that promethazine will make your little one VERY tired. Just a suggestion! Good luck. :)
