I want to drop cable and just get some basic channels. Since everything has gone digital I am not sure what I need to do to access the free channels. Do I need an antenna on the roof, and or on the tv and do I need a digital converter. Will I still be using a coaxil cable?? So confused. Can you also recommend what equipement to purchase that you have had a good experience with. As of now one of our televisions has the new TIVO box which has a place to plug in an antenna in the back and I believe it does the whole digital thing.

We dropped cable 1 1/2 yrs ago. We got an antennae from ebay or amazon, for about $60. It's in our attic. We have about 100 channels, some are religious and spanish, but we get a decent amount that we like. I don't know about a coaxle cable and I think if you have a newer tv, you wont need a digital converter. We have an excellent HD picture & I don't see us ever going back to cable, especially since there is so much smut for kids to watch.

If you have hi-def (most if not all flat screens are) then you're okay. If you still have a tube TV, then you need to purchase a box or something from your local electronics store. But I could be wrong - I'd contact the electronics store and find out from them. They'll point you in the right direction.

my flat screen gets 3 channels, two home shopping channel and one foreign language channel. We have hooked up the digital converter in one room and it works just fine and we haven't moved our antenna, its still in our attic. Talk to a sales person at your local electronic store or the electronic department at whatever store you frequent if they have one. They will be able to tell you everything you need to do and maybe even in laymans terms.

We've been cable free for almost 4 years. If you have an older TV, you need a converter box and an antenna. If you have a newer tv that has HD, then you just need an antenna. You don't need a roof antenna, just an hd bunnyear antenna. They also have antennas that are like a slim square box that hang on the wall. You can get that stuff at any electronic store, Walmart, etc. I'm not sure how the TIVO box comes into play, I think you have to have cable for that? Not sure.
